ISLAND PROGRAMME SUMMARY

SUMMARY 29 September 2017 was the last day for the NRC Chios office. NRC’s Chios operations ceased CHIOS on 31 July in line with the transition to the Greek government assuming full management of provision of services on the islands. NRC has assisted displaced people on the Greek island of Chios since 2015, supporting 35,000 refugees and migrants in its first three months. NRC worked with the Greek authorities, humanitarian agencies and volunteers in open reception and identification facilities (Vial) and informal settlements (), providing shelter, food, education, camp management and WASH services. Most beneficiaries were from but also included people from Afghanistan to Yemen. NRC opened Agora, a community centre that provided information and resources to aid groups, refugees and migrants supplied about 3,000 hot meals every day to refugees in Souda as well as supplementary food portions in Vial. With Swiss NGO Be Aware and Share, NRC reached more than 300 children and youth with non-formal education. NRC’s withdrawal from Chios was due to the ending of European funding via ECHO’s humanitarian financing instrument on the islands and did not represent a reduction CHIOS

of the levels of need amongst the refugee population. NRC continues to monitor the humanitarian situation on the islands where some 20,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in the first nine months of 2017.
