Chronically short of money and with no fixed address, he bounces from place to place, sleeping on the couches of the decreasing number of friends whom he has not yet alienated with his prickliness. His companion is one friend’s cat, for whom he is an unwilling guardian. While he doesn’t particularly like the cat, it seems to be the one stable relationship in his life. One of his way-stations, with a singing duo, dredges up his romantic history with its female half. Like all of his relationships it seems to have led to many complications and promises little future.

Midway through the story Llewyn embarks on a road trip to Chicago, tagging along with a nightmarish odd couple: a gasbag jazz musician and his closemouthed “valet,” who acts as chauffeur and, when he can be moved to speak, yes-man. The trip is Llewyn’s attempt to enlist a famous Chicago music promoter to act as his manager. He fails here—and succeeds only in losing his cat. He ends up back in New York pretty much where he started. A final encounter with the husband of an Appalachian folk singer ends his story with a comeuppance that frames the story’s central question: comeuppance for what?

INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS is the portrait of the artist as an ambitious and talented musician who can’t seem to get out of his own way. It will feature live musical performances from the main character and his peers, recreating the music that flourished in the legendary clubs of in the early 60’s.
