  • Developing a Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Island Regions
Developing a Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Island Regions. The case of South Aegean Region in Greece. Apostolos P. Siskos1, Dimitrios Voloudakis1, Dimitrios Lalas1, Nikolaos Gakis1, Grigorios Andronikos2, Dionysios Gkoutis1, Maria Strataki1 1Envirometrics Technical Consultants and Engineers Ltd, 20 Karea str. Athens, 11636, Greece 2South Aegean Region's Managing Authority, 22 Saki Karagiorga str., Ermoupolis, Syros, 841 00, Greece Keywords: Climate change, adaptation, region, island, South Aegean Presenting author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The overall purpose of the Regional Adaptation Plan to Climate Change (RAPCC) of the South Aegean Region (SAR) is to contribute to enhancing the region's resilience to climate change in all sectoral policies as outlined in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. This means increasing preparedness and capacity to address the impacts of climate change at local and regional level, developing a coherent approach and improving coordination. The methodology used to assess the climatic vulnerability of the individual sectors and geographical areas of the SAR and ultimately the climate risk assessment comprised nine solid steps beginning from defining “reference" changes of climatic variables to assess the vulnerability of the different activities and ending with ranking sectors and activities as to the magnitude of the risk. The analysis of the climatic vulnerability and danger and hence risk of the different sectors and activities of the South Aegean Region was carried out for the short and medium term (2021-2050) and long-term horizons (2071-2100) and distinct for the geographical units of Cyclades and Dodecanese. According to these findings the proposed measures in the RAPCC were based on island specific characteristics such as financial-social activities, geomorphology and developed both in horizontal and sectoral actions and classified into High, Medium and Low priority.

  • Poison King: the Life and Legend of Mithradates the Great, Rome's
Copyrighted Material Kill em All, and Let the Gods Sort em Out IN SPRING of 88 BC, in dozens of cities across Anatolia (Asia Minor, modern Turkey), sworn enemies of Rome joined a secret plot. On an appointed day in one month’s time, they vowed to kill every Roman man, woman, and child in their territories. e conspiracy was masterminded by King Mithradates the Great, who communicated secretly with numerous local leaders in Rome’s new Province of Asia. (“Asia” at this time referred to lands from the eastern Aegean to India; Rome’s Province of Asia encompassed western Turkey.) How Mithradates kept the plot secret remains one of the great intelli- gence mysteries of antiquity. e conspirators promised to round up and slay all the Romans and Italians living in their towns, including women and children and slaves of Italian descent. ey agreed to confiscate the Romans’ property and throw the bodies out to the dogs and crows. Any- one who tried to warn or protect Romans or bury their bodies was to be harshly punished. Slaves who spoke languages other than Latin would be spared, and those who joined in the killing of their masters would be rewarded. People who murdered Roman moneylenders would have their debts canceled. Bounties were offered to informers and killers of Romans in hiding.1 e deadly plot worked perfectly. According to several ancient histo- rians, at least 80,000—perhaps as many as 150,000—Roman and Italian residents of Anatolia and Aegean islands were massacred on that day. e figures are shocking—perhaps exaggerated—but not unrealistic.

  • A Comparison Between Organic and Conventional Olive Farming in Messenia, Greece
horticulturae Article A Comparison between Organic and Conventional Olive Farming in Messenia, Greece Håkan Berg 1,*, Giorgos Maneas 1,2 and Amanda Salguero Engström 1 1 Department of Physical Geography, Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm, Sweden; [email protected] (G.M.); [email protected] (A.S.E.) 2 Navarino Environmental Observatory, Navarino dunes, Costa Navarino, 24 001 Messinia, Greece * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +46-702559069 Received: 15 May 2018; Accepted: 4 July 2018; Published: 9 July 2018 Abstract: Olive farming is one of the most important occupations in Messenia, Greece. The region is considered the largest olive producer in the country and it is recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Kalamata olive oil, which is considered extra fine. In response to the declining trend of organic olive farming in Greece, this study assesses to what extent organic olive farming in Messenia provides a financially and environmentally competitive alternative to conventional olive farming. In this study, 39 olive farmers (23 conventional and 16 organic) participated in interviews based on questionnaires. The results showed that organic olive farming is significantly more profitable than conventional farming, primarily because of a higher price for organic olive oil. Despite this, the majority of the conventional farmers perceived a low profit from organic farming as the main constraint to organic olive farming. All farmers agreed that organic olive farming contributed to a better environment, health and quality of olive oil. Organic farmers used fewer synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and applied more environmentally-friendly ground vegetation management techniques than conventional farmers.

Abstract: Historic school buildings were built during the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century, using the traditional and locally available building materials and techniques, and most of them still function as schools. Because of the requirements arising from their constant use, there is an intense interest in their structural and energy integration, while there is limited research on the tangible and intangible values they encompass. In this study, an effort has been made to assess the historical, architectural, constructional and structural aspects of a historic school building located in the town of Arnaia, in the mountainous part of Chalkidiki peninsula, Northern Greece. The study included on-site inspection, architectural overview, determination and mapping of the constructional materials and techniques applied, as well as investigation of the preservation state of the building. Additionally, a structural analysis of the system was performed through a three-dimensional finite element model. All research data was comparatively evaluated, in order to identify the principles governing its physiognomy and structure.

  • European Court of Human Rights Examines Living Conditions in Hotspots Moria, Pyli & Vial
This project has been supported by the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM), a collaborative initiative of the Network of European Foundations (NEF). The sole responsibility for the project lies with the organiser(s) and the content may not necessarily reflect the positions of EPIM, NEF or EPIM’s Partner Foundations. For immediate release EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS EXAMINES LIVING CONDITIONS IN HOTSPOTS MORIA, PYLI & VIAL Chios, Kos & Lesvos, January 20, 2021 While the situation on the East Aegean islands received particular attention after the outbreak of the fire in Moria, it has subsided more recently. At the same time, living conditions on the islands continue to be catastrophic. People have little access to medical care, wash facilities, and proper shelter, and are regularly forced to sleep in tents that flood easily in the winter rains. Particularly vulnerable people are not exempt from these conditions. Even in times when the Covid-19 was and is on the verge of an outbreak in the camps, members of at-risk groups continue to live exposed to these conditions without protection. The European Court of Human Rights has now asked the Greek government questions regarding the treatment of a total of eight people, all of whom were living in one of the so-called EU hotspots and had pre-existing medical conditions or were particularly vulnerable. In total, the Court connected 8 cases involving Chios, Kos, Lesvos and Samos, i.e. 4 out of 5 EU hotspots. These cases therefore demonstrate the structural illegality and impossibility to implement the hotspot approach and border procedures in a way that does not violate human rights.

However, a key part of the National Energy and Climate Plan is to gradually phase out the use of lignite, which includes the decommissioning of all existing lignite units by 2023, except the Ptolemaida V unit, which will be closed by 2028. This plan makes Greece a frontrunner among countries who intensively use lignite in energy production. In this context, this paper investigates the environmental, economic, and social state of Megalopolis and the related perspectives with regard to the energy transition, through the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the municipality of Megalopolis and the regional unit of Arcadia.
