Brijean Signs to Ghostly International & Shares New July 22, 2020 For Immediate Release Brijean Signs To Ghostly International & Shares New Single "Moody" Photo by Jack Bool Brijean - the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart - announces signing to Ghostly International and shares new single “Moody.” The easy-grooving, ephemeral cut “Moody” captures Brijean’s signature sound in just over two minutes: the dazzling, golden-hued haze of percussive beats and honeyed vocals. Stuart says the track is “a quick gentle trip” that started in a living room — recording with Murphy’s drum mentor Pepe Jacobo — windows open, stream-of-consciousness lyrics flowing. Murphy, an accomplished DJ, session and live player in Oakland’s diverse music scene has emerged as one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls). In 2018, she began recording songs with multi-instrumentalist and producer Stuart, who shares a background in jazz and pop in bands such as Bells Atlas, Meernaa, and Luke Temple. Murphy’s musical talents are family heirlooms: her father, percussionist and engineer Patrick Murphy, taught Brijean her first patterns on a pair of congas that she inherited from the late Trinidadian steel drum legend Vince Charles (Neil Diamond). Growing up in LA’s Glassell Park, Murphy was raised by a cadre of honorary aunts and uncles – a deep bench of jazz, latin and soul musicians in their own rites. This meant she grew up regaled by musical lore – larger than life tales of jazz luminaries, psychedelic trips and obscure cultural enclaves – sampling some of those family stories and weaving them into her work. Growing up outside of Chicago, Stuart found his way into jazz clubs and festivals as a teenager, frequently going to hear Jeff Parker, Fred Anderson, and other members of the AACM. While attending the University of Michigan, he studied under Detroit jazz royalty, Robert Hurst and Geri Allen. After college, Stuart became intrigued by the music of J Dilla and Moodymann, and began learning production and exploring the connections between jazz, house, and hip hop. Eventually dubbed Brijean, the project grew out of marathon sessions at their intimate home-studio, wedged between touring schedules that rarely-overlapped. Their first effort, Walkie Talkie (released by Native Cat Recordings in 2019), found Murphy taking the mic for the first time to deliver dreamy dance tracks that felt home-cooked and effortlessly chic. Her layered percussion and hypnotic, expressive vocals coupled with Stuart’s production and harmonic palette evoked shades of disco, ‘90s house, and a sly pop sensibility. Ghostly International has also re-released Walkie Talkie alongside “Moody” which is the first taste of new, forthcoming material.

One only needs to glance at the Top 40 to see that a big portion of today’s hit artists use a dance template, among them Roll Deep, Chase and Status, Flo-Rida, Swedish House Mafia, Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP, Kelly Rowland and David Guetta, to name just a few. Positiva/Virgin A&R director Jason Ellis, whose sign- ings include Deadmua5, Japanese Popstars and Riva Starr’s I Was Drunk, believes dance acts are benefiting from the market swinging back towards electronic music, “For the last 18 months there’s been a real shift; people are looking for something fresh,” he says. One such artist that Ellis sees as benefiting from the swing of the purchasing pendulum is Virgin’s David Guetta, who is enjoying considerable success on both sides of the Atlantic. “David was coming into contact with and drum & bass is also having a revival with Hospital 2001. “Electroclash came through the underground in artists like will.i.am and Kelly Rowland through his Fuck and RAM Records being the only two residencies to max 2001 and was very inspiring.

COMFORT/DISCOMFORT: ALLYSON MITCHELL’S QUEER RE-CRAFTING OF THE HOME, THE MUSEUM AND THE NATION by Julie Hollenbach A thesis submitted to the Department of Art In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (January, 2013) Copyright © Julie Hollenbach, 2013 Abstract Through an exploration of Toronto-based artist Allyson Mitchell’s craft-art, this thesis investigates the complexities surrounding the functions and roles of public and private spaces; particularly the home and the fine art museum within Canadian society. I propose a reading of Mitchell’s art practice, activism, scholarship, and curatorial activities that focuses on a queering of both private domestic space and public social space through a conflation of the two. Mitchell’s textile installations make intimate and cozy the otherwise impersonal space of the public art museum, while Mitchell queers the heteronormative space of the family home by turning it into a public art institution, an archive and a classroom. Mitchell’s bright textile enclosures, Hungry Purse: The Vagina Dentata in Late Capitalism and Menstrual Hut, Sweet Menstrual Hut, for example, visibly disrupt the sanitized and impersonal space of the art museum, disrupting the dominant ideological framework that privileges normative assumptions of sexuality and sexual identity, and exclusionary hierarchies of class, able-bodiedness and access. While Mitchell’s theatrical textile installation, Ladies Sasquatch, has predominantly been theorized as a queer critique of the myths of femininity, gender, sexuality, and the detrimental treatment of the female body within popular media; I present a reading of Ladies Sasquatch as a radical decolonizing spectacle that has the potential to interrupt larger nationalistic and colonial narratives reproduced by museums.
