Resumption of the session The session suspended on Thursday 10 October 2019 was resumed. 2. Opening of the sitting The sitting opened at 17.07. 3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sittings The minutes of the sittings of 9 October 2019 and 10 October 2019 were approved. 4. Corrigenda (Rule 241) (follow-up) Corrigenda P9_TA(2019)0237(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0377(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0378(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0391(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0399(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0438(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0431(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0432(COR01), P9_TA(2019)0439(COR01) and P9_TA(2019)0435 had been announced in plenary on Wednesday 9 October 2019 (minutes of 9.10.2019, item 9). In accordance with Rule 241(4), these corrigenda were deemed approved as no request had been made by a political group or Members reaching at least the low threshold that they be put to the vote. 5. Announcement by the President The President announced that the joint position of the AFET and BUDG Committees on the extension of the European Union Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian crisis, announced in plenary on Wednesday 9 October 2019 (min- utes of 9.10.2019, item 8), had not been contested before the end of the 24-hour period. The joint position had therefore been officially forwarded to the Commission. 6. Action taken on unfinished business (Rule 240) In accordance with Rule 240, second paragraph, the Conference of Presidents had ruled, on 16 October 2019, on the requests to resume or continue the consideration of the procedures listed in Annex 1 (minutes of 21.10.2019 annex 1). 8. Appointment of the head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office The President announced that, at its meeting on 16 October 2019 and following the deliberations of the LIBE and CONT Committees, the Conference of Presidents had approved the appointment by common accord of Parliament and the Council of Laura Codruța Kövesi as head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The President stated that he had been tasked with signing the joint decision of Parliament and the Council to appoint Laura Codruța Kövesi. 9. Signing of acts adopted in accordance with the ordinary legislative procedure (Rule 79) The President announced that, on Wednesday 23 October 2019, he would sign, jointly with the President of the Council, four acts adopted under the ordinary legislative procedure. 30.4.2021 EN Off icial Jour nal of the European Union C 157/5 Monday 21 October 2019 He also announced that, on Thursday 24 October 2019, he would sign, jointly with the President of the Council, three acts adopted under the ordinary legislative procedure. The titles of the acts would be published in the minutes of Thursday 24 October 2019. 11. Announcement by the President The President announced that, following the renewed negotiations between the European Union and the Government of the United Kingdom and the endorsement of the modified Withdrawal Agreement by the Council the previous week, the Council had amended its draft decision on the conclusion of the agreement the previous day and had transmitted it, together with the updated text of the agreement, to the European Parliament earlier that afternoon.

According to a statement you made on behalf of the European Union on 6th December, this spurious process took place in the absence of electoral conditions that could have guaranteed its credibility, without any respect for political pluralism, and in an atmosphere of persecution and disqualification of democratic leaders whose legitimate rights were curtailed. Your statement concludes that such circumstances could not consider this process credible, inclusive, and transparent and therefore the results did not represent the will of the Venezuelan people. That initial statement was confirmed on 6 January of this year by a new declaration, in similar terms to those expressed on 6 December, and by the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council of 25 January. These reiterated the lack of recognition of the electoral process and regretted the behaviour of the authorities of the Maduro regime, whose actions are preventing a solution to the serious crisis in Venezuela. We were surprised and gravely concerned to learn that on 14th April, at your request, senior officials of the European External Action Service received the aforementioned delegation, comprising Iris Varela, Pedro Carreño and Desirée Santos Amaral, at the EEAS headquarters.

In the United Kingdom, the election for the country’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. The elections come at a crucial junction for UK-EU relations, and are likely to have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with the rest of Europe: a surge in support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) could lead to a Britain that is increasingly dis-engaged from the EU policy-making process. In parallel, the current UK Government is also conducting a review of the EU’s powers and Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly pushed for a ‘repatriation’ of powers from the European to the national level.     Ex-British Prime Minister received into Catholic Church LONDON – Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair became a Catholic during a private ceremony in London. Mr. Blair, previously an Anglican, was received into full communion with the Catholic Church by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster. Mr. Blair was sponsored at the Mass of reception by his wife, Cherie, a Catholic. The Dec. 21 Mass at Archbishop’s House, the cardinal’s private residence, was attended by Mr. Blair’s family and close friends. Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said in a statement Dec. 22 that he was “very glad” to welcome Mr. Blair into church. “For a long time he has been a regular worshipper at Mass with his family and in recent months he has been following a program of formation to prepare for his reception into full communion,” the cardinal said. “My prayers are with him, his wife and family at this joyful moment in their journey of faith together.” Mr. Blair, 54, served as British prime minister from May 1997 until June 2007. He now serves as envoy to the Middle East for the Quartet, a group comprised of the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia. He was admitted into the church using the liturgical rite of reception of a baptized Christian, which involved him making a profession of faith during the course of the Mass. He was given doctrinal and spiritual preparation by Monsignor Mark O’ Toole, the cardinal’s private secretary, and also made a full confession before his reception. For most of his adult life, Mr.
