INFORMATION FOR THOSE SUBMITTING SEMEN SAMPLES FOR DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS (FERTILITY ONLY)

ARRANGEMENTS FOR REQUESTS

A request has been made by your doctor or specialist to provide a semen sample for a diagnostic semen analysis. This gives an indication, although not an absolute assessment, of a man’s fertility potential.

Fertility Exeter is currently providing this service and samples will need to be submitted directly to the department at the address indicated below.

Samples can be produced off-site and delivered to the centre within 90 minutes of production but where this is not possible arrangements should be made to produce the sample on-site.

You will need to abstain from sexual intercourse or ejaculation of any kind, including masturbation, for at least 2 but no more than 3 days before you collect your sample. Longer or shorter periods of abstinence may give inaccurate results.

Please ensure that your full name, date of birth and time of sample production are clearly labelled on the sample pot and request form. The request form should also include the details of the requesting doctor and centre.

The sample should be collected by masturbation directly into the sample pot. As the first part of the ejaculate contains most of the sperm, it is important that this is collected, although you should aim to collect as much of the sample as possible. If there is accidental loss of some of the sample please make a note on the request form that the sample is incomplete.

Please do not use any form of lubrication including water during the production of the sample as these can be harmful to the sperm. In the event you have difficulties in producing the sample, this should be discussed with your requesting doctor or specialist.

Exposure of the sample to extreme temperatures is detrimental and ideally after production it should be kept as near to body temperature as possible.

When can I submit a sample that I have produced off-site?

If you are able to produce your sample off-site and submit to the department within the 90 minute time frame, drop-off times are as indicated below:-

 Monday mornings between 08:00 & 10:30  Friday morning between 08:00 & 10:30  Thursday mornings between 08:00 & 11:30

Please note this will exclude bank holidays

How do I make arrangements to use the on-site facilities to produce my sample?

If you are unable to submit your sample to the centre within the specified time frame after production, arrangements can be made with the centre to produce your sample on-site.

We are able to provide this facility on Thursday mornings and will require you to contact the centre directly to book in by telephoning 01392 405115. Booking times are available between 08:00 & 11:30.

Please note, for those requiring the on-site facilities to produce samples, we are unable to accommodate those who fail to pre-arrange an appointment.

Where do I submit my sample to?

Samples require direct submission to:-

Fertility Exeter Royal & Exeter Heavitree Hospital Gladstone Road Exeter EX1 2ED

Please note this is the Heavitree site opposite the Police Station and NOT the Wonford site.

Fertility Exeter is situated on the ground floor of Heavitree Hospital which is well signposted from the main entrance. As you enter the department, there is a collection box to your left for you to submit your sample.

Please ensure your sample is clearly labelled and submitted with the request form given to you by your doctor or specialist. Failure to do so will result in the sample being unable to be processed.

When and how will I know my result?

Results of your test will be sent to the requesting doctor within 2-3 weeks. No results will be given to or discussed directly with you from Fertility Exeter.
