One outlet which constantly both reflects and enables patriarchy is our media; the movie industry in particular plays a critical role in constructing gender roles and reflecting our cultural attitudes toward patriarchy. • (Don't) Wear Glasses: the Performativity of Smart Girls On
GIRLS WHO (DON'T) WEAR GLASSES: THE PERFORMATIVITY OF SMART GIRLS ON TEEN TELEVISION Sandra B. Conaway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Kristine Blair, Advisor Julie Edmister Graduate Faculty Representative Erin Labbie Katherine Bradshaw © 2007 Sandra Conaway All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair, Advisor This dissertation takes a feminist view of t television programs featuring smart girls, and considers the “wave” of feminism popular at the time of each program. Judith Butler’s concept from Gender Trouble of “gender as a performance,” which says that normative behavior for a given gender is reinforced by culture, helps to explain how girls learn to behave according to our culture’s rules for appropriate girlhood. Television reinforces for intellectual girls that they must perform their gender appropriately, or suffer the consequences of being invisible and unpopular, and that they will win rewards for performing in more traditionally feminine ways. 1990-2006 featured a large number of hour-long television dramas and dramedies starring teenage characters, and aimed at a young audience, including Beverly Hills, 90210, My So-Called Life, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freaks and Geeks, and Gilmore Girls. In most teen shows there is a designated smart girl who is not afraid to demonstrate her interest in math or science, or writing or reading. In lieu of ethnic or racial minority characters, she is often the “other” of the group because of her less conventionally attractive appearance, her interest in school, her strong sense of right and wrong, and her lack of experience with boys.

Abstract Agents of Change: Enlightened, HBO and the Crisis of Brand Identity in the Post- Network Era Collins David Swords, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2014 Supervisor: Caroline Frick As a result of changing cultural, economic and technological factors, television always exists in a perpetual state of transformation. The fragmentation of the mass audience and the disintegration of the network oligarchy catalyzed the emergence of a multi-channel universe and niche cable markets in the post-network era. HBO, perhaps the most successful premium cable channel to emerge during the changing TV landscape, implemented a subscription-service economic model, enabling it to produce uncensored, commercial free content unavailable on broadcast television. HBO has since been labeled as the leading purveyors of quality, auteurist-centered TV. For this report, I analyze how HBO has been constructed in the realm of academic discourse.

  • Comedy's Dynamic Duo, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg
The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 108: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Hello ladies and germs. This is Tim Ferriss and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss show, where each episode it is my job to deconstruct world class performers, to tease out the habits, routines, morning rituals, favorite books, etc., that have made them spectacularly good at what they do. And there are patterns that you notice across disciplines. That is why I interview people from a very broad spectrum of areas, like the military, entertainment, chess, sports, comedy, etc. So it ranges from Arnold Schwarzenegger to General Stanley McChrystal and now, in this episode, we have a dynamic duo. We have Seth Rogen, @sethrogen, R-O-G-E-N, who is an actor, writer, producer and director and his partner in crime, Evan Goldberg, @evandgolberg on the Twitters, who is a Canadian director, screenwriter and producer. Together, they get into a whole lot of mischief and create some amazing comedy. I had a chance to spend some time with both these great gents, as well as their team, which was spectacular. And I won’t mention the location in case we’re keeping that quiet, but here’s some background. They’ve collaborated on films such as Superbad, which they actually first conceived of as teenagers, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, The Green Hornet, and Funny People. They’ve also written for David: Ali G Show and The Simpsons. In 2013, Evan and Seth released their directorial debut, This is the End, which is actually a combination of two different ideas, and we get into that in the conversation.

  • “The Melissa Mccarthy Effect”: Feminism, Body
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School “THE MELISSA MCCARTHY EFFECT”: FEMINISM, BODY REPRESENTATION AND WOMEN-CENTERED COMEDIES A Dissertation in Mass Communications by Catherine Bednarz © 2020 Catherine Bednarz Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2020 ii The dissertation of Catherine Bednarz was reviewed and approved by the following: Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Chair of Graduate Programs Dissertation Adviser Co-Chair of Committee Michelle Rodino-Colocino Associate Professor of Communications Co-Chair of Committee Kevin Hagopian Teaching Professor of Communications Lee Ahern Associate Professor of Communications iii Abstract Immediately following its release in 2011, Bridesmaids was met with enormous critical praise as a woman-centered and feminist comedy. This praise was due to the largely female cast of characters in a major film comedy, a rarity in Hollywood. Women face sexism at every level of Hollywood, especially in comedy, so the success of a woman-led movie within the comedy genre was significant. Reviewers described the triumph of Bridesmaids as a game changer, claiming it would open the door to other woman-fronted comedies. This potential was labeled the “Bridesmaids Effect” (Friendly, 2011) by reviewers. However, while some comediennes may have benefitted from the success, I argue that the influence may be more accurately described as a “Melissa McCarthy” effect. This is particularly significant because though there have been several notable and successful female comedians before Melissa McCarthy, very few would be considered fat and feminist. The presence of fat women is not accurately reflected in mass media (Henerson, 2001).

  • Clear Horizons Student News
CLEAR HORIZONS STUDENT NEWS VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 FEBRUARY 2016 NEWs Ghostbust3rs Juliette Patterson Draft scripts for Ghostbusters III have been around since the 1990s, with Dan Aykroyd leading the movement. After multiple difficulties, including the death of Harold Ra- mis, Ivan Reitman, director of the original Ghostbusters and sequel Ghostbusters II, finally stepped away from the pro- ject. However, this hiccup didn’t stop Aykroyd from continuing to work on ideas for the third installment. Though this never worked out, a new spin on the old movie is coming soon. Director Paul Feig (Spy, Bridesmaids, Freaks and Geeks) has taken on the task of creating a new addition to the Ghostbusters franchise. Written by Feig and Katie Dippold (Parks and Recreation, The Heat), the script for this “hard reboot” entails new adventures pioneered by new charac- ters. Reitman plans to produce this movie, but it will feature all new cast members. The four main characters in Ghostbusters (2016) are Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Melissa McCarthy. The film will also feature supporting actors Matt Walsh and Chris Hemsworth, as well as cameos by two of the original Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. Filming took place in Boston in the summer of 2015. Promotion for this movie hasn’t been large up to this point, but a line of character posters released in December features black and white backgrounds with neon hues. Additionally, Feig has kept fans up to date with occasional sneak previews of props through his Twit- ter account. Entertainment Weekly recently published a still of the four actors standing in front of green smoke.

  • Freaks. Geeks
PROPOSAL When you're trying to sell a series, you have to do a lot of persuading. And one of the things you have to persuade is the network. And there's a lot of people in the network who have to consider a lot of potential series. And so you're always looking for neat, concise ways to make their jobs easier and to make your show sound like a series that their network can't possibly live without. And that's what this proposal is all about. I got a call one day from the network asking me for a two or three page document that could get the executives and stockholders excited about our show. Did it work? Well, we were on the air for 18 episodes, so I must have done something right! But then we got canceled. Well, don't blame it on my poor little proposal, you big meanie! Sorry. Enjoy! "FREAKS AND GEEKS" A One Hour Series Freaks. Geeks. Jocks. Preppies. Farmers. Motorheads. Brains. Every school has them. Everybody has been one of them. So ... which group did you belong to? "Freaks & Geeks" is a new one hour comedy/drama series that follows the very realistic, very funny and often very touching lives of Lindsay and Sam Weir -- a sister and brother who are trying, like all teenagers in this world, to get through high school and into adulthood as happily as possible. It's a series for kids that tells them that all the seemingly insurmountable moments they're going through day to day are just the way it's always been when you stick a group of teenagers together in a large cinderblock building and hope they'll socialize.
