  • Rethinking the UK-EU Relationship in Post-Brexit Britain
Rethinking the UK-EU Relationship in Post-Brexit Britain Article by Beatrice White November 27, 2020 Over four years since the controversial Brexit referendum, the prospect of a no- deal exit from the EU seems increasingly likely for the UK. Amid this uncertainty, the Green Party of England and Wales must adopt a clear position on the future UK-EU relationship, tackling key questions about the role of the UK in today’s world. While the challenges of operating as a small party in a Conservative- dominated political landscape cannot be underestimated, opportunities also emerge to strengthen old collaborations and build new ones with allies across Europe. With the end of the transition period fast approaching, time is running out for Britain and the EU to ratify a Brexit deal. The European Parliament has announced plans to hold an additional plenary between Christmas and New Year, to have chance to vote on a potential deal which has still failed to materialise as deadlines pass one after the other. A no-deal exit for the United Kingdom seems increasingly likely, thanks to the rhetoric and actions of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Government, despite the continued attempts of Members of Parliament to take this option off the table. In this context, it might seem surprising that Brexit was not a topic high on the agenda at the Autumn Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales, which took place online in October, particularly given the impact that a deal, or lack thereof, will have on a wide range of areas from trade and the economy to fisheries and the future of the UK as a union.

In the United Kingdom, the election for the country’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. The elections come at a crucial junction for UK-EU relations, and are likely to have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with the rest of Europe: a surge in support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) could lead to a Britain that is increasingly dis-engaged from the EU policy-making process. In parallel, the current UK Government is also conducting a review of the EU’s powers and Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly pushed for a ‘repatriation’ of powers from the European to the national level. These long-term political developments aside, the elections will also have more direct and tangible consequences.

  • Green Transport Plan
1 | P a g e With thanks to all the authors and main contributors to this work. Dr Caroline Lucas Caroline was the first Green MP elected, wining the seat of Brighton Pavilion in East Sussex. She is contesting her seat at the May general election, and while she is not in the Northwest, she has none the less pushed transport to the top of the political agenda with her Private Members Bill on rail, which calls for the railways to be put back into public hands. And for this we in the Northwest party want to thank her. Gina Dowding Gina is a Green County Councillor in Lancashire and a member for over 20 years. A graduate of Nottingham Trent University, she has been fighting for a better deal for Lancashire. Alan Francis Alan, who helped draft this document, has severed as the National Transport Speaker for the Green Party of England and is the Green candidate for the Buckingham constituency in the May General Election. He was chair of the party’s National Executive Committee for two years and has also been chair on both Milton Keynes Transport Partnership and Milton Keynes Rail Users Group, campaigning for the East West Rail Link, which will put Winslow back on the rail network. He is committed bringing the railways back into public ownership as well as starving to improve bus and rail services and cut fares across the whole country. Dr Daniel Gordon Daniel, a specialist on the politics of transport, is a Senior Lecturer in European History at Edge Hill University and a graduate of both Oxford & Sussex University.

  • European Elections in the UK Media Briefing 7Th May 2014 UKIP and the 2014 European Parliament Elections
European Elections in the UK Media Briefing 7th May 2014 UKIP and the 2014 European Parliament elections Dr Philip Lynch ([email protected]) & Dr Richard Whitaker ([email protected]) University of Leicester UKIP and the 2014 European Elections Philip Lynch ( [email protected], @drphiliplynch ) and Richard Whitaker ( [email protected], @rickwhitaker ) Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Leicester UKIP go into the 2014 European elections in a far stronger position than they did five years earlier. The crucial differences are first, that UKIP have not experienced the decline in support in general election polling that they normally do after a European election. On the contrary, they are now consistently placed in third position in polls of general election vote intentions. Second, their ratings in polls of European election vote intention are some ten points higher on average than they were in the run up to the 2009 contest for seats in the European Parliament (EP). Third, they have more than double the number of members and a much better, even if still small base in local councils having secured 147 seats in the 2013 local elections. Fourth, while they have benefitted in the past from Conservative supporters lending UKIP their vote, they are in an even better position to do so this time around given that the Tories are now in government. On top of that, if UKIP’s campaign to win even more support from working class voters is successful, they will make headway in areas where Labour are traditionally strong. The presence of the Liberal Democrats in government alongside the collapse of the BNP add to the auspicious conditions for UKIP in 2014.
