Bill Cavaliere: “Naiche: Last Hereditary Chief of the ” Join Pathfinders January 9th, 2020 at 6:00pm in the Auditorium of the Arizona History Museum 949 East Second Street, Tucson AZ Naiche: Last Hereditary Chief of the Chiricahua Apaches covers the life of ’s youngest son. In 1876 he unexpectedly rose to the position of chief with the sudden passing of his older brother Taza. Naiche’s life was eventful yet ultimately tragic. He was constantly compared to his famous father Cochise. His authority was always overshadowed by , his associate. He faced the humiliation of being the chief who was responsible for surrendering his people, as well as other factors. Chiricahua Chokonen This PowerPoint presentation covers Naiche’s N’de Chief Naiche early life, his association with Geronimo, the surrender in 1886, his life as a POW and his later years. Several rare photos are featured.

Bill Cavaliere is president of the Cochise County Historical Society and sits on the board of the Arizona Historical Society’s southern chapter. He lectures frequently on the Chiricahua Apaches at colleges and historical societies. He has written articles for numerous magazines Bill Cavaliere at the and historical journals, and recently Order of Indian Wars finished his first book. Bill retired in 2012 after 28 years in law enforcement, all on the border. He is the former sheriff of Hidalgo County NM. Prior to this he worked for the US Forest Service in the Chiricahua Mountains. He and his wife Jill live on a cattle ranch and own the Four Bar Cottages near Portal AZ. Bill Cavalier This is a Brown Bag meeting so bring your own supper. Pathfinders’ Board will provide dessert and coffee. The meeting is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome. Free parking is available one block west of the Museum in the Arizona Historical Society garage at the northeast corner of East Second Street and North Euclid Avenue. Use the East Second Street entrance; drive straight in, do not turn left.
