It is long and loose, often with an opening down the center front. The Abaya is worn as an outer covering and may have borders and embroidery or bright colors in some styles. The Ottoman Turks spread these wide baggy trousers, along with the Fez, throughout Europe, India, and the Middle East. It is worn as a prayer cap in many countries. The Taqiyah ranges in styles from the stiffer caps pictured above to a soft crocheted cap. The rope around the head is called the Agal. The Fez is most popularly made of a stiff felt. Sultan Mahmud II of the Ottoman Empire introduced the modern form of the Fez in 1826.
