CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now. -

SALAMI CIARAN LAVERY Anderson Yes thank you, thank you both of you, I’m not sure which is worse, baffling, shocking or pleasant. But hello and welcome anyway to the first Loose Ends of 2017, as we go forward into the New Year in a spirit of hope and optimism. Things can only get better – or to put it another way - things can scarcely get any worse. Though with Donald Trump just about to become leader of the free world, Boris Johnson already in post as Britain’s top diplomat and Jeremy Corbyn continuing to be leader of the opposition, who can be sure? But we crack on here with a studio-full of top line guests, even more smartly dressed than shoppers in a Tesco superstore, including the comedian and actor Hugh Dennis, star of Radio 4’s the Now Show, BBC 2’s Mock the Week and these days virtually every comedy drama broadcast on the TV, here to tell us about the programmes and the Lord of Misrule, which you’ve just been hearing from, which have taken charge of Radio 4 today. And the award winning comedian and Lady of Misrule, Bridget Christie, here because you demanded it, or at any rate to tell us about her stand up show called Because You Demanded It, which was one of the benefits of Brexit unpredicted by the so called experts. -
Actor Russell Tovey Gets Personal About His Art Collection
Embuscado, Rain. Actor Russell Tovey Gets Personal About His Art Collection. Artnet news. October 11, 2016. Actor Russell Tovey Gets Personal About His Art Collection He’s his artists’ biggest champion. By Rain Embuscado Celebrity Collectors is a series that explores the fascinating and mysterious world of high-profile art collections. Fans may recognize Russell Tovey as the beleaguered werewolf in BBC’s Being Human, Patrick’s love interest in HBO’s Looking, or, more recently, as the enigmatic new character on ABC’s runaway hit Quantico. But what may be lesser-known about the actor is his off-screen relationship with contemporary art—a serious passion he regularly touts on Instagram. I last saw Tovey on the fair circuit during this year’s Armory Show, where he was standing in front of an enormous contour drawing by legendary Young British Artist Tracey Emin at Carolina Nitsch‘s booth. These days, Tovey told me, he’s been on the gallery crawl in New York whenever he has a spare moment, making the occasional studio visit along the way. In a recent phone conversation, we talked about the artists he’s been interested in, the importance of collecting, and how he got into art. “As a kid I always connected to pop art through cartoons and comic books like Tintin and Marvel, and then discovering Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol,” he said. “I loved advertising art and people like Mel Ramos using that in his work, but I never realized that you could actually buy into art and live with it.” Tell us how you got into art. -

A Film by Joanna Hogg
presents EXHIBITION A FILM BY JOANNA HOGG UK / COLOUR / 104 MINUTES / 2013 A Kino Lorber Release from Kino Lorber, Inc. 333 West 39 St., Suite 503 New York, NY 10018 (212) 629-6880 Publicity Contacts: Rodrigo Brandão – [email protected] Matt Barry – [email protected] SHORT SYNOPSIS When D and H decide to sell the home they have loved and lived in for two decades, they begin a process of saying goodbye to their shared history under the same roof. The upheaval causes anxieties to surface, and wife and performance artist D, struggles to control the personal and creative aspects of her life with H. Dreams, memories, fears, have all imprinted themselves on their home, which exists as a container for their lives and has played such an important role in their relationship. LONG SYNOPSIS Artists D (Viv Albertine) and H (Liam Gillick) are a married couple who have lived together in a West London house for nearly 20 years. It is a modernist house - all verticals, reflecting windows and sliding partitions – and seemingly the ideal residence for two artists who each work independently at home in their separate spaces, occasionally communicating briefly by intercom. Throughout EXHIBITION we see D and H living together, working separately, communicating or failing to communicate – in a series of moments depicting a long-term relationship that sometimes seems to be in meltdown, at other times extremely strong. It’s autumn. H suggests to D that she’s unwilling to discuss her work with him; she says she’s reluctant to expose herself to his criticism. -

Traditionally, the purposefulness and relevance of a singer-songwriter were defined by something unique in their lyrical acumen, vocal skills and/or guitar or piano accompaniment. In the 1990s this paradigm was tested by the trend towards larger orchestrastion and towards electronic orchestration. In the 2000s it became harder and harder to give purpose and meaning to a body of work mostly relying on the message. Many singer-songwriters of the 2000s belonged to "Generation X" but sang and wrote for members of "Generation Y". Since "Generation Y" was inherently different from all the generations that had preceeded it, it was no surprise that the audience for these singer-songwriters declined. Since the members of "Generation X" were generally desperate to talk about themselves, it was not surprising that the number of such singer- songwriters increased. The net result was an odd disconnect between the musician and her or his target audience. The singer-songwriters of the 2000s generally sounded more "adult" because... they were. -
