À minha outra família, Volnei e Clarice, sogros que me adotaram e sempre me apoiam. #uerjresiste RESUMO GARCIA, Yuri. Cinema. Literatura. ABSTRACT GARCIA, Yuri. Strange aeons in Dark Rooms: The Mythology of Lovecraft in Contemporary Culture and its Cinematographic Appropriations. Tese (Doutorado em Comunicação Social) – Programa de Pós-graduação em Comunicação da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (PPGCom/Uerj), Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2019. This work seeks to map H. P. Lovecraft 's creations in contemporary culture, giving a bigger emphasis to his cinematographic appropriations. For this, it is necessary a greater understanding of the writer's work and of the philosophical concept of the Cosmic Pessimism that pervades all his stories. In this way, a brief biography and a search to understand some basic elements of his stories is necessary to be able to perceive in a more detailed form his strong presence in several other mediums nowadays. Some essential inspirations for the development of the author's short stories become relevant to this research and thus gain a space for better development, such as Edgar Allan Poe and the film Berkeley Square (1933). Then, we start with an analysis of some remarkable elements of Lovecraftian mythology in our culture in both more academic and more popular spheres. In this way, arriving at cinema, we propose an investigation of Cosmic Pessimism in some films, while mapping various works

1 Originally published in/as: Xavier Aldana Reyes, ‘The Cultural Capital of the Gothic Horror Adaptation: The Case of Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula 3D’, Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies, 5.2 (2017), 229–44. DOI link: 10.1386/jicms.5.2.229_1 Title: ‘The Cultural Capital of the Gothic Horror Adaptation: The Case of Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula 3D’ Author: Xavier Aldana Reyes Affiliation: Manchester Metropolitan University Abstract: Dario Argento is the best-known living Italian horror director, but despite this his career is perceived to be at an all-time low. I propose that the nadir of Argento’s filmography coincides, in part, with his embrace of the gothic adaptation and that at least two of his late films, The Phantom of the Opera (1998) and Dracula 3D (2012), are born out of the tensions between his desire to achieve auteur status by choosing respectable and literary sources as his primary material and the bloody and excessive nature of the product that he has come to be known for. My contention is that to understand the role that these films play within the director’s oeuvre, as well as their negative reception among critics, it is crucial to consider how they negotiate the dichotomy between the positive critical discourse currently surrounding gothic cinema and the negative one applied to visceral horror. Keywords: Dario Argento, Gothic, adaptation, horror, cultural capital, auteurism, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera Dario Argento is, arguably, the best-known living Italian horror director.

Various authors and subgenres are mentioned throughout via text boxes containing annotative notes. These annotations are intended to enhance reader understanding of the American Gothic genre by familiarizing them with the stylistic conventions common to key authors and famous works of the genre. The story itself is broken up into seven sections, each distinct with regard to style and content while maintaining a cohesive narrative with a unified plot. As the readers progress through the plot, they will also progress chronologically through the history of American Gothic. from the earliest work of Charles Brockden Brown up to the Postmodern style of Mark Danielewski. iv Dedicated to My Wife v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would first like to thank my advisor, Dr. Bardine, for his openness to this unconventional project, as well as for the opportunity to discuss metal and attend shows with his students.

  • The Weird and Monstrous Names of HP Lovecraft Christopher L Robinson HEC-Paris, France
names, Vol. 58 No. 3, September, 2010, 127–38 Teratonymy: The Weird and Monstrous Names of HP Lovecraft Christopher L Robinson HEC-Paris, France Lovecraft’s teratonyms are monstrous inventions that estrange the sound patterns of English and obscure the kinds of meaning traditionally associ- ated with literary onomastics. J.R.R. Tolkien’s notion of linguistic style pro- vides a useful concept to examine how these names play upon a distance from and proximity to English, so as to give rise to specific historical and cultural connotations. Some imitate the sounds and forms of foreign nomen- clatures that hold “weird” connotations due to being linked in the popular imagination with kabbalism and decadent antiquity. Others introduce sounds-patterns that lie outside English phonetics or run contrary to the phonotactics of the language to result in anti-aesthetic constructions that are awkward to pronounce. In terms of sense, teratonyms invite comparison with the “esoteric” words discussed by Jean-Jacques Lecercle, as they dimi- nish or obscure semantic content, while augmenting affective values and heightening the reader’s awareness of the bodily production of speech. keywords literary onomastics, linguistic invention, HP Lovecraft, twentieth- century literature, American literature, weird fiction, horror fiction, teratology Text Cult author H.P. Lovecraft is best known as the creator of an original mythology often referred to as the “Cthulhu Mythos.” Named after his most popular creature, this mythos is elaborated throughout Lovecraft’s poetry and fiction with the help of three “devices.” The first is an outlandish array of monsters of extraterrestrial origin, such as Cthulhu itself, described as “vaguely anthropoid [in] outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind” (1963: 134).

  • At the Mountains of Madness Lovecraft, Howard Phillips
At the Mountains of Madness Lovecraft, Howard Phillips Published: 1931 Categorie(s): Fiction, Horror Source: Wikisource 1 About Lovecraft: Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is notable for blending elements of science fiction and horror; and for popularizing "cosmic horror": the notion that some concepts, entities or experiences are barely comprehensible to human minds, and those who delve into such risk their sanity. Lovecraft has be- come a cult figure in the horror genre and is noted as creator of the "Cthulhu Mythos," a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a "pantheon" of nonhuman creatures, as well as the famed Necronomicon, a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works typically had a tone of "cosmic pessimism," regarding mankind as insignificant and powerless in the universe. Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, and his works, particularly early in his career, have been criticized as occasionally ponderous, and for their uneven quality. Nevertheless, Lovecraft’s reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though of- ten indirect. Hugvísindasvið “I am an other and I always was…” On the Weird and Eerie in Contemporary and Digital Cultures Ritgerð til MA-prófs í menningafræði Bob Cluness May 2019 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindad Menningarfræði “I am an other and I always was…” On the Weird and Eerie in Contemporary and Digital Cultures Ritgerð til MA-prófs í menningafræði Bob Cluness Kt.: 150676-2829 Tutor: Björn Þór Vilhjálmsson May 2019 Abstract Society today is undergoing a series of processes and changes that can be only be described as weird. From the apocalyptic resonance of climate change and the drive to implement increasing powerful technologies into everyday life, to the hyperreality of a political and media landscape beset by chaos, there is the uneasy feeling that society, culture, and even consensual reality is beginning to experience signs of disintegration. What was considered the insanity of the margins is now experienced in the mainstream, and there is a growing feeling of wrongness, that the previous presumptions of the self, other, reality and knowledge are becoming untenable. This thesis undertakes a detailed examination of the weird and eerie as both an aesthetic register and as a critical tool in analysing the relationship between individuals and an impersonal modern society, where agency and intention is not solely the preserve of the human and there is a feeling not so much of being to act, and being acted upon. Using the definitions and characteristics of the weird and eerie provided by Mark Fisher’s critical text, The Weird and the Eerie, I set the weird and eerie in a historical context specifically regarding both the gothic, weird fiction and with the uncanny, I then analyse the presence of the weird and the eerie present in two cultural phenomena, the online phenomenon of the Slender Man, and J.G.
