CYNDI LAUPER

For the past 30 years, Cyndi Lauper has been dazzling – and surprising – her fans all over the world. A multi-talented artist and one of music’s most beloved icons, she has racked up global record sales of over 50 million (and 14 Grammy nominations) and has won countless awards, from a Grammy and an Emmy to numerous honors for her tireless activism. This year brings another series of spectacular firsts for Cyndi, as well as a celebration of her three decades “It’s not about in the music industry. To her lengthy list of accomplishments, she can now add Broadway composer, Tony Award winner, what people star of her own TV show, and author. In the summer of 2013, Cyndi embarked on think of me, the She's So Unusual Tour to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of her iconic debut album of the same name which spawned four Top-5 hits on the but what I Billboard 100 (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop and All Through the Night). learned along She will play the album in its entirety as part of the show each night to honor and thank her legion of fans that have stood by her the way. ” since the beginning. –Cyndi Lauper Cyndi, who won great acclaim with her 2006 stage debut as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera, has written the music and lyrics for the much-anticipated Broadway adaptation of the British film . The show won 6 including Best Musical, Best Leading Man and Best Score. Cyndi became the first solo woman ever to win the Tony for Best Score. The new musical, which opened on The Great White Way in April brings together a powerhouse team: Cyndi, legendary producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, four-time Tony® Award-winner (who wrote the book) and venerable director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. “Kinky Boots is the kind of joyous, inspirational musical that we love and are excited to share with audiences,” say Roth and Luftig. Inspired by a true story, it’s the tale of one Charlie Price, who is forced to step in and save his family’s shoe factory in Northern England following the sudden death of his father. Help arrives from the unlikeliest angel – a charismatic drag performer named Lola. Together, this improbable duo revitalize the ailing business and help one another grow into the men their fathers dreamed they would become. In the process – and buoyed by Cyndi’s unforgettable score of instant classics, from lively comic tunes to bring-down-the-house stunners – they transform an entire community through the power of acceptance. It’s a message that could not be more timely.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////page 19 Of course, Cyndi has always been an advocate for people who are different (among whom she proudly counts herself.) She details this journey in her recent New York Times Best Selling autobiography, Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir. Written with journalist Jancee Dunn and published by Atria Books, the memoir details for the first time Cyndi’s tumultuous years growing up in Queens, the ups and downs of a career that has spanned over three decades, her conflicted feelings on fame and her advocacy of equality for all that led to the creation of her foundation, the True Colors Fund. Cyndi writes with moving detail about how she left her chaotic home life at 17 with no prospects and no money. While taking jobs at the racetrack, as an IHOP waitress and gal Friday, music was her refuge. She moved from band to band, playing small gigs, and finally landed a solo deal. In 1983 she broke out with the album “She’s So Unusual” which earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist and made her the first female artist in history to have four top 5 singles on a debut album. “Most of us think of Cyndi as the free-spirited girl who just wants to have fun and her many die-hard fans will be surprised to know her real life story,” says Judith Curr, Executive Vice President and Publisher, Atria Books. “Sometimes I come off good, sometimes not “And if telling so good,” says Lauper. “But I never wanted this book to be anything but my truth. It’s not about what people think of me, but what I the story of learned along the way. And if telling the story of what I went through can help someone else, then what I went it’s worth it.” For her television adventure, she joined with one of TV’s most influential producers, Mark Burnett, whom through can she met after her 2010 turn on Celebrity Apprentice. Fans of the FOX hit Bones will also be glad to know that Cyndi also continues her recurring role as the bewitching psychic Avalon Harmonia. Helping others has always been a guiding force for Cyndi. An unwavering advocate for equality long before she became famous, she co-founded the True Colors Fund in 2008 to further her commitment. The organization works to inspire everyone to get involved in advancing equality for all through its Give a Damn Campaign and to bring an end to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness through its newly launched Forty to None Project. Cyndi’s particular commitment to helping these vulnerable youth is driven by the fact that they are on the street primarily due to family rejection based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. “As a mother, I can’t ever imagine throwing my child away. I can’t imagine kicking a kid out of my house. I can’t imagine rejecting a person who is, literally, a part of me,” says Lauper. In addition, Cyndi is the Honorary Chairperson and a co-founder of the True Colors Residence, the first project of its kind to provide a permanent, supportive and secure home to formerly homeless LGBT youth in . Looking to the near future, Cyndi will once again turn back to her first love - music. For now, she’s mum on the details of her next album and tour, but one thing is for sure: it’s yet another invigorating challenge for this ever-changing artist—a woman who is never afraid to push herself creatively, and take her many fans along for the ride. Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots was the big winner at the 2013 Tony Awards, landing the top prizes for Best Musical and Best Score, in addition to wins for choreography, orchestrations, sound, and lead actor Billy Porter. Lauper was invited to join the show’s creative team by Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book for the musical, adapted from the 2005 film of the same name which was inspired by a true story. Already a Grammy and Emmy Award-winner, she is the first woman to land a solo Tony Award for Best Score. “We were especially excited about Kinky Boots’ honors as we watched the Tony Awards because TPAC invested in this show as a member of the Independent Presenters Network,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The IPN plays a producing role for a number of musicals, to help develop shows that will hopefully be successful on Broadway and then tour to venues like TPAC across the country. We are so proud to be a producing partner of Kinky Boots – we are seeing a return on our investment – and we’re absolutely delighted to host Cyndi Lauper at TPAC to showcase her talent and to call attention to her work for Broadway.” The story centers around Charlie, who is trying to save the family shoe factory. He finds unexpected inspiration in his childhood friend, who has grown up to become Lola, an entertainer in need of some sturdy dance boots. The unlikely pair turns the factory around by diversifying into a niche market of thigh-highs for drag queens. Along the way, they discover that they have more in common than they ever imagined and that by “changing your mind you can change the world.” “I had the best time when I saw Kinky Boots on Broadway. It’s fresh, fun and exciting – one of the most joyful and inspiring musicals I’ve ever experienced,” said O’Brien. “Cyndi Lauper’s score is fabulous, from some very funny tunes to those big song and dance show-stoppers. I loved the diversity of her work in this show. You’d think she’d been writing for Broadway for years,” said O’Brien. “Most of all, I love how her songs express the emotion and uplift the story of how entire communities are changed through Charlie and Lola’s dreams and can-do attitudes. She created numbers that captured the spirit of the characters – brilliant. I know that our audiences will love this show, too, when Kinky Boots eventually tours to TPAC,” she said.

November 12-17, 2013 Tunes include “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are The Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young),” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and the title song. Created by celebrated British comedian and writer Ben Elton, the show claims acting great Robert DeNiro as a producer. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor are its musical supervisors, playing an ongoing role in casting for each new production. We Will Rock You has played London’s Dominion Theatre (now in a record-breaking eleventh year) and circled the globe, winning major entertainment awards worldwide. At the 2011 Olivier Awards, (the UK’s Tonys), it won the top honor in the people’s choice category. The rock theatrical takes place in the future when Earth is controlled by a mighty corporation. Musical instruments are banned. Only mindless, computer-generated tunes are legal. Individuality is taboo. However, a resistance movement is growing beneath the planet. The fight to bring the power of rock music back to the people is about to begin! “What distinguishes We Will Rock You is that it’s about rock music. There’s a lot of soul, and it’s what makes the show… with scorching live guitars all round,” wrote the Financial Times among other great reviews. “The sheer power of the best Queen numbers strikes hard.”

Step back in time to the Desilu Playhouse in 1952 and take your seat in the studio audience for two episodes of I Love Lucy. January 14-26, 2014 A charming host warms up the crowd, pointing out the latest high-fidelity technology before the filming begins. Between scenes, the Crystaltone Singers perform live advertising jingles in perfect ’50s-style harmony. The new hit musical is an authentic recreation of the most enduring comedy in television history. I Love Lucy has been on the airwaves around the world since it premiered in 1951, including 40 million households a year in the United States. In addition to the crazy antics in the Ricardo’s New York apartment, featuring Lucy, Ricky, and their friends Fred and Ethel Mertz, you’ll love the sounds of the Latin Orchestra on stage at the famed Tropicana Nightclub. In the first episode, “The Benefit,” Ethel wants Ricky to perform at her women’s club benefit. Of course, Lucy refuses to ask him for the favor unless she, too, performs. Next, in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined,” Ricky’s big shot director friend comes to town. Ethel, Fred, and Lucy, who can barely see after an eye exam, give an uninvited audition. “I frankly cannot remember any performance in any venue in recent time that caused me to laugh so long and so hard… When it ended I was filled with warmth and joy,” said William Keck, TV Guide.
