(Y2M) CODA - December 2001 Say it lounge … (Y2M) CODA - November 2002 Say it lounge … (Thomas Martin) Reviews (USA) GROOVE DISTRIBUTION (Chicago) - November 2002 Narrow Mindings EP Brand new 12" from Patchworks aka Cinnamone, a lot could be said, but when such a good producer gets down to a deep house 12" it is unbelievable. This guy could be straight from Detroit with an incredible sense of jazz and soul groove. Absolutely unmissable. The perfect deep jazz house 12"! JOYRYDE RECORDS (Burlington) - November 2002 Narrow Mindings EP Cinnamone returns with some incredible jazz tinged deepness. The first track has a soulful Pepe Bradock feel and get a remix from Pamplemousse's Boogymann.

July 22, 2020 For Immediate Release Brijean Signs To Ghostly International & Shares New Single "Moody" Photo by Jack Bool Brijean - the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart - announces signing to Ghostly International and shares new single “Moody.” The easy-grooving, ephemeral cut “Moody” captures Brijean’s signature sound in just over two minutes: the dazzling, golden-hued haze of percussive beats and honeyed vocals. Stuart says the track is “a quick gentle trip” that started in a living room — recording with Murphy’s drum mentor Pepe Jacobo — windows open, stream-of-consciousness lyrics flowing. Murphy, an accomplished DJ, session and live player in Oakland’s diverse music scene has emerged as one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls). In 2018, she began recording songs with multi-instrumentalist and producer Stuart, who shares a background in jazz and pop in bands such as Bells Atlas, Meernaa, and Luke Temple. Murphy’s musical talents are family heirlooms: her father, percussionist and engineer Patrick Murphy, taught Brijean her first patterns on a pair of congas that she inherited from the late Trinidadian steel drum legend Vince Charles (Neil Diamond). Growing up in LA’s Glassell Park, Murphy was raised by a cadre of honorary aunts and uncles – a deep bench of jazz, latin and soul musicians in their own rites. This meant she grew up regaled by musical lore – larger than life tales of jazz luminaries, psychedelic trips and obscure cultural enclaves – sampling some of those family stories and weaving them into her work.

  • Culture Lab Detroit Shines a Light on the Work of Outstanding Immigrant Artists
November 30, 2016 Culture Lab Detroit shines a light on the work of outstanding immigrant artists By Sarah Rose Sharp Photo courtesy of Chido Johnson. As millions of people living in the United States hold our breath in the face of a president-elect who seems hell-bent on waging war on immigrants, a series of recent events orchestrated by Culture Lab Detroit proved themselves to be exceptionally timely. "Culture Lab Detroit's 2016 theme is 'Walls,'" Culture Lab Detroit founder Jane Schulak says. "Participants in this year's programs are all connected by their interest in reconsidering the structures which define our lives." MetroTimes | CLD shines a light on the work of outstanding immigrant artists 1 This was certainly the case at "Art and the immigrant experience," a panel discussion featuring performers and artists Migguel Anggelo, Kia Arriaga, Rola Nashef, and Chido Johnson, and moderated by Gracie Xavier, director of corporate and economic development strategy at Global Detroit. "We chose panelists whose work specifically addresses the immigrant identity, and the challenges of living between two cultural worlds," Schulak says. "This is more important today than it was even a week ago. It was particularly interesting to discuss the evolution of voting privileges for immigrants following this election. I think overall we found that we all have a deep connection to our cultural roots, but also evolve as members of the community we surround ourselves with. "No matter what our background, we ultimately share the same human experience." The panel, which took place earlier this month, was packed to standing room, and underscored the ways in which immigrants have an experience that is both unique and universal.

  • Detroit Version US
Extract From GLOBAL TEKNO 1.0 Jean-Yves Leloup, Jean-Philippe Renoult, Pierre Emanuel Rastoin (US-English translation by Black Sifichi) Detroit, summer 1998 by Jean-Philippe Renoult There are no charter planes to Detroit and certainly no direct flight from Paris. When we give our destination to the customs officer who carries out the usual formalities at the stop over in Philadelphia, he bursts out laughing: - What, why the hell are you going to Detroit? - Well... to take landscape pictures. - Good luck, you will need it! It’s a fact, Detroit Michigan is not listed in the tour operators schedule but it is certainly present on the world map of contemporary electronic music. In the uncomfortable plane, which finally takes us there, we go over and over the story which ravers and techno heads repeat like a founding myth. After Kraftwerk, who blended with one unique rhythm Stockhausen and Pop music, followed a black trinity who gave birth to the sound of techno. It developed here, on the polluted edges of Lake Huron. The three founders are Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson. All three, born respectively in 1962, 1963 and 1964, instilled a black, funky and sensual groove into one of the first purely technological dance music. An essential mutation, which Derrick May sums up in a quote, which has remained well-known: « Our music is the meeting in one and the same elevator of George Clinton and Kraftwerk. It is the mirror image of Detroit: a complete error. » Of all our destinations, Detroit was the most anachronistic but also the most fundamental.

  • Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman Tackles the Multi-Farious Scene in One of America's Biggest Cities
Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman tackles the multi-farious scene in one of America's biggest cities. Los Angeles has always been a capital of pop culture. Outside of rave, however, it's never had much of a reputation for its dance music culture. Until recently, that is. The efforts of local promoters have given rise to enormous EDM festivals, the Low End Theory-driven beat scene and thriving techno and house crews—and have led to the city finally becoming internationally recognized. Now, it seems, a place that houses four million people inside the city limits and 18 million in the greater Southland area, is finally representing itself on the world stage. True to its geography—a set of suburbs fronting as a megalopolis—Los Angeles doesn't have a dominant sound or theme. Instead, there are many scenes tugging for attention and battling over the few legitimate dance venues the city has to offer. It's enormously difficult to acquire a liquor license in LA, thanks in no small part to club-owning cowboys like Eddie Nash (of Wonderland murder fame), and those that do can't serve all that late anyway. Most nights last from 10 until 2 or 3 AM (a reality that often results in seeing your headlining DJ for two hours). It doesn't help that many of the historical clubs/bars in places like Hollywood and West Hollywood are a tough sell to fans of underground music, as the price points, degree of parking difficulty and douchebaggery quotient are all high. That means that many parties of note take place downtown or in other east side neighborhoods (if not a private estate).

This is especially true in the pluralistic, post-colonial societies that have given rise to some of today's most popular social dance forms: Cuba, Brazil, Jamaica, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States. Beginning with a history of the interaction between European and African forms of social dance across the New World, from the rise of the quadrille to the foxtrot to the sock-hop, this course will examine a number of case studies of “DJ cultures” or social dance movements built around the relatively new experience of dancing together to sound recordings: disco, reggae, cumbia, hip-hop, house, and EDM, to name a few. Our discussions of specific musical or dance forms will be grounded in the social and cultural contexts in which they become meaningful in practice, including the values expressed by the ways people have danced together as well as how dancing has been policed and represented by different constituencies in specific historical moments.
