“City Cellar was a wonderful restaurant to have dinner. The waiters were so kind and patient, it started the evening off perfectly,” said Tharmella Nyahoza, who has since graduated from G-Star School of the Arts and attended Aquila Theatre’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “Speaking with the guest artist, Matt Stabile from Florida Atlantic University’s Theatre Lab, getting advice about certain aspects of theater and hearing about his directing style was amazing. His friendly personality wanting to include everyone, and how he went out of his way to really talk to us and make us feel comfortable, inspired me. Spending time with other students from different schools, and even from my own, really made my heart full. Being around others that love theater as much as I do was incredible.” Jermesha Jackson, Amara Dowdell and Artaysha Hicks

To conclude the magical afternoon, each student was invited to participate in Theatre Lab’s Future PAGES (Playwrights, Artists & Generations of Exciting Storytellers) Project, which provides students grades 3-12 the opportunity to share their voices and stories with the world. Should their original story be selected, one or more De George students will get the chance to perform on the Theatre Lab stage. The De George Academy is generously funded by the Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust. This spring, the De George Residency will mark its eighth year welcoming fifth- through eighth-grade students in a two-week artist residency program. Students will create an original production, to be performed in Persson Hall, under the guidance of teaching artists. Summer Launch Dance Students, Teaching Artists and Volunteers 561.651.4320 or visit kravis.org and click on Giving & Support. s The Kravis Center’s De George Academy for Performing Arts, now in the eighth of its planned twelve-year mission, supports Palm Beach County’s economically-disadvantaged third- through eighth-grade students’ efforts to attend Bak Middle School of the Arts, Dreyfoos School of the Arts or a performing arts college, or to embark on a career in the performing arts. Approximately 80 students representing 16 Title I schools participated this summer in the De George Summer Launch, a weeklong workshop for current and incoming elementary youth, providing a sampling of performing arts experiences in theater, music, and ballet and modern dance with the opportunity to focus on specific interests. The third– through fifth-grade students studied with professional arts educators as well as high school-level De George Academy students who shared their own experiences and mentored the younger students. During the 2019-2020 school year, more than 130 students – three times that of the program’s first year – are expected to participate in the Academy’s afterschool and weekend workshops. These workshops prepare Academy students for auditions for performing arts schools. The acceptance rate for De George Academy students at arts magnet schools is 50 percent, compared to only 25 percent for students not enrolled in the program. Students are nominated by arts teachers in their Title I home schools to participate in the De George Academy. In September, De George Academy students experienced a performance of the play When She Had Wings at Florida Atlantic University’s Theatre Lab. Vocal and theater students were able to see their De George instructor, Matt Stabile, in Summer Launch Dance Students

Polina Osetinskaya, RUSSIAN STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA already the audience response to the opening concerts is heartwarming. In a memorable performance, pianist Olga Kern with National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine presented a tremendous Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 (Nov. 19). Actually, this could be called a “season of piano power” with a remarkable line- up of soloists which also included David Fray with the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra (Jan. 14), Khatia Buniatishvili with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Jan. 19), and continues with Polina Osetinskaya with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra (Feb. 17), and Emanuel Ax with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (March 17). We even had Beethoven’s birthday season covered, introduced beautifully by the duo of violinist Midori and another exceptional pianist, Jean-Yves Thibaudet (Jan. 5). Upcoming, in a category of its own, is the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble, the Emanuel Ax, ROTTERDAM PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA now-20-year-old orchestra, based in Seville, Spain, consisting of musicians from countries in the Middle East, of young Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, and Spanish artists. Make an ENDLESS IMPACT with Your ENDOWMENT GIFT Imagine making a lasting impact on your community for generations to come with your gift.

A gift that brings enriching, awe-inspiring and joy-filled experiences to people of all ages and ensures these unforgettable moments will continue into the future.

When you give a legacy gift to the Kravis Center’s Endowment Fund, you’ll be among an esteemed group of discerning donors who wish to help us continue our mission of enhancing the quality of life in Palm Beach County. Your support today secures our future tomorrow—and will ensure that the Kravis Center retains its reputation as South Florida’s premier center for the performing arts and the community’s top cultural attraction.

The Kravis Center recognizes your generosity as a member of the Helen K. Persson Society (or respects your wishes to remain anonymous).

For information about the Helen K. Persson Society, please contact Margaret May Damen, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, CAP® Endowment and Planned Giving Officer at 561.651.4230 or [email protected] or visit kravis.org/endowment.

WHY I GIVE ... “I urge everyone who enjoys the Kravis Center to consider the part we can each perform in preserving it and keeping it open, lively, and healthy. Since 1992 we have reveled in the variety and quality of every type of musical entertainment at our Kravis Center. It is a treasure in my life, and it enriches me time and again, making life in the Palm Beaches special.

The Kravis Center has depended on the generosity of the extraordinary few, of the significantly successful among us who have achieved much in life and who have generously chosen to give back and to fund the Kravis Center with very substantial contributions. I myself cannot do what others in our community can with their very large contributions. But I do benefit, and I do want the Kravis Center to continue. That is why I have John Mike chosen to include the Kravis Center in my will, modest though it may be. It is a big building, quite complex (take a tour), and involved in our Palm Beach County community with our schools, with seniors, with multiple arts organizations, and with hosting events which do not make money. In fact, actual ticket revenue and other earned income accounts for only 80% of the annual costs of operating our Kravis Center. The Kravis Center actually needs the support of us all for it to carry forward.

My heirs are not desperate. They are not relying on the little bit I will leave behind to survive. So I want to gift those arts organizations and charities which actually make a difference. At the time of my death I want to reward, and I want to help. Just think what good could be done if every one of us seniors (I am over 65) would include the Kravis Center in our wills? Gifts of $5,000 or $10,000 or $20,000, multiplied many times over, will preserve what we all love.

Please join me, and consider putting the Kravis Center amongst the beneficiaries in your estate. And be proud of what we can all accomplish together.” - John Mike {20} OVATIONS WINTER 2020

Noted philanthropists in the Palm Beach community explored the topic of “The Business of Giving: Next Generation Philanthropy” when the Kravis Center held its first Corporate Partners Business Speakers Series event of the season. The luncheon took place in the Center’s Gimelstob Jeff Stoops, Judy Mitchell, Alex Dreyfoos, Ballroom in the Cohen Pavilion. John Kessler Jane Mitchell The Kravis Center’s Immediate Past Board Chair, Michael Bracci served as moderator for a distinguished panel of Kravis Center board members which included Penny Bank, Education Committee Chair; Mark Levy, Corporate Partners Executive Committee Chair; and William Meyer, past Board Chair and current Operations Committee Chair. Nearly 100 community leaders attended the luncheon discussion as a benefit of their Kravis Center Corporate Partners membership. Ms. Bank said her giving is typically done with her heart and as a former teacher, her focus is often on education-related initiatives. Mr. Levy recalled his parents were mentors in that they may not have always been affluent, but were always charitable. Mr. Meyer told the crowd about his family meetings growing up where the whole family was involved in making decisions about philanthropy and spoke of balancing his heart and his checkbook.
