Charles Elkin Mathews Collection MS
University Museums and Special Collections Service Charles Elkin Mathews Collection MS 392 The bulk of the collection consists of around 500 letters. Most were written to Mathews and concern some aspect of his work. Some were collected by Mathews and relate to literary and antiquarian matters 1811-c.1870. There are 48 letters from John Lane. Other major correspondents include Ernest Radford, Jack Butler Yeats and Richard Le Gallienne. There are also letters from William Butler Yeats, John Trivett Nettleship, Robert Bridges, Charles Henry Daniel, Roden Noel, William Watson and John Davidson, along with three letters from Ezra Pound and one from James Joyce. There is a variety of personal material, including draft reminiscences of Mathews' life and career. The rest of the collection relates to works published and consists of proofs, cuttings, publicity material, photographs of authors, prints of illustrative material including several by Jack Butler Yeats, and associated printed material. The collection of Elkin Mathews' papers is supported by around 400 books which were published under the Elkin Mathews imprint. The Collection covers the year’s c.1800 - 1938. The physical extent of the collection is 3 boxes containing c.650 items. Introduction Charles Elkin Mathews was born in Gravesend in 1851. As a young man, he served his apprenticeship in the book trade working for Charles John Stewart in London, managing Peach's library in Bath, and then returning to London to work for the firm of Messrs Sotheran in Piccadilly. In 1884 he opened an antiquarian and general bookshop at 16 Cathedral Close, Exeter, where he also began his publishing career, joining with other local booksellers in his first venture. -

LEVINAS AND THE NEW WOMAN WRITERS: NARRATING THE ETHICS OF ALTERITY by ANITA TURLINGTON Under the Direction of Leeanne Richardson, PhD ABSTRACT This study applies the ethical theories of Emmanuel Levinas to the novels and short stories of the major New Woman novelists of the fin de siècle in England. Chapter One introduces the study and its theoretical framework. Chapter Two discusses how New Woman writers confront their protagonists with ethical dilemmas framed as face-to-face encounters that can be read as the moment of ethics formation. They also gesture toward openness and indeterminacy through their use of carnivalesque characters. In Chapter Three, Levinas’s concepts of the said and the saying illuminate readings of polemical passages that interrogate the function of language to oppress or empower women. Chapter Four reads dreams, visions, allegories, and proems as mythic references to a golden age past that reframe the idea of feminine altruism. -

GENIUS, WOMANHOOD AND THE STATISTICAL IMAGINARY: 1890s HEREDITY THEORY IN THE BRITISH SOCIAL NOVEL by ZOE GRAY BEAVIS B.A. Hons., La Trobe University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2014 © Zoe Gray Beavis, 2014 Abstract The central argument of this thesis is that several tropes or motifs exist in social novels of the 1890s which connect them with each other in a genre, and which indicate a significant literary preoccupation with contemporary heredity theory. These tropes include sibling and twin comparison stories, the woman musician’s conflict between professionalism and domesticity, and speculation about biparental inheritance. The particulars of heredity theory with which these novels engage are consistent with the writings of Francis Galton, specifically on hereditary genius and regression theory, sibling and twin biometry, and theoretical population studies. Concurrent with the curiosity of novelists about science, was the anxiety of scientists about discursive linguistic sharing. In the thesis, I illuminate moments when science writers (Galton, August Weismann, William Bates, and Karl Pearson) acknowledged the literary process and the reading audience. I have structured the thesis around the chronological appearance of heredity themes in 1890s social novels, because I am arguing for the existence of a broader cultural curiosity about heredity themes, irrespective of authors’ primary engagement with scientific texts. Finally, I introduce the statistical imaginary as a framework for understanding human difference through populations and time, as evidenced by the construction of theoretical population samples – communities, crowds, and peer groups – in 1890s social fictions. -

Thomas Mann, World Author: Representation and Autonomy in the World Republic of Letters Tobias Boes, University of Notre Dame In her influential study The World Republic of Letters, Pascale Casanova draws a firm line between what she calls “national” and “international” writers. For national writers, “literary aesthetics (because they are connected with political questions) are necessarily neonaturalistic.” International writers, on the other hand, are described as “cosmopolitans and polyglots who, owing to their knowledge of the revolution that have taken place in the freest territories of the literary world, attempt to introduce new norms” (Casanova 110-11). There are a number of different criticisms that could be leveled at this distinction. Here, I want simply to point out the striking similarities between what Casanova alleges are universal sociological categories on the one hand, and a particular historicizing narrative about literary modernism on the other. Casanova insists, for instance, that the struggle for “autonomy,” which she defines as “literary emancipation in the face of political (and national) claims to authority” (39), represents the most distinctive characteristic of international writing. She thereby echoes claims that have been made about “modern” art since at least the late nineteenth century (for an overview of these debates, see Goldstone). Even her remapping of the struggle between “autonomous” and “dependent” modes of thought onto the terms “cosmopolitan” and “national” is echoed by recent trends within modernist scholarship (see for example Walkowitz). This homology is striking, especially since a very different kind of “international writer” (or, as I shall henceforth call them, “world author”) seems to have moved to the foreground in the present day. -

Modernism & Modernist Literature: Introduction
MODERNISM & MODERNIST LITERATURE: INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Broadly speaking, ‘modernism’ might be said to have been characterised by a deliberate and often radical shift away from tradition, and consequently by the use of new and innovative forms of expression Thus, many styles in art and literature from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are markedly different from those that preceded them. The term ‘modernism’ generally covers the creative output of artists and thinkers who saw ‘traditional’ approaches to the arts, architecture, literature, religion, social organisation (and even life itself) had become outdated in light of the new economic, social and political circumstances of a by now fully industrialised society. Amid rapid social change and significant developments in science (including the social sciences), modernists found themselves alienated from what might be termed Victorian morality and convention. They duly set about searching for radical responses to the radical changes occurring around them, affirming mankind’s power to shape and influence his environment through experimentation, technology and scientific advancement, while identifying potential obstacles to ‘progress’ in all aspects of existence in order to replace them with updated new alternatives. All the enduring certainties of Enlightenment thinking, and the heretofore unquestioned existence of an all-seeing, all-powerful ‘Creator’ figure, were high on the modernists’ list of dogmas that were now to be challenged, or subverted, perhaps rejected altogether, or, at the very least, reflected upon from a fresh new ‘modernist’ perspective. Not that modernism categorically defied religion or eschewed all the beliefs and ideas associated with the Enlightenment; it would be more accurate to view modernism as a tendency to question, and strive for alternatives to, the convictions of the preceding age. -

HEROES HANG WHEN TRAITORS TRIUMPH Martyrs Of World War Two MIKE WALSH BIOGRAPHY MIKE WALSH Mike Walsh is a veteran journalist, broadcaster and historian. A fugitive from renegade Europeans, leftists, palace journalists, he has shrugged off their wrath over 50 years of writing. His Irish-American father, Patrick had fought in four conflicts by the time he reached 40-years of age: The Irish peoples guerrilla war against the British Army‟s Black and Tans. These armed irregulars, dredged from England‟s prisons, were notorious for their viciousness. The Irish War of Independence and on to fight in the most ferocious hand-to-hand battles during the Spanish Civil War. Whilst on the frontlines he was a close associate of American war correspondent, Ernest Hemingway. Mike‟s father formed an enduring friendship with Ireland‟s celebrated playwright, Sean O‟Casey. Eventually his father served in the Royal Air Force during World War Two as an aircraft fitter / flier. Kathleen, Mike‟s well- educated mother also mentored his writing skills. A former novice nun she was a corresponding friend of Spain's Civil War revolutionary La Pasionaria. From the age of 26 the world-travelling Mike was consumed by a passion for truth and justice. Inevitably, this led him to the potpourri of lies, infamies, cover-ups and crimes committed by the Allies that militarily defeated the Workers Reich. By doing so they ensured the spread of Bolshevism, denial of freedom to nearly a score of Central European nations, the dismembering of the British Empire, and surrender to American imperialism. The Allied victory ensured that Bolshevism would fester for a further 45 years; this they call victory. -

SPOTLIGHT ON ENGLISH ELECTIVES SPRING 2018 ENGL2482 African American Literature and the "Problem" MWF 2 Cross listed with AADS4410 Satisfies Cultural Diversity Core Requirement In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B. Du Bois famously observes that to be black is to serially confront a question: "How does it feel to be a problem?" This course undertakes a survey of African American Literature as an ongoing mediation on the "problem" of being black, from the advent of racial slavery through to its contemporary afterlives. Reading broadly across a black literary tradition spanning four centuries and multiple genres, we will consider how black writers represent the "problem" of being black not merely as an unwelcome condition to be overcome, but an ethical orientation to be embraced over against an anti-black world that is itself a problem. From “Dickensian” workhouses to shady financiers, Victorian literature has provided touchstones for discussions of inequality today. This course will investigate how writers responded to the experience of inequality in Victorian Britain during an era of revolution and reaction, industrialization and urbanization, and empire building. Considering multiple axes of inequality, we will explore topics such as poverty and class conflict, social mobility, urbanization, gender, education, Empire, and labor. We will read novels, poetry, and nonfiction prose; authors include Alfred, Lord Tennyson; Elizabeth Gaskell; Charles Dickens; Elizabeth Barrett Browning; Mary Prince; Arthur Morrison; and Thomas Hardy. Gee In Partial Fulfillment of The Requirement for The Alfred University Honors Program May 7, 2018 Under the Supervision of: Chair: Allen Grove Committee Members: Susan Morehouse Laurie McFadden Introduction As Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, a double major in English and Communication Studies, and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, I wanted to incorporate all of my interests and studies into my Alfred University Honors thesis. At first, the options felt limited since so many theses are long scientific studies with numbers, graphs, and a few unexpected discoveries. But after talking to my advisor and other professors, I realized that my thesis did not have to be anything like that and could be completely my own. This is when I decided that I would get creative and publish a book for which I would also write the introduction. I had published a book before in the class titled “Publishing Practicum” with Dr. Allen Grove and remembered not only the time and effort I put into the book, but how much I enjoyed the entire process. I was able to practice the skills that I learned in past English classes while editing and writing the introduction, and also incorporate my knowledge of InDesign while designing the layout. Knowing I liked every piece of the project and that it combined almost all of my areas of study made me sure that I wanted to do it again for this thesis.
