FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 23, 2018 MEDIA CONTACT Kat Harding | (919) 664-6795 | [email protected] North Carolina Museum of Art to Add Five Sculptures to Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park Additions include three loans from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and a site-specific installation by North Carolina artist Daniel Johnston Raleigh, N.C.—The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) will add to its outdoor art collection, installing five new works in the fall of 2018 and continuing through the spring of 2019. The works include site-specific temporary and permanent installations, as well as three works on long-term loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Hirshhorn Sculpture Loans (now on view) Lunar Bird by Joan Miró, 1945, Wheeler Courtyard, West Building Three Red Lines by George Rickey, 1966, The Plaza Untitled by Ellsworth Kelly, 1986, South Lawn, West Building Three monumental sculptures by masters of 20th-century art—Joan Miró, George Rickey, and Ellsworth Kelly—arrived in August on long-term loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Installed in various sites around West Building, including the entrance Plaza, front lawn, and North Garden, these works animate the NCMA landscape with a diverse array of artistic expression. Lunar Bird by Joan Miró resembles ancient votive sculptures and reflects his interest in the cosmos, with its crescent moon–shaped face and arms reaching toward the sky. A figure in the early-20th-century surrealist art movement, Miró saw art as a way for the subconscious mind to express itself. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Eve Aschheim: Drawings and Photograms September 8 – October 15, 2016 Lori Bookstein Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of Eve Aschheim’s drawings and photograms – two distinct but related groups of work. This is the artist's fourth solo show with the gallery. With the simplest of tools and a limited palette, Aschheim evokes a domain under pressure in her drawings. In this latest body of work, Aschheim adds tonal washes of ink to her repertoire of graphite, ink and black and white gesso lines and brush strokes. Together, they form tenuous configurations on the verge of dispersal. Indicative of the artist’s interest in states of transition, Aschheim’s work is animated by a sense of motion, lyricism, transference and transformation – something becomes something else. Pictorial structures seem to be disassembling, assembling and re-forming. The result is a dynamic reality that offers the viewer different possibilities of seeing one image and then another without being able to settle on a final picture. In the photograms, exhibited for the first time with the gallery, Aschheim has found a powerful way to capture light and dark, line and space. Initially, working with the photographer Emmet Gowin, Aschheim made photograms directly from her translucent drawings, a kind of X-ray. In the recent photograms, Aschheim adds other processes in which she layers drawn elements and objects, makes multiple exposures, as well as draws with an altered flashlight. Whereas the first process leads to a negative reversal image of her original Mylar drawing, the recent photograms, which are composed in the darkroom, are unique and have no intact source. -

Jazz Images June 19 – September 14, 1979 An exhibition displaying the work of black photographers photographing jazz. The show focused on the Institute of Jazz Studies of Rutgers University and contemporary black photographers who use jazz musicians and their environment as subject matter. The aim of the exhibition was to emphasize the importance of jazz as a serious art form and to familiarize the general public with the Jazz Institute. The black photographers whose work was exhibited were chosen because their compositions specifically reflect personal interpretations of the jazz idiom. Includes the work of Anthony Barboza, Rahman Batin, Leroy Henderson, Milt Hinton, and Chuck Stewart. Courtesy the artists New York, NY, July 9, 2013—This fall, The Studio Museum in Harlem is thrilled to present The Shadows Took Shape, a dynamic interdisciplinary exhibition exploring contemporary art through the lens of Afrofuturist aesthetics. Coined in 1994 by writer Mark Dery in his essay “Black to the Future,” the term “Afrofuturism” refers to a creative and intellectual genre that emerged as a strategy to explore science fiction, fantasy, magical realism and pan-Africanism. With roots in the avant-garde musical stylings of sonic innovator Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, 1914–1993), Afrofuturism has been used by artists, writers and theorists as a way to prophesize the future, redefine the present and reconceptualize the past. The Shadows Took Shape will be one of the few major museum exhibitions to explore the ways in which this form of creative expression has been adopted internationally and highlight the range of work made over the past twenty-five years. On view at The Studio Museum in Harlem from November 14, 2013 to March 9, 2014, the exhibition draws its title from an obscure Sun Ra poem and a posthumously released series of recordings. -
