Mirrors and Encyclopaediae Woodrow Kernohan, 2013 When speaking and writing about his paintings and exhibitions, Damien Flood cites the mirrored worlds of utopian/dystopian fiction, from Athanasius Kircher ’s “Mundus Subterraneus ” (1665) to Ren é Laloux ’s animation “Fantastic Planet ” (1973), as jumping-off points. Topographic elements, apparitions of experimental psychology and titles that conjure the immaterial are his recurrent motifs of the fantastic. An archaeology of forms upon overlaid semitransparent grounds destabilize the picture plane, reordering taxonomies and estranging the familiar. Discovering these worlds anew through “Counter Earth ” (2010), “History of the Visitation ” (2011) and “Theatre of the World ” (2012), what follows is my own encounter with the very same mirrors and encyclopaediae. A PDF facsimile of the perplexing “Voynich Manuscript ” led to renowned cryptographers ’ attempts at decipherment, and reacquaintance with Jorge Luis Borges ’ fabulous encyclopaediae, analogous to the Manuscript, that infuse and disintegrate the basis of knowledge, instigating Michel Foucault to write his archaeology of the human sciences, “The Order of Things ” (1966). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Now I held in my hands a vast methodical fragment of an unknown planet's entire history, with its architecture and its playing cards, with the dread of its mythologies and the murmur of its languages, with its emperors and its seas, with its minerals and its birds and its fish, with its algebra and its fire, with its theological and metaphysical controversy . • Charlotte Wilson, the ''Woman Question'', and the Meanings of Anarchist Socialism in Late Victorian Radicalism
IRSH, Page 1 of 34. doi:10.1017/S0020859011000757 r 2011 Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis Charlotte Wilson, the ‘‘Woman Question’’, and the Meanings of Anarchist Socialism in Late Victorian Radicalism S USAN H INELY Department of History, State University of New York at Stony Brook E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: Recent literature on radical movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has re-cast this period as a key stage of contemporary globali- zation, one in which ideological formulations and radical alliances were fluid and did not fall neatly into the categories traditionally assigned by political history. The following analysis of Charlotte Wilson’s anarchist political ideas and activism in late Victorian Britain is an intervention in this new historiography that both supports the thesis of global ideological heterogeneity and supplements it by revealing the challenge to sexual hierarchy that coursed through many of these radical cross- currents. The unexpected alliances Wilson formed in pursuit of her understanding of anarchist socialism underscore the protean nature of radical politics but also show an over-arching consensus that united these disparate groups, a common vision of the socialist future in which the fundamental but oppositional values of self and society would merge. This consensus arguably allowed Wilson’s gendered definition of anarchism to adapt to new terms as she and other socialist women pursued their radical vision as activists in the pre-war women’s movement. INTRODUCTION London in the last decades of the nineteenth century was a global crossroads and political haven for a large number of radical activists and theorists, many of whom were identified with the anarchist school of socialist thought.

The Registration of Marriage of Ethel and Wilfrid Voynich (From Voynichiana: documents, images, and research illuminating the lives of Wilfrid and Ethel Voynich and of Anne M. Nill, Wilfrid Voynich's assistant and Ethel's life-long companion after Voynich's death.) © Colin MacKinnon 2013 The Registration of Marriage of Ethel and Wilfrid Voynich1 The Voyniches were married on September 6, 1902, a Saturday, in the Register Office of the Civil Parish of St. Giles, South Bloomsbury, close to where they had been living as man and wife (see The Voyniches in the 1901 Census of England and Wales). The entry into the register of their marriage is filled out in one hand – probably that of the Registrar, Emanuel A. Newbery. Neither Wilfrid nor Ethel signed it. Voynich’s father’s name is listed as “Leonard Antoni Fulgenci[illegible] Habdank-Wojnicz” and his profession as “Barrister.” Ethel’s father’s name is listed as “George Boole (deceased)” and his profession as “Professor of mathematics.” The document raises numerous questions. For one, Ethel is named on it as “Ethel Lilian Voynich,” Wilfrid as “Wilfrid Michael Habdank-Woynicz.” What did the Registrar make of the similarity of their two last names? Particularly since Ethel’s father’s name was given on the document as “Boole.” Why is Ethel’s residence listed on this certificate as “Moss Lane, Pinner”? Moss Lane, Pinner was the address of Frederick Reilly, one of the referees on Voynich’s naturalization papers (see The Naturalization Papers of Wilfrid Voynich). Did Ethel assume 1 JPEG courtesy of Gerry Kennedy.

WELCOME NOTE Dear Passengers, Welcome aboard Bulgaria Air! You’ve probably heard many times that the gap between rich and poor is widening more and more. But if the World Bank is to be believed, it almost mirrors the gap between educated and uneducated. Never before have the level and quality of education contributed as much to success in human life. Nill, Wilfrid Voynich's assistant and Ethel's life-long companion after Voynich's death.) © Colin MacKinnon 2013 colinmackinnon.com Ethel Lilian Voynich’s Will The following documents are a copy of Ethel Voynich’s will (pp. 2-5) and its notice of probate (p. 6). (A transcription of the main text of the will is appended, pp. 7-8.) The documents were released on September 6, 2011 by the Library of Congress under the Library’s equivalent of the Freedom of Information Act. The two documents are part of a file at the Library pertaining to Anne Nill’s bequest to that institution of Ethel’s music and other memorabilia (see Anne Nill’s Will and Her Bequest to the Library of Congress Of Ethel Voynich’s Unpublished Music ). Ethel’s will was probably sent to the Library to confirm that Anne owned the rights to her music, published and unpublished, and could leave it to that institution. Where the original of Ethel’s will is, or if it still exists, is unknown. The will is dated December 24, 1943. The notice of probate was filed December 8, 1960 (Ethel died July 27 of that year). Ethel named Anne Nill executor of her will or, if for some reason Anne could not serve, Hans Thacher Clarke. Clarke, a native of Harrow, England, was a well-known chemist and amateur musician. In 1928 he moved from Rochester, New York, where he had been working for the Eastman Kodak Company since 1914, to New York City to work at Columbia University’s 168th Street medical complex.

Recipe was a project that luckily gave me the opportunity to take creative liberties and compose music based on what I was feeling from the scene. I realised early on that as this would be a play showing and not a full performance, there would likely be moments when the technical design elements would have to take over from the actors to portray the action and emotion, I kept this at the back of my mind when composing my music. After some research in to genres of music that I could explore in the show, I found two that interested me, and I thought could be an exciting angle. Jazz and hip hop are both genres of music that grew from oppression. Though it may not be the same kind of oppression that women have experienced through history, it is still a common thread that can link the worlds together.
