Cultural Identity Construction in Russian-Jewish Post-Immigration Literature Cultural Identity Construction in Russian-Jewish Post-Immigration Literature by Regan Cathryn Treewater A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Comparative Literature University of Alberta © Regan Cathryn Treewater, 2017 ii Abstract The following dissertation examines narratives of immigration to Western Europe, Israel and North America authored by Russian-speaking writers of Jewish decent, born in the Soviet Union after World War II. The project seeks to investigate representations of resettlement experiences and cultural identity construction in the literature of the post- 1970s Russian-Jewish diaspora. The seven authors whose selected works comprise the corpus of analysis write in Russian, German and English, reflecting the complex performative nature of their own multilayered identities. The authors included are Dina Rubina, Liudmila Ulitskaia, Wladimir Kaminer, Lara Vapnyar, Gary Shteyngart, Irina Reyn, and David Bezmozgis. The corpus is a selection of fictional and semi- autobiographical narratives that focus on cultural displacement and the subsequent renegotiation of ‘self’ following immigration. In the 1970s and final years of Communist rule, over one million Soviet citizens of Jewish heritage immigrated to Western Europe, Israel and North America. Inhospitable government policies towards Soviet citizens identified as Jewish and social traditions of anti-Semitism precipitated this mass exodus. After escaping prejudice within the Soviet system, these Jewish immigrants were marginalized in their adopted homelands as Russians. The following study of displacement and relocation draws on Homi Bhabha’s theories of othering and unhomeliness. The analyzed works demonstrate both culturally based othering and unhomely experiences pre- and post-immigration resulting from relegation to the periphery of society. Based upon the concept of performativity developed by Judith Butler, this study maintains that the cultural display of self is a performative act which manifests in a variety of ways. iii Chapter One presents the research problem, introduces the corpus of analysis, discusses the concepts of unhomeliness, identity and performativity as theoretical tools, provides a justification of the methodological framework being utilized, and finally positions Russian-Jewish post-immigration literature within the canon of diasporic world literature. Chapter Two focuses on a contextualization of Russian-Jewish character portrayal from a historical perspective, charting the metamorphosis of the Wandering Jew, as first conceived of by Christian society, through this enduring figure’s transformation beyond stereotyped caricature. This study postulates that contemporary Russian-Jewish authors have reclaimed the literary image of the Wandering Jew as their own, effectively reconfiguring the character for their post-immigration narratives of displacement. As this project shows, the multilayering of cultural influences often results in ambiguous conceptualizations of self, a common feature of the literary make-up of Russian-Jewish post-immigration protagonists. Such ambiguity is often accompanied by a desire for self-definition and is frequently associated with the geroi khudozhnik (artist figure), who symbolically embodies post-immigration identity renegotiation. The artist appears regularly in these works as the perpetual creator and designer, who is equally engaged in the ongoing reformulation and shaping of his/her own post-immigration identity. Chapter Three focuses on the literary construction of post-immigration spaces and how they both inform and reflect cultural distinctiveness. Through examinations of unhomeliness, nostalgia, and the search for belonging, the project approaches representations of both physical and symbolic spaces as culturally significant. Chapter Four deals with the construct of performativity as it applies to displays of cultural identity. The chapter explores the culturally performative actions of post-immigration iv protagonists through the consideration of established character types, language usage, and the physical presentation of self in connection with multilayered identity. By identifying significant themes common to the project’s literary corpus the symbolic implications of everyday choices made by the analyzed characters exemplify the importance of understanding Russian-Jewish post-immigration experiences. The present comparative literary investigation of seven authors from this group demonstrates how the presence of multiple simultaneous cultural influences -- Soviet, Russian, Jewish, German, Israeli, American, Canadian – results in highly specific and complex presentations of ongoing identity negotiation. v Dedication For Benji May your culturally multilayered journey bring you adventure, inspiration and wisdom without borders. “Understand a man by his deeds and words; the impressions of others lead to false judgement.” -- Talmud “Keep your language. These stories depict two unique celebrations of Christmas in Aivali, Asia Minor. As the Christmas season draws near, many of us will be attending Orthodox churches and experiencing the spiritual power of Greek icons. Kondoglou was the foremost iconographer in Greece in the 20th century. He wrote extensively on the sacred art of iconography, in fact he is considered the man responsible for the revival of Byzantine iconography in the 1930’s. Kontoglou was born in 1895 in Aivali, Asia Minor. Together with his paintings and his writings, he published more than 3000 studies and articles, fighting for the eternal values of the Or- thodoxy and the Greek Tradition. Although known primarily as an iconist and philosopher, Kontoglou was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. He was awarded the Cross-of-the- Commander of the Phoenix and received the Distinction of Letters and Arts from the Academy of Athens in recognition of all his exceptional work. We are also continuing our theme of Christmas past with a touching story, from the perspective of a Greek soldier, during the Albanian campaign of 1940-1941. Included in this insert is a lighthearted piece by Paul Papadeas about celebrating Christmas Greek style in North Carolina during the 1980’s.     Pearl couscous with roasted pumpkin and chorizo (serves 4) Ingredients: 500g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut in to 1cm cubes 2 large zucchini 225 g pearl couscous 1 chorizo, thinly sliced (125g) ½ cup chopped fresh coriander ¼ cup lemon juice 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 tablespoon olive oil Modifications 1 punnet cherry tomatoes (prick these with a knife and add them to the tray) 1 medium eggplant, cubed to 1cm pieces and added to tray for baking Method: Preheat oven to 200C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Spread the pumpkin, zucchini, tomatoes and eggplant on the tray. Spray with oil and season with pepper Cook couscous in saucepan of boiling water for 10mins or until tender. Drain. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat and stir chorizo for 3-5mins or until golden. Combine couscous, baked vegetables, chorizo and coriander in a large bowl. Whisk the lemon juice, oil and paprika in a jug and add to the bowl and stir. Sprinkle with some baby spinach. About this recipe: - Pearl (also known as Israeli) couscous is a handy grain to try – couscous is a medium GI grain, pearl couscous is a low GI grain - Adding more vegetables adds fibre and flavour to the dish as well as adding more volume to the meal without increasing the energy to kilojoules greatly. Nutrition (per serve after modification) Energy: 1957kJ (468 calories), 59g carbohydrates, 7.3g fibre, 16g protein, 16g fat, 3g saturated fat, 342mg sodium. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

Marquis de Custrine, Lettres de Russie 1 Because of the volume and quality of Russian fiction in the nineteenth century, it’s been widely held that the great Russian prose of that century has auto- matically, by pure inertia, wandered into our own. From time to time, in the course of our century, here and there one could hear voices nominating this or that writer for the status of the Great Russian Writer, purveyor of the tradi- tion. These voices were coming from the critical establishment and from Soviet officialdom, as well as from the intelligentsia itself, with a frequency of roughly two great writers per decade. During the postwar years alone – which have lasted, blissfully, so far – a minimum of half a dozen names have filled the air. The forties ended with Mikhail Zoshchenko and the fifties started with the rediscovery of Babel. Then came the thaw, and the crown was temporarily bestowed upon Vladimir Dud- intsev for his Not by Bread Alone. The sixties were almost equally shared by Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago and by Mikhail Bulgakov’s revival. The bet- ter part of the seventies obviously belong to Solzhenitsyn; at present what is in vogue is so-called peasant prose, and the name most frequently uttered is that of Valentin Rasputin. Officialdom, though, it should be noted in all fairness, happens to be far less mercurial in its preferences: for nearly fifty hears now it has stuck to its guns, pushing Mikhail Sholokhov.
