Oftentimes, they perform with the core intention of helping others. But, did you know that volunteering can benefit your own health as well? Researchers have attempted to measure the benefits that volunteers receive including positive feeling referred to as helper’s high, increased trust in others and increased social interaction. From lowering stress to boosting self-confidence, research has shown that volunteering offers many health benefits, especially for older adults, such as: 1. Volunteering decreases the risk of depression 2. Volunteering gives a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills Community 3. Volunteering helps people stay physically and mentally active 4. Volunteering may reduce stress levels Pasta/Bingo Night 5. Volunteering may help you live longer Friday, June 21 6. Volunteering helps you meet others and develop new relationships 5:00-9:00pm RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) recruits and refers adults to make a Adult Community difference in their communities through volunteering. Their mission is to connect Center people to volunteer positions with local non-profits that align with their interests, skills and experiences. Membership is free and they will provide their members with Meet The Mayor supplemental accident, liability and auto insurance while they are performing their Monday, June 24 volunteer duties. They also hold an annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon to show 10:00-11:00am their appreciation for their members commitment to service. Being a RSVP member is Adult Community a good way to track all service hours conveying to the community the true value of being a volunteer. Center If you are currently volunteering here at the Adult Community Center or in other areas you should consider becoming an RSVP member. It’s simple...stop by the ACC Front Desk and pick up a RSVP packet. If you are not yet volunteering and would like to do so here at the Adult Community Center stop by and pick up a volunteer form. We are always looking to add to our team in the areas of dining room servers, bingo callers, front desk receptionists, grant writing and the list goes on. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.
