ABSTRACT The aims of this thesis are two-fold: to uncover the history of the middle-class single women in the feminist movement from the mid-nineteenth century up to the early twentieth century; and to analyse representations of single women in novels of the same period. The history of the middle-class women's movement in the nineteenth centuiy is to a large extent the history of the single woman. I have consulted major archives of feminist material and identified key discourses relating to female singleness. My sources include private papers, published tracts, biographies and feminist analyses of leading feminist figures, unpublished articles and sketches for articles. I have also consulted a number of periodicals paying particular attention to those directed at a female audience. The key issues and concepts which emerged have enabled the charting of changing ideologies of femininity. I try to show how women derived their identities from the cultural discourses available to them but also how they interrogated the discourses in the process of self-definition. I discuss how issues of female self-construction are fictionalised. These concerns crossed into fiction and were expressed through modes of female heroic action, the making of the heroine, plot lines and narrative devices and strategies. Some writers re-formulated existing literary models in an attempt to re-present the single woman in the novel. Plot structures and narrative forms were, to some extent, necessarily reinvented by the demands of such representation. Fiction engaged with cultural debates and female singleness was increasingly recognised as a forced or voluntary exclusion from the history of marriage. Consequently singleness challenged narratives of matrimony and heterosexual union. The thesis also examines the rationale for the relationship between contexts and narratives and concludes that narratives are embedded within contexts that inevitably affected them, however indirectly. The thesis, then, is structured around the main phases of feminist activity within the period. The analysis begins with the 'superfluous woman' debate of the mid-nineteenth century and the fictive versions and social options which are available for spinsters at this time. It then moves on to the 'militant celibacy' of the suffragettes and shows how this interacts with the figure of the 'New Woman' of the fln-de-siècle . This section of the thesis also includes a discussion of areas of cultural controversy such as sexual anarchy, marriage and the politicisation of spinsterhood through communities of women. Neither the idea of'militant celibacy' nor the politicisation of the middle-class spinster have hitherto been fully examined in accounts of the British women's movement. The final section of the thesis analyses the impact of the discourses generated by the new 'science' of sexology on modem and post-World War I writing. It traces the formation of 'lesbian' identity and settles the point at which the political emphasis of celibacy begins to decline. Some further discussion follows of the relationship between mothers and their spinster daughters in fiction and finally the thesis moves on to a discussion of the sororal bond in the early fiction of Barbara Pym. My thesis covers a range of writers including Charlotte Bronte, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Gaskell, Margaret Oliphant, James, Gissing, Clemence Dane, Radclyffe Hall, May Sinclair and Barbara Pym. I examine representation in both fiction and political and social debate. I pay attention to the perspectives provided by the testimonies of real middle-class single women, to discover how they understood their non-marital status. Hence much of my primary research is based on the letters, private papers, and archives of nineteenth-century women's organisations. The thesis traces the responses of middle-class single women to singleness. It begins at the point when single women ceased to be relatively

    The Women’s Suffrage Movement Today, all citizens, living in Northern Ireland, over the age of eighteen share a fundamental human right: the right to vote and to have a voice in the democratic process. One hundred years ago, women in Great Britain and Ireland were not allowed to vote. The Suffrage Movement fought for the right for women to vote and to run for office. This Movement united women from all social, economic, political and religious backgrounds who shared the same goal. The Representation of the People Act in 1832 was led through Parliament by Lord Grey. This legislation, known as the Great Reform Act excluded women from voting because it used the word ‘male’ instead of ‘people’. The first leaflet promoting the Suffrage Movement was published in 1847 and Suffrage societies began to emerge across the country. In 1867, Isabella Tod, who lived in Belfast established the Ladies’ Institute to promote women’s education. She travelled throughout Ireland addressing meetings about Women’s Suffrage. Frustrated by their social and economic situation, Lydia Becker led the formation of the Manchester National Society for Women’s Suffrage (NSWS) in 1867. In 1868, Richard Pankhurst, an MP and lawyer from Manchester, made a new attempt to win voting rights for women. While he was unsuccessful, his wife and daughter, Emmeline and Christabel, go on to become two of the most important figures in the movement. In 1897 the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was established and Millicent Garrett Fawcett was elected as its President. Between 1866 and1902 peaceful activities by NUWSS and others societies led to numerous petitions, bills and resolutions going before the House of Commons.

It is frequently repeated in the relevant scholarship that Western literary and artistic modernism started in little magazines.1 The useful online Modernist Journals Project (Brown University / Tulsa University), dealing so far only with American and British magazines, uses as its epigraph the much quoted phrase: “modernism began in the magazines”, see SCHOLES and WULFMAN (2010) and BROOKER and THACKER (2009-2013). With two issues published in 1915 and a third one stopped that same year in the galley proofs for lack of funding, the Portuguese little magazine Orpheu inaugurated modernism in Portugal pretty much at the same time as all the other major little magazines in Europe and the United States. This is interesting, given the proverbial belatedness of Portuguese accomplishments, and no less interesting the fact that, like everywhere else, Orpheu was followed, in Portugal as well, By a number of other little magazines.

They can be considered to both represent and construct gender codes, offering readers constantly evolving communal identities. This dissertation asserts that the periodical genre is a valuable resource in the investigation of communal identity formation and seeks to reclaim for historians of British modernist feminism a neglected publication format of the early twentieth century. I explore the discursive space of three unique women’s periodicals, Bean na hÉireann, the Freewoman, and Indian Ladies Magazine, and argue that these publications exemplify the importance of the early twentieth-century British woman’s magazine-format periodical as a primary vehicle for the communication of feminist opinions. In order to interrogate how the dynamic nature of each periodical is reflected and reinforced in each issue, I rely upon a tradition of critical discourse analysis that evaluates the meaning created within and between printed columns, news articles, serial fiction, poetry, and short sketches within each publication. These items are found to be both representative of a similar value of open and frank discourse on all matters of gender subordination at that time and yet unique to each community of readers, contributors and editors.

She is a revolutionary feminist and has been active for several years in the Women’s Liberation Movement campaigns against male violence. She is presently a member of Women Against Violence Against Women. Synopsis--The history of sex in the last 100 years has generally been represented as a triumphant march from Victorian prudery into the light ofsexual freedom. From a feminist perspective the picture is different. During the last wave of feminism women, often represented as prudes and puritans by historians, waged a massive campaign to transform male sexual behaviour in the interests of women. They campaigned against the abuse of women in prostitution, the sexual abuse of children, and marital rape. This article describes the women’s activities in the social purity movement, and the increasingly militant stance taken by some pre-war feminists who refused to relate sexually to men, in the context of the developing feminist analysis of sexuality. The main purpose of the paper is to show that in order to understand the significance of this aspect of the women’s movement we must look at the area ofsexuality not merely as a sphere of personal fulfilment but as an arena of struggle in which male dominance and women’s subordination can be most powerfully reinforced and maintained or fundamentally challenged.

    Draft CHAPTER 5 Parks and Open Spaces Before it became intensively developed for housing, the parish of Battersea was mostly open agricultural land governed by differing types of tenure (Ill. 5.1). Perhaps a third of it was in some form of common tenure. It was from these areas that the larger public open spaces described in this chapter— Battersea Park, Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common—have come down in the guise familiar today. The two commons, as their names imply, occupied common land, governed by laws defining the rights of the lords of the manor and copyholders or commoners. Mainly they provided rough grazing and were exploited for brushwood and gravel. In addition there was the large expanse known as Battersea Common Field or Fields, located on more fertile ground closer to the river and subject to flooding. This was not full common land in the same sense as the two commons. It was owned freehold by the lord of the manor, leased or tenanted largely in strips, and intensively cultivated for arable farming or market gardening. ‘Lammas rights’ of turning out livestock over the fields for certain weeks of the year were held by local parishioners, while entertainment venues had become an established feature of its riverside sector by 1800. It was here that Battersea Park was created. The perceived public interest in both types of tenure led eventually to the emergence of Battersea’s three great open spaces. But they evolved in different ways. Battersea Park came into being by a series of accidents.     THE WOMEN’S PARTY OF GREAT BRITAIN (1917-19): A FORGOTTEN EPISODE IN BRITISH WOMEN’S POLITICAL HISTORY Article accepted for publication in June 2016 Issue of Women’s History Review, a Special Issue edited by Barbara Bush, University of Sheffield and June Purvis, University of Portsmouth, titled Connecting Women’s Histories: the local and the global, published by Routledge Abstract This article discusses the Women’s Party, founded by Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst in November 1917 at a time when Britain was still fighting in World War One. It examines the origins and aims of the Women’s Party which, with the slogan ‘Victory, National Security and Progress’, conflated the winning of the war with the women’s cause. It is contended that global politics on the world stage as well as local politics at home shaped the agenda of the Women’s Party in many differing ways. Biographical Data June Purvis is an Emeritus Professor of Women’s and Gender History at the University of Portsmouth, UK. She has published extensively on women’s education in nineteenth-century Britain and on the suffragette movement in Edwardian Britain.
