Description: Lt. Charles B. Gatewood (1853–96), an educated Virginian, served in the Sixth U.S. Cavalry as the commander of Indian scouts. Gatewood was largely accepted by the Native peoples with whom he worked because of his efforts to understand their cultures. It was precisely this connection between Gatewood and the Indians, and with Geronimo and Naiche in particular, that led to his involvement in the last Apache war and his work for Indian rights. Incredibly detailed reading from someone who lived it. This book is hands down one of my favorite historical texts I own and reads very easily. The amount of knowledge Lt. Gatewood possessed, not only of the Southwestern United States but of the customs and language of the Apache peoples is nothing short of amazing and makes for some interesting reading. Its incredible that he took the time to write as he did and Im extremely glad he did; to hear and read of the events that unfolded during the course of his service in the Arizona Territory during that period of time and his friendship with and service in efforts to help such figures as Geronimo, Nana and Cochise, among others makes for some great reading both as a historical text and as an entertaining read in its own right.
