    Mirrors and Encyclopaediae Woodrow Kernohan, 2013 When speaking and writing about his paintings and exhibitions, Damien Flood cites the mirrored worlds of utopian/dystopian fiction, from Athanasius Kircher ’s “Mundus Subterraneus ” (1665) to Ren é Laloux ’s animation “Fantastic Planet ” (1973), as jumping-off points. Topographic elements, apparitions of experimental psychology and titles that conjure the immaterial are his recurrent motifs of the fantastic. An archaeology of forms upon overlaid semitransparent grounds destabilize the picture plane, reordering taxonomies and estranging the familiar. Discovering these worlds anew through “Counter Earth ” (2010), “History of the Visitation ” (2011) and “Theatre of the World ” (2012), what follows is my own encounter with the very same mirrors and encyclopaediae.     IRSH, Page 1 of 34. doi:10.1017/S0020859011000757 r 2011 Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis Charlotte Wilson, the ‘‘Woman Question’’, and the Meanings of Anarchist Socialism in Late Victorian Radicalism S USAN H INELY Department of History, State University of New York at Stony Brook E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: Recent literature on radical movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has re-cast this period as a key stage of contemporary globali- zation, one in which ideological formulations and radical alliances were fluid and did not fall neatly into the categories traditionally assigned by political history. The following analysis of Charlotte Wilson’s anarchist political ideas and activism in late Victorian Britain is an intervention in this new historiography that both supports the thesis of global ideological heterogeneity and supplements it by revealing the challenge to sexual hierarchy that coursed through many of these radical cross- currents. The unexpected alliances Wilson formed in pursuit of her understanding of anarchist socialism underscore the protean nature of radical politics but also show an over-arching consensus that united these disparate groups, a common vision of the socialist future in which the fundamental but oppositional values of self and society would merge. This consensus arguably allowed Wilson’s gendered definition of anarchism to adapt to new terms as she and other socialist women pursued their radical vision as activists in the pre-war women’s movement.     KORESPONDENCE 2019. gads 73. sējums 4. numurs LATVIJAS SIEVIETES SABIEDRISKAJĀ UN VALSTS DZĪVĒ UN MĀKSLĀ (1860–1944) Ilgars Grosvalds Atslēgas vārdi: Latvijas sievietes, cariskās Krievijas laiks, neatkarīgā Latvija, glezniecība, grafika, tēlniecība, lietišķā māksla Inženierzinātņu doktors Ilgars Grosvalds (1927–2019) bija ķīmiķis, zinātnieks un peda- gogs, strādāja gan būvniecības nozarē, gan bija pasniedzējs un ķīmijas, fizikas un astronomi- jas skolotājs. Neatņemama viņa dzīves sastāvdaļa bija zinātnes popularizēšana, kas balstīta zinātnes vēstures pētījumos. Pēdējos dzīves gados viņš intensīvi vāca un publicēja datus par Latvijas sievietes lomu dažādās jomās — izglītībā, sabiedrībā un valsts dzīvē, mākslā. 2013. gadā izdota neliela Grosvalda publikācija “Latvijas Universitātes sievietes augstākajā izglītībā un zinātnē XX gs. pirmajā pusē” (32 lpp). Šo tēmu autors vēlējās paplašināt pub- likācijās LZA Vēstu A daļas izdevumos. Žurnāla 2014. gada 5./6. numurā līdzautorībā ar Latvijas Ķīmijas vēstures muzeja līdzstrādnieku Ivanu Griņeviču publicēts raksts “Latvijas sievietes ceļā uz augstāko izglītību un zinātni”. Otru rakstu par šo tēmu “Latvijas sievietes izglītībā un zinātnē (1860–1944)” publicējām 2017. gada 2. numurā. Nesen LZA Vēstu A daļas redakcija saņēma vēl divus Ilgara Grosvalda rakstus: “Latvijas sieviete sabiedriskajā un valsts dzīvē (1860–1944)” un “Latvijas sieviete glezniecībā un tēlniecībā (1860–1944)”. Rakstu autora nodoms bija apkopot vienuviet 20. gadsimta sākuma ievērojamāko Latvijas sieviešu dzīvesstāstus un veikumu. Divus pēdējos iesniegtos rakstus Ilgara Grosvalda dzīves laikā nepaguvām izdot, turklāt raksts par Latvijas sievietēm mākslā nebija pabeigts, tomēr, godinot autora piemiņu, esam lēmuši nodot lasītājam šo rakstu apkopojumu.1 Latvijas sieviete sabiedriskajā un praktiskā intelektuālā darbā. Rīgā sāka strā- valsts dzīvē (1860–1944) dāt pirmās divas ārstes: Anna Kizelbaša (dzī- No idejas un nacionālās kustības izauga ves dati nav atrasti), kas diplomu medicīnā latviešu nācija un valsts.

Nill, Wilfrid Voynich's assistant and Ethel's life-long companion after Voynich's death.) © Colin MacKinnon 2013 The Registration of Marriage of Ethel and Wilfrid Voynich1 The Voyniches were married on September 6, 1902, a Saturday, in the Register Office of the Civil Parish of St. Giles, South Bloomsbury, close to where they had been living as man and wife (see The Voyniches in the 1901 Census of England and Wales). The entry into the register of their marriage is filled out in one hand – probably that of the Registrar, Emanuel A. Newbery. Neither Wilfrid nor Ethel signed it. Voynich’s father’s name is listed as “Leonard Antoni Fulgenci[illegible] Habdank-Wojnicz” and his profession as “Barrister.” Ethel’s father’s name is listed as “George Boole (deceased)” and his profession as “Professor of mathematics.” The document raises numerous questions. For one, Ethel is named on it as “Ethel Lilian Voynich,” Wilfrid as “Wilfrid Michael Habdank-Woynicz.” What did the Registrar make of the similarity of their two last names? Particularly since Ethel’s father’s name was given on the document as “Boole.” Why is Ethel’s residence listed on this certificate as “Moss Lane, Pinner”? Moss Lane, Pinner was the address of Frederick Reilly, one of the referees on Voynich’s naturalization papers (see The Naturalization Papers of Wilfrid Voynich). The case of Latvian poet, playwright and politician, Rainis, is being explored. Analysis of his intentions in two stages of politically relevant activities, i.e. stage of unattached intellectual and the politician, reveal continuity.This continuity in combination withreluctance to set a new agenda for the new career contributed to the clash of identities. Furthermore, Rainislaid claim on holding the authority of leader which is related to the symbolic power. INTRODUCTION The subject of involvement of intellectuals,agents representing various artistic and aesthetic fields, in socially political processes of non-free societies, has earned an extensive scholarly attention in various contexts. One has to agree that fields of cultural and scholarly work provide a comparatively high degree of freedom under repressive regimes,thus their political relevance may be invokedper se(Cvijetic 1999). However, empirical studies give evidence for the fact that intellectuals who were once fighting against the repressive regime, use to change the sides of entrenchment after the regime overthrow, and turn into state government officials or politicians under the newly-established or the restoreddemocratic regime.

Inese Grumolte ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to analyze the reasons for Rainis’ appreciation of the phenomenon he labels as the ‘basic class’. The Latvian writer attributes this concept to the members of society who provide the livelihood for themselves by doing mainly the manual labour. Although thus a praise for the proletariat is voiced, the reasons are more nuanced than the common Soviet interpretation allowed to see. Rainis sees the ‘Basic class’ as a crucial agent in the struggle for Latvian national emancipation. At the same time, the article seeks an answer to the question why, according to Rainis, bourgeoisie is reluctant to fight this struggle. INTRODUCTION The 150th birth anniversary of the Latvian poet and playwright Jānis Pliekšāns (pseudonym Rainis1) is approaching (2015). In Latvia, his name does not require commentaries. However, this does not imply that his works are drained as objects of scholarly interest, at least looking from the angle of political science. The well-known Polish philosopher Leszek Kolakowski, when juggling intellectually with the basic postulates of the main political ideologies, once proved: being a conservative liberal socialist is not impossible (Kolakowski 1997: 225–229). These were the nineties of the 20th century. Reasonings based on dichotomies, such as ‘those who are not with us are against us’, seemed to have disreputed themselves ; the ‘end of the history’ was proclaimed (Fukuyama 1998: 86). When heading towards the ideological consensus, it seemed that the political ideologies are not as incompatible as it has seemed before.
