LEVINAS AND THE NEW WOMAN WRITERS: NARRATING THE ETHICS OF ALTERITY by ANITA TURLINGTON Under the Direction of Leeanne Richardson, PhD ABSTRACT This study applies the ethical theories of Emmanuel Levinas to the novels and short stories of the major New Woman novelists of the fin de siècle in England. Chapter One introduces the study and its theoretical framework. Chapter Two discusses how New Woman writers confront their protagonists with ethical dilemmas framed as face-to-face encounters that can be read as the moment of ethics formation. They also gesture toward openness and indeterminacy through their use of carnivalesque characters. In Chapter Three, Levinas’s concepts of the said and the saying illuminate readings of polemical passages that interrogate the function of language to oppress or empower women. Chapter Four reads dreams, visions, allegories, and proems as mythic references to a golden age past that reframe the idea of feminine altruism. -

GENIUS, WOMANHOOD AND THE STATISTICAL IMAGINARY: 1890s HEREDITY THEORY IN THE BRITISH SOCIAL NOVEL by ZOE GRAY BEAVIS B.A. Hons., La Trobe University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2014 © Zoe Gray Beavis, 2014 Abstract The central argument of this thesis is that several tropes or motifs exist in social novels of the 1890s which connect them with each other in a genre, and which indicate a significant literary preoccupation with contemporary heredity theory. These tropes include sibling and twin comparison stories, the woman musician’s conflict between professionalism and domesticity, and speculation about biparental inheritance. The particulars of heredity theory with which these novels engage are consistent with the writings of Francis Galton, specifically on hereditary genius and regression theory, sibling and twin biometry, and theoretical population studies. Concurrent with the curiosity of novelists about science, was the anxiety of scientists about discursive linguistic sharing. In the thesis, I illuminate moments when science writers (Galton, August Weismann, William Bates, and Karl Pearson) acknowledged the literary process and the reading audience. I have structured the thesis around the chronological appearance of heredity themes in 1890s social novels, because I am arguing for the existence of a broader cultural curiosity about heredity themes, irrespective of authors’ primary engagement with scientific texts. Finally, I introduce the statistical imaginary as a framework for understanding human difference through populations and time, as evidenced by the construction of theoretical population samples – communities, crowds, and peer groups – in 1890s social fictions. -

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in context: the origins of the women’s movement in mid- Victorian Britain By Professor Lawrence Goldman In 1840 in London at the first World Anti-Slavery Convention, a woman rose to speak from the separate enclosure where all women attendees at the meeting had been corralled. There was consternation and uproar and she was silenced. The following day The Times carried an editorial on the meeting and made unkind remarks on the manners of our American cousins because the woman in question was from the United States. Her name was Elizabeth Cady Stanton and she is often compared with Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the equally famous sister of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the movement for women’s enfranchisement in America in the late-19th century and often attested that it was her treatment in London in 1840 which made her the leading American feminist of her generation. In Britain in 1840 no respectable woman would speak in public; that was the privilege of men only. Yet fast-forward to Birmingham in October 1857 and the opening congress of an organisation called the Social Science Association, and here, for the first time, 17 years later, a middle-class woman spoke in open and mixed company. Her name was Mary Carpenter and she spoke about her work rescuing street children in Bristol and educating them in so-called ragged schools. Miss Carpenter was already a famous female philanthropist and the audience for this landmark speech was so large that the meeting was delayed while everyone moved to a bigger venue. -
The Women's Suffrage Movement
The Women’s Suffrage Movement Today, all citizens, living in Northern Ireland, over the age of eighteen share a fundamental human right: the right to vote and to have a voice in the democratic process. One hundred years ago, women in Great Britain and Ireland were not allowed to vote. The Suffrage Movement fought for the right for women to vote and to run for office. This Movement united women from all social, economic, political and religious backgrounds who shared the same goal. The Representation of the People Act in 1832 was led through Parliament by Lord Grey. This legislation, known as the Great Reform Act excluded women from voting because it used the word ‘male’ instead of ‘people’. The first leaflet promoting the Suffrage Movement was published in 1847 and Suffrage societies began to emerge across the country. In 1867, Isabella Tod, who lived in Belfast established the Ladies’ Institute to promote women’s education. She travelled throughout Ireland addressing meetings about Women’s Suffrage. Frustrated by their social and economic situation, Lydia Becker led the formation of the Manchester National Society for Women’s Suffrage (NSWS) in 1867. In 1868, Richard Pankhurst, an MP and lawyer from Manchester, made a new attempt to win voting rights for women. While he was unsuccessful, his wife and daughter, Emmeline and Christabel, go on to become two of the most important figures in the movement. In 1897 the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was established and Millicent Garrett Fawcett was elected as its President. Between 1866 and1902 peaceful activities by NUWSS and others societies led to numerous petitions, bills and resolutions going before the House of Commons. -

Campaigning is often regarded as characteristic of the New Journalism of the fin de siècle, particularly in the form associated with W. T. Stead at the Pall Mall Gazette in the 1880s. New Journalism was persuasive, opinionated, and sensational. It displayed characteristics of the American mass-circulation press, including eye-catching headlines on newspaper front pages. The period covered by this thesis begins in 1840, with the Chartist Northern Star as the hub of a campaign on behalf of the leaders of the Newport rising of November 1839. -

INTRODUCTION The Female Relations of Victorian England IN 1844 A TEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL named Emily Pepys, the daughter of the bishop of Worcester, made the following entry in the journal she had begun to keep that year: “I had the oddest dream last night that I ever dreamt; even the remembrance of it is very extraordinary. There was a very nice pretty young lady, who I (a girl) was going to be married to! (the very idea!) I loved her and even now love her very much. It was quite a settled thing and we were going to be married very soon. All of a sudden I thought of Teddy [a boy she liked] and asked Mama several times if I might be let off and after a little time I woke. I remember it all perfectly. A very foggy morning.”1 Emily Pepys found the mere idea of a girl mar rying a lady extraordinary (“the very idea!”). We may find it even more surprising that she had the dream at all, then recorded it in a journal that was not private but meant to be read by family and friends. As we read her entry more closely, it may also seem puzzling that Emily’s attitude toward her dream is more bemused than revolted, not least because her prospective bride is “a very nice pretty young lady,” and marrying her has the pleasant aura of security suggested by the almost Austenian phrase, “It was quite a settled thing.” Even Emily’s desire to be “let off” so that she can return to Teddy must be ratified by a woman, “Mama.” A proper Victorian girl dreaming about marrying a pretty lady chal lenges our vision of the Victorians, but this book argues that Emily’s dream was in fact typical of a world that made relationships between women central to femininity, marriage, and family life. -
