As a young writer looks into the history of the abandoned church — and the cult that once resided there — he stirs an ancient horror. Will he be able to finally solve an unspeakable mystery, or has he merely paved the way to become its next victim? This episode is an adaptation of HPL's last story. It is the favorite tale of many Lovecraft fans, and its themes of immigration and xenophobia, religious freedom and newspaper sensationalism seem shockingly relevant today. You'll get: a clipping from the Providence Telegram about riots outside the Starry Wisdom church on Federal Hill a letter The Haunter of the Dark: Collected Short Stories the Vatican to a concerned priest of Providence a page of notes deciphering a cryptic passage from an unholy book of the Church of Starry Wisdom, including an illustration of the Shining Trapezohedron a letter by Robert Blake praising a certain Providence author of weird fiction for pre-order customers only: the press identification card of Edwin M. Check out the details in The Haunter of the Dark: Collected Short Stories fascinating report. The Starry Wisdom church was inspired by a real church in Providence: St. John's Catholic Church on Federal Hill. It was torn down many years ago, but HPLHS member Will Hart took several great photos of The Haunter of the Dark: Collected Short Stories while it stood, which we used in making the prop newspaper clipping for this episode. You can see more of his photos at Will's website! Tironian shorthand, or Tironian notes, was a way of writing Latin invented by Cicero's personal secretary, Marcus Tiro. It was expanded during the Middle Ages to a system of about 13, individual signs, some of which survived into the present day in the form of ampersands and other assorted glyphs. For more about this fascinating system of writing, check out this book, published, coincidentally, in Bile Beans, the sponsor of this episode, was an actual product with an actual jingle known as The Bile Bean Marchcomposed by F. OUT OF THE SHADOWS: A STRUCTURALIST APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING THE FICTION OF H.P. LOVECRAFT BY JAMES A. ANDERSON A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENGLISH UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 1992 Abstract Although Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is generally regarded as one of the world's finest writers of horror and science fiction, his work has received little critical attention by mainstream critics. This study takes Lovecraft out of the shadows of literature by shedding light upon his work through a structural analysis of fifteen of his stories. This analysis shows that Lovecraft's fiction, while it may appear fantastic, expresses early twentieth century naturalism in a cosmic context. Part One subjects four of Lovecraft's best known stories to a detailed structural analysis using the theories of Roland Barthes and Gerard Genette to isolate Lovecraft's major themes and narrative techniques.

The vast, sweeping vistas of the Scottish heaths form a faint patina of mildly amusing poetic imagery varnishing vague, groping lurches of romantic languishment. But there is something distinctly unsettling in leafing through these competent irrelevancies, and as one reads the poems there develops an unmistakable sense of the work’s central imagery. And regardless of the order in which the poems are read, this imagery becomes inexorably clearer: Of the night sky being a completely malleable entity. That the stars we see each night are radically “repainted across that tapestry” although we believe them constant. That the only constancy is the searing, sucking, and all-consuming depth of midnight black which seeks to swallow those “dancing motes” in their “chaos waltz”. THE FOSSIL Official Publication of The Fossils, Inc., Historians of Amateur Journalism Volume 105, Number 4, Whole Number 341, Glenview, Illinois, July 2009 A FITTING AWARD TO JAKE WARNER President's Report Guy Miller When I first revealed to a small select group that Chairman Lee Hawes had agreed that Jacob L. Warner should be selected for the 2008 Russell L. Paxton Memorial Award for Service to Amateur Journalism, the collective response seemed of one breath: “Well, it's about time!” Indeed. Jake and his son David came to ajay in 1969, thanks to a two-page NAPA-authored promo insert which appeared with the April mailing of The Printer's Helper, a publication of the Kelsey Company. Before that brochure, Jake tells us, the two had no idea that the hobby of amateur journalism existed. Jake's children had received a small press and a short font of type as a present, and Jake and David took an instant interest in learning how to use it. Soon they were finding self- help books on the subject, including Ben Lieberman's Printing as a Hobby. In the meantime, they had graduated to larger presses and more type. But they were running out of things to print. So, the news of an outlet for their new-found hobby was well-timed. Thus The Boxwooder No. 1 for July 1969 not only introduced the ajay world to father and son and this remarkable journal, but also to what would become a dedicated ajay clan. For, soon Jake and Dave were joined by Leah with her Rosewood Rambler.
