Course Description and Objectives

This course introduces the basic concepts of law and economics. Economics is an important tool to understand the effect of legal rules on people's behavior. We will focus on the areas of , and , and and punishment in applying economics to the analysis of law. Specific topics to analyze are including the economic function of ; remedies for breach of contract; marriage and divorce, how to correct failure from with legal actions; the economic motive to commit ; death penalty, gun controls, privacy, versus ; property rules. We will also explore the way economics can be used to understand the workings of the legal system itself.

By the end of this semester, students will be able to (i) demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the legislative and judicial decisions presented in class, (ii) identify key economic aspects of the decisions, (iii) critically analyze the impact on people’s conduct and social .

The course will assume that students are equipped with intermediate level of microeconomic theory regarding consumer/producer optimization problem, expected , , equilibrium, and externalities.

Exams, Case Analysis, and Grades

1. EXAMS

(1) There will be two exams on Feb 22 (W) and Apr 28 (F). The second exam is on the day of your final exam. It is scheduled on Friday, April 28 at 3:00 PM. The two exams account for 70% of your course grade. Of the two exams, the best score will account for 40%, and the other score will account for 35%. These exams are NOT cumulative. (2) All tests are based on my lecture materials. (3) Make-up exams are NOT offered in any cases. (4) A student arriving late to an exam session will not be allowed to take the exam if other examinees have left before the student arrives.

3. GRADES

Course grades will be determined on the basis of your relative performance in the class. Your course work requires
