Over ten years ago, the City of Chicago recognized the contributions that Jesse and house music had made to the culture of the city by proclaiming July 17, 1997, as “Jesse Saunders and Pioneers of House Music Day” in Chicago. Saunders’ “behind the music” tour through the early days of Chicago’s house music scene is especially important due to the current void of information on the genre (despite Mayor Richard M. Daley’s proclamation, nothing much seems to have happened since 1997 in terms of documenting or celebrating house music). For lovers of Chicago house music, Jesse’s memoir is an intriguing look at how this assorted and colorful cast of characters– including Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles, among others–fell into creating a new genre of music. "Culture Lab Detroit's 2016 theme is 'Walls,'" Culture Lab Detroit founder Jane Schulak says. "Participants in this year's programs are all connected by their interest in reconsidering the structures which define our lives." MetroTimes | CLD shines a light on the work of outstanding immigrant artists 1 This was certainly the case at "Art and the immigrant experience," a panel discussion featuring performers and artists Migguel Anggelo, Kia Arriaga, Rola Nashef, and Chido Johnson, and moderated by Gracie Xavier, director of corporate and economic development strategy at Global Detroit. "We chose panelists whose work specifically addresses the immigrant identity, and the challenges of living between two cultural worlds," Schulak says. I think overall we found that we all have a deep connection to our cultural roots, but also evolve as members of the community we surround ourselves with. When we give our destination to the customs officer who carries out the usual formalities at the stop over in Philadelphia, he bursts out laughing: - What, why the hell are you going to Detroit? - Well... to take landscape pictures. - Good luck, you will need it! It’s a fact, Detroit Michigan is not listed in the tour operators schedule but it is certainly present on the world map of contemporary electronic music. In the uncomfortable plane, which finally takes us there, we go over and over the story which ravers and techno heads repeat like a founding myth. After Kraftwerk, who blended with one unique rhythm Stockhausen and Pop music, followed a black trinity who gave birth to the sound of techno. It developed here, on the polluted edges of Lake Huron. The three founders are Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson. All three, born respectively in 1962, 1963 and 1964, instilled a black, funky and sensual groove into one of the first purely technological dance music. An essential mutation, which Derrick May sums up in a quote, which has remained well-known: « Our music is the meeting in one and the same elevator of George Clinton and Kraftwerk. It is the mirror image of Detroit: a complete error. » Of all our destinations, Detroit was the most anachronistic but also the most fundamental.

    Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman tackles the multi-farious scene in one of America's biggest cities. Los Angeles has always been a capital of pop culture. Outside of rave, however, it's never had much of a reputation for its dance music culture. Until recently, that is. The efforts of local promoters have given rise to enormous EDM festivals, the Low End Theory-driven beat scene and thriving techno and house crews—and have led to the city finally becoming internationally recognized. Now, it seems, a place that houses four million people inside the city limits and 18 million in the greater Southland area, is finally representing itself on the world stage. True to its geography—a set of suburbs fronting as a megalopolis—Los Angeles doesn't have a dominant sound or theme. Instead, there are many scenes tugging for attention and battling over the few legitimate dance venues the city has to offer. It's enormously difficult to acquire a liquor license in LA, thanks in no small part to club-owning cowboys like Eddie Nash (of Wonderland murder fame), and those that do can't serve all that late anyway. Most nights last from 10 until 2 or 3 AM (a reality that often results in seeing your headlining DJ for two hours). It doesn't help that many of the historical clubs/bars in places like Hollywood and West Hollywood are a tough sell to fans of underground music, as the price points, degree of parking difficulty and douchebaggery quotient are all high. That means that many parties of note take place downtown or in other east side neighborhoods (if not a private estate).

It would be a mistake to exclude the impact that disco had upon house, techno, acid house, and dance music in general. While disco evolved mostly in the dance capital of America (New York), it proposed the idea that danceable songs could be mixed smoothly together, allowing for long term dancing to previously recorded music. Prior to the disco era, nightlife dancing was restricted to bands or jukeboxes, which limited variety and options of songs and genres. The selections of the DJs mattered more than their technical excellence at mixing.

What did he mean by that? In many important ways, house music continued where it left off when it was dramatically cast from American society in the now infamous Disco Demolition Night of July 1979. Riding on the wave of many important social upheavals of the 1960s, disco laid a few important foundations for dance music as we know it today. It also challenged the pop industry power-structure by creating new avenues for music to top the Billboard charts. However, in the final analysis the popularity of disco became its undoing. House music continued to ride on a few of the important waves of disco. The longstanding success of house, however, was in a new development: the independent artist/producer. Young people who began to experiment with early consumer electronic instruments were responsible for creating this new genre of music. This new and exciting sound took hold in Chicago, Detroit and the UK before spreading around the world as the sound we know today as house music. 1 Thirty eight years after the term "House Music" was coined in 1982, the genre has incontestably become a global musical and cultural phenomenon. Few genres in music history can claim this kind of influence.

During the 1980s three revolutions took hold of popular music: the emergence of disc-jockeys as a creative force (in particular in techno music), the advent of hip-hop (and therefore of the "rapper"), and the marriage of industrial music, heavy metal and hardcore (generically associated with the "cyber-punk" culture). The idea of rapping was imported into New York by the Jamaican immigrants, who were already familiar with "toasting" (a reggae artist talking in rhyme over the instrumental sections of a record).
