Position: Washington D.C. Is the capital city of the USA and it's legislative, administrative and judicial centre of the States. Washington D.C. Is named after the first president . It is the first city in the world especially planned and built as a capital. The letters D.C. Mean District of Columbia. The capital is not a part of any of the 50 states and there are not so typical for America. The city lies on the on the eastern coast of the USA and has 4 sections – north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west. The streets starting from the Capitol and the streets which run from north to south have numbers and streets from east to west are marked with letters A, B, C, etc.

Foundation: The DC was established in 1790 by the . The city was designed by the French architect and engineer Pierre L’Enfant who was helped by Thomas Jefferson, later the third president. The exact location was chosen by President George Washington. And the city was formed from land donated by the states of Maryland and Virginia. The federal district was named Columbia, which was a poetic name for the United States commonly in use at that time. And Congress held its first session in Washington in November 1800.

History: In 1910 the Heigh Building Act was signed. It said that no building could exceed 15 stories. In 1960s and 1970s a protection of historical building began, because it was better repairing old buildings than demolishing them.

Population: It covers an area of 180 squares kilometres and has a population of 700 000 people in the centre, but the metropolitan area has around 3,7 million people. 70% are black and 30% are white.

The : The White House is the seat of the American presidency and the official residence of every American president expect of George Washington. It was built between 1792 and 1801. On the first floor there is a corridor lined up with portraits of American presidents and first ladies. It is furnished with historical furniture. And there are 132 rooms and 20 bathrooms. Largest room is East Room, which is decorated in white and gold and it is used for balls and receptions. The most beautiful room is Blue room, where the president receive guests. The second floor is opened for public.

The Capitol: The Capitol is situated on the . It was completed in 1827 and it has two separate chambers – the Houses of Representative in south wing and Senate in north wing. On the top of the building is the bronze and every four years the President comes here for his Inauguration.

The Washington : The Washington Monument was built to honour the country's first president George Washington. This 170 metres tall is the world's tallest stone structure. It is surrounded by fifty flags, with an inside. The top offers a panoramic view of the city and it is visible from almost all over the city.

The Monument: The Lincoln Monument was built in the style of Greek temple. It has 36 columns symbolized 36 states, which existed when Lincoln died. It was built in 1914 and it is made of white . And there is also the marble statue of Abraham Lincoln sitting in a . Pentagon: Pentagon is a department of Defence and it is the largest office building in the world. It's situated in Arlington. And we called it because of its shape.

The Jefferson Monument: The Jefferson Monument was built in 1943 in a style of Greek temple. There is a standing statue of Thomas Jefferson, which is 6 metres high and is made of bronze. It commemorates 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson birth.

Museums: Washington is world famous for its museums. There is National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of African Art, the and many others.

The Mall and other parks: The Mall is a long park area that starts at the Capitol and stretches for 2 miles to the west, ending at the Washington Monument. There are also parks and green spaces. The most beautiful parks are the West and East Parks and the
