Texas Public Schools and Charters Texas Public Schools and Charters Texas School Directory, 2014-15 39 40 Texas School Directory, 2014-15 Texas Public Schools and Charters, Explanation of Symbols and Terms County, District, Region, School The information on Texas public schools is arranged by counties, school districts (with education service center [ESC] region number following), and schools. Addresses, telephone numbers, and zip codes are shown immediately following the counties and school districts. County-District-School Number These columns show the identification numbers used by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for Texas counties, school districts, and schools. The counties of the state are numbered from 1 through 254 in alphabetical order. In 2014-15, there were 1,246 educational entities with TEA-assigned school district numbers. TEA-assigned school numbers are unique identification numbers only; they do not denote school types (e.g., elementary school, junior high school, high school). Schools are numbered from 001 through 698. Schools are categorized as: regular instructional; alternative instructional; juvenile justice alternative education program instructional (JJAEP); disciplinary alternative education program instructional (DAEP); charter/regular instructional; charter/alternative instructional; charter/JJAEP instructional; or charter/DAEP instructional. County and District Superintendents, Principals The names of county superintendents, district superintendents, and school principals are shown opposite the administrative units they supervise. Grades This column shows grade levels taught, including early education (EE), prekindergarten (PK), kindergarten (KG), and ungraded (UG). Enrollment This column shows the fall 2013 enrollment for each school district and school. If the school configuration for a district changed for the 2014-15 school year, the school counts may not add to the district total. Revised school configurations for 2014-15 are received in the summer of 2014. When enrollment is fewer than five students or could be imputed from district totals, the count is masked with a dash (–) to protect student anonymity. Appraised Valuation and Tax Rates Appraised valuation is in thousands. Tax rates are per $100 of appraised valuation. Values are those reported by districts in their 2013-14 official budgets. The official name is MONTESSORI FOR ALL (CDN 227-826). Effective March 20, 2014, THE EXCEL CENTER became a new charter school district. The official name is THE EXCEL CENTER (CDN 227-827). Barquet Poesía cubana: primeras manifestaciones hasta 1990 Orlando Rodríguez Sardiñas (Rossardi) Cubanos emigrados, exililados y cubano-americanos Los cubanos han llegado a los Estados Unidos en olas sucesivas de emigraciones y en su mayoría con carácter de exiliados desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta la fecha, y se han dis- tribuido con preferencia primero en las ciudades de Tampa, Cayo Hueso y Nueva York, y más tarde, ya avanzado el siglo XX, en la ciudad de Miami. Otros grupos, desde 1850 hoy día, pueden ser localizados en casi todas las grandes ciudades norteamericanas, especial- mente aquellas situadas en la costa del Atlántico. Desde muy temprano, en su residencia en suelo extranjero el cubano se ha mantenido intelectualmente activo intentando con gran afán divulgar sus creaciones artísticas, publicando su producción literaria —con par- ticular afecto la poesía— en folletines y periódicos, además de lograr reunirla luego en for- ma de libro, como es muestra la antología El laúd del desterrado (Nueva York, 1858), que reú- ne la producción poética de un grupo de emigrados de entonces como José Agustín Quintero (1829-1885), Pedro Santacilia (1826-1910), Pedro Ángel Castellón (1820-1856), Leo- poldo Turla (1818-1877) y Juan Clemente Zenea (1832-1871). Ya por esas fechas los esfuerzos editoriales de los cubanos serán múltiples y muy variados. Algunos publican colecciones como el poemario El Arpa del Proscripto (Nueva York, 1856), de Pedro Santacilia y otros sacan a la luz más de una docena de periódicos y folletos de todo tipo como El Horizonte (Nueva York, 1850), de Miguel Teurbe Tolón, La verdad (Nueva York, 1848-1860), El Mulato (Nue- va York, 1854) y El Eco de Cuba (Nueva York, 1855), escritos en español aunque con algún con- tenido en inglés y que dedicaban sus páginas mayormente a dar informes del conflicto de los criollos con el Gobierno de la Península, pero que a su vez ofrecían, aquí y allá, poemas y artículos sobre arte y literatura de plumas distinguidas.

The only one of its kind in the nation, the program has honored top Cuban artists, many at the start of their careers, who have gone on to play an influential role in the development of their disciplines.

Resumo Mariel – Revista de Literatura y Arte foi fundada em 1983, em Miami, por escritores cubanos exilados nos Estados Unidos durante o exílio massivo de Mariel (1980), e circulou até 1985 nos Estados Unidos, América Latina e Europa. Seu Conselho de Direção foi composto pelos escritores Reinaldo Arenas, Reinaldo García Ramos, e pelo artista plástico e escritor Juan Abreu. Como revista literária, um de seus principais objetivos foi divulgar a literatura e a arte cubanas, principalmente a produzida por escritores da autodenominada “geração de Mariel”, colocando-se como elo identitário entre esses artistas.

    GLADYS TRIANA BIO Gladys Triana was born in Camagüey, Cuba, and has resided in New York City since 1975. Triana completed her B.A. at Mercy College in 1976 and M.A. at Long Island University in 1977. She also studied printmaking at San Fernando University in Madrid, Spain from 1970-1972. In 1957, Triana’s paintings caught the eye of artist Mario Carreño, then the director of the Museo of Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. Carreño decided to include her work in a group exhibition at the museum, which would mark the beginning of a long career for the self-taught Triana, who has since been described as one of the most authentic and versatile Cuban artists of her generation. Living in New York City since 1975, her work has rebelled—in ways overt and subtle—against society’s attempts to stereotype women and impose limitations on their freedom of expression. Triana has received two Cintas Fellowships in art, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s CALL Program grant. From 1986 to 1988, Triana made 20 drawings in honor of women artists and intellectuals—including Käthe Kollwitz, Gabriela Mistral, Alexandra Exter, Mary Cassat, and others—whose work had broken new ground in denouncing political oppression, war, and social injustice. Her first installation at the Museum of the Americas in Washington, which opened to critical acclaim in 1990, was an eloquent tribute to women trapped by domestic life. Indeed, her art often references women’s daily activities, exposing each mundane movement as an ephemeral event, and imbuing it with a hidden burst of creativity and life.
