Obama Review of Armenian Studies 11 No. 33, 2016 Ömer Engin Lütem 1 - TURKEY-ARMENIA RELATIONS During the first six months of 2016, there was no positive development in Turkey-Armenia relations; on the contrary, the tense atmosphere caused by the “centennial” commemorations, although decreasingly, continued. The genocide allegations, which constitutes the main problem between the two countries, receded into the background due to the clashes in Karabakh. However, this is not what Armenians want. Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian stated that “centennial” commemorations will continue and that their aim was recognition, condemnation, and prevention of new genocides.1 Thus, it is understood that, in 2016 (and probably in the coming years), the goal is continue to put pressure on Turkey through the genocide issue.
