The Music Yesterday Stand by George Troia, Jr. and Today Local 5 President

“If you are going through Hell, keep going!”- Winston Churchill

Do we have a choice? This is the question I keep asking myself daily as we deal with the coronavirus pandemic. In the past, I have often turned to those that have faced what I considered to be insurmountable difficulties for the answers of how they dealt with them which is why I have chosen one of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes to find a way through this morass.

In this edition of the Music Stand, I will report on how we have been dealing with shutdowns and cancellations, report on some notable passings, and tell you how we plan to move ahead. I will also update you on the AFM- EPF MEPRA application process. And yes, as Gloria Gaynor sang, We “will Survive!” A look back at Bob Allison, a Detroit media personality & Local 5 member, Continued on page 2 in his heyday as the host of the Ask Your Neighbor WWJ-AM radio program. AFM has many allies in Congress. We work with them to advocate on issues that affect musicians every day, from copyright protection to pension reform. The long-term success of AFM’s legislative efforts depends on making sure that our allies in the House of Representatives and the Senate remain in office. Donating to their reelection campaigns is the best way to achieve this. Therefore, it is necessary that we raise contributions to AFM’s political action committee, the AFM April Board Meeting via video conference with the Local 5 TEMPO Fund. Robert Allesee aka Bob Allison September 20, 1932 - March 25, 2020

Robert Allesee, better known as Bob Allison, was a Detroit media personality, philanthropist, and host of the Ask Your Neighbor radio program. On February 5, 1962, Allison launched his daily radio show on WWJ-AM. The program consisted mainly of housewives calling in to share recipes and helpful tips with each other. For more than 50 years, Ask Your Neighbor was a popular radio show that could be heard weekday mornings on Detroit’s WNZK-AM (690).

By the 1960s, Allison was a local celebrity. In addition to his work in radio, he appeared on TV as the Twin Pines Dairy milkman on the Milky’s Party Time kids show and was host of the popular series Bowling for Dollars.

His light, conversational radio show developed such a following that it continued even after WWJ converted to an all-news format in 1978. The advertisers on Ask Your Neighbor saw success and wanted the show to continue, so Allison bought air time at another station. The program was heard across North America and overseas via the show’s web page.

Allison and his wife, Maggie, are known as two of ’s most ardent philanthropists, committing time and millions of dollars to universities, health care organizations, arts groups and other worthwhile causes throughout the region.

The gifts include a $3 million donation in 2000 to Hospice of Michigan for research, education and community outreach aimed at improving care for people who are seriously ill and a $2 million contribution to support Wayne State University’s dance and theater department in 2005.

Another undisclosed gift from the couple supported Wayne State University’s Department of Communication’s launch of the Bob Allesee Visiting Professorship in Media Studies. The professorship enabled the department to bring distinguished media professionals to campus work directly with students.

Other gifts from the couple supported organizations including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Historical Society and the now- shuttered Women’s Survival Center of Oakland County.

Ernest “Mickey” Atkins August 7, 1948 - March 18, 2020

Ernest Michael Atkins, affectionately known as Mickey, was born August 7, 1948 to the late James and Marie Atkins in Detroit, MI.

Mickey attended Detroit Public Schools where he graduated from Mackenzie High School. He began singing, dancing and playing guitar at a very young age. His talents led to him winning talent contests and his love for entertaining began to blossom. He then began to play the keyboard and organ which later led him on a path of musical adventures and discovery.

At just 18 years old, he became the original keyboard player for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, touring all over the world. Funkadelic was the child of R&B and mastermind, George Clinton, who formed the band to back up his vocal group The Parliaments in the mid-60s. Influenced by the melding of rock and soul that came from legendary acts like James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic made its own distinct sound, which was at times both looser and free form than other bands of the day. Mickey’s work on the album “Funkadelic” has been cited as highly influential in the field of Funk and R&B organ playing.

He later served as Minister of Music for God’s Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Ferndale.
