Lovecraft until he was born on August 20, 1890. I have to confess that we weren’t able to converse much before his birth, and since he had gone back to oblivion before I began my vacation from it, I’ve had to learn everything I can about him secondhand or through his writings. I think everyone who is a Lovecraft fan should go back and read his work with a fresh eye, forgetting about what other writers have “added” or “fleshed out” over the years. I did precisely that as I was writing this book, and for me it was easy to take Lovecraft on his own terms because to date I haven’t read most of the work by those who came after him. Most people reading this know that Lovecraft’s creations have been the subject of role-playing games for many years. However, although we have seen a few creatures presented here or there for fantasy RPGs, no one has attempted to systematically comb Lovecraft’s work to create a Lovecraftian sourcebook that is not as influenced by outside writings. What you have before you is the result of months of research, both in reading Lovecraft’s fiction and in reading about his life and background, so that I can present something that is as close to his cosmic point of view as is feasible in a supplement for a role-playing game. I present this material for Labyrinth Lord, with material usable in classic race-as-class format as well as advanced classes and races, like those in the Advanced Edition Companion. The material in this book is usable with other Advanced and Basic Edition games. When I talk about going back to Lovecraft’s original fiction, I don’t mean to say that I haven’t made my own interpretations, because I have. I’ve even extrapolated to create new material that fits with Lovecraft’s literary themes, and included material inspired by two selected writers (R. E. Howard and C. A. Smith) who were Lovecraft’s contemporaries, peers, and partners in what Lovecraft termed “Yog-Sothothery.” This approach is necessary to create something that is fun and playable; this book should be used as a tool to create your own Lovecraftian dark fantasy worlds. Thoroughly explore the horrors Lovecraft suggests, and do so expeditiously. One never knows when that crawling chaos will reclaim us into oblivion. Abstract: Lovecraft’s cosmic horror led him to create aliens that did not exist on the same moral spectrum as humanity. That is one of many ways Lovecraft’s work insists humans do not matter in the cosmos. However, most of the work on Lovecraft has focused on the space aliens, and how they are necessarily alien to humans, because they are from other worlds. Lovecraft’s terrestrial aliens, such as the Deep Ones, the Old Ones, and the Shoggoths, are less alien, but just as morally strange. Lovecraft used biological horror to create his terrestrial aliens, and in turn used them to claim that morality was a product of human evolution and history. A life form with a separate evolutionarily history would necessarily have a separate and incomprehensible morality. Lovecraft illustrates that point with narrators who are ultimately sympathetic with the aliens, despite the threat they pose to the narrators and to everything they have ever known. ISBN-13: 978-1443866798. A collection of academic articles is like a collection of short stories: the differences between articles (or stories) are more interesting than the thematic similarities. The free play of imagination is breaking even the genre rules, and that is exactly what makes the stories (or articles on genre texts) so interesting. This Polish-British collection Basic Categories of Fantastic Literature Revisited (2014) is aiming to rethink the concept of the fantastic as it is defined in the theory of Tzvetan Todorov. As stated in Todorov's Introduction à la littérature fantastique (1970), there are three modes of fiction outside the great barrier of mainstream literature: the marvellous (with recognizable supernatural elements), the uncanny (with explanations about exceptional things), and the fantastic (with ambivalent signs of the non-natural). Todorov's definition of the fantastic is usually considered to be more anachronistic than the texts that it is used for, but there still remains the mystery of readers’ pleasure in the kind of "Todorovian hesitation". And it is here where this Polish-British collection of twelve researchers steps in. According to the publisher's info-blurb, the articles are "unified by a highly theoretical focus." But is there anything "highly theoretical" in Todorov's legacy? It may be a valuable goal to rethink the usability of Todorov's view of the fantastic, but the articles in this collection consist of quite usual academic matter with emphasis on case studies.

    Monstrous and Haunted Media: H. P. Lovecraft and Early Twentieth-Century Communications Technology James Kneale his paper examines the role of media technologies in the horror fic- tion of the American author H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). Historical geographies of media must cover more than questions of the distri- Tbution and diffusion of media objects, or histories of media representations of space and place. Media forms are both durable and portable, extending and mediating social relations in time and space, and as such they allow us to explore histories of time-space experience. After exploring recent work on the closely intertwined histories of science and the occult in late nine- teenth-century America and Europe, the discussion moves on to consider the particular case of those contemporaneous media technologies which became “haunted” almost as soon as they were invented. In many ways these hauntings echo earlier responses to the printed word, something which has been overlooked by historians of recent media. Developing these ideas I then suggest that media can be monstrous because monstrosity is centrally bound up with representation. Horrific and fantastic fictions lend themselves to explorations of these ideas because their narratives revolve around attempts to witness impossible things and to prove their existence, tasks which involve not only the human senses but those technologies de- signed to extend and improve them: the media. The remainder of the paper is comprised of close readings of several of Lovecraft’s stories which sug- gest that mediation allowed Lovecraft to reveal monstrosity but also to hold it at a distance, to hide and to distort it.

Add its humble beginnings, casual style and non-corporate affiliation, and its recent turn to self- sustainability, and the Society becomes even more interesting. J.R.R. Tolkien’s notion of linguistic style pro- vides a useful concept to examine how these names play upon a distance from and proximity to English, so as to give rise to specific historical and cultural connotations. Some imitate the sounds and forms of foreign nomen- clatures that hold “weird” connotations due to being linked in the popular imagination with kabbalism and decadent antiquity. Others introduce sounds-patterns that lie outside English phonetics or run contrary to the phonotactics of the language to result in anti-aesthetic constructions that are awkward to pronounce.
