The following analysis of Charlotte Wilson’s anarchist political ideas and activism in late Victorian Britain is an intervention in this new historiography that both supports the thesis of global ideological heterogeneity and supplements it by revealing the challenge to sexual hierarchy that coursed through many of these radical cross- currents. The unexpected alliances Wilson formed in pursuit of her understanding of anarchist socialism underscore the protean nature of radical politics but also show an over-arching consensus that united these disparate groups, a common vision of the socialist future in which the fundamental but oppositional values of self and society would merge. This consensus arguably allowed Wilson’s gendered definition of anarchism to adapt to new terms as she and other socialist women pursued their radical vision as activists in the pre-war women’s movement. Nill, Wilfrid Voynich's assistant and Ethel's life-long companion after Voynich's death.) © Colin MacKinnon 2013 The Registration of Marriage of Ethel and Wilfrid Voynich1 The Voyniches were married on September 6, 1902, a Saturday, in the Register Office of the Civil Parish of St. Giles, South Bloomsbury, close to where they had been living as man and wife (see The Voyniches in the 1901 Census of England and Wales). The entry into the register of their marriage is filled out in one hand – probably that of the Registrar, Emanuel A. Newbery. Neither Wilfrid nor Ethel signed it. Voynich’s father’s name is listed as “Leonard Antoni Fulgenci[illegible] Habdank-Wojnicz” and his profession as “Barrister.” Ethel’s father’s name is listed as “George Boole (deceased)” and his profession as “Professor of mathematics.” The document raises numerous questions. For one, Ethel is named on it as “Ethel Lilian Voynich,” Wilfrid as “Wilfrid Michael Habdank-Woynicz.” What did the Registrar make of the similarity of their two last names? Particularly since Ethel’s father’s name was given on the document as “Boole.” Why is Ethel’s residence listed on this certificate as “Moss Lane, Pinner”? Moss Lane, Pinner was the address of Frederick Reilly, one of the referees on Voynich’s naturalization papers (see The Naturalization Papers of Wilfrid Voynich). (A transcription of the main text of the will is appended, pp. 7-8.) The documents were released on September 6, 2011 by the Library of Congress under the Library’s equivalent of the Freedom of Information Act. The two documents are part of a file at the Library pertaining to Anne Nill’s bequest to that institution of Ethel’s music and other memorabilia (see Anne Nill’s Will and Her Bequest to the Library of Congress Of Ethel Voynich’s Unpublished Music ). Ethel’s will was probably sent to the Library to confirm that Anne owned the rights to her music, published and unpublished, and could leave it to that institution. Where the original of Ethel’s will is, or if it still exists, is unknown. The will is dated December 24, 1943. The notice of probate was filed December 8, 1960 (Ethel died July 27 of that year). Ethel named Anne Nill executor of her will or, if for some reason Anne could not serve, Hans Thacher Clarke. Clarke, a native of Harrow, England, was a well-known chemist and amateur musician. In 1928 he moved from Rochester, New York, where he had been working for the Eastman Kodak Company since 1914, to New York City to work at Columbia University’s 168th Street medical complex.

Research Collab Works - Recipe Design Justification From the very beginning of this process I knew I wanted to compose as much music as possible for this play. Recipe was a project that luckily gave me the opportunity to take creative liberties and compose music based on what I was feeling from the scene. I realised early on that as this would be a play showing and not a full performance, there would likely be moments when the technical design elements would have to take over from the actors to portray the action and emotion, I kept this at the back of my mind when composing my music. After some research in to genres of music that I could explore in the show, I found two that interested me, and I thought could be an exciting angle. Jazz and hip hop are both genres of music that grew from oppression. Though it may not be the same kind of oppression that women have experienced through history, it is still a common thread that can link the worlds together.

The following analysis of Charlotte Wilson’s anarchist political ideas and activism in late Victorian Britain is an intervention in this new historiography that both supports the thesis of global ideological heterogeneity and supplements it by revealing the challenge to sexual hierarchy that coursed through many of these radical cross- currents. The unexpected alliances Wilson formed in pursuit of her understanding of anarchist socialism underscore the protean nature of radical politics but also show an over-arching consensus that united these disparate groups, a common vision of the socialist future in which the fundamental but oppositional values of self and society would merge. This consensus arguably allowed Wilson’s gendered definition of anarchism to adapt to new terms as she and other socialist women pursued their radical vision as activists in the pre-war women’s movement. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925, he was renowned for his provocative political views and for plays such as Mrs Warren’s Profession, Arms and the Man, Candida, The Devil’s Disciple, Caesar and Cleopatra, Man and Superman, Major Barbara, The Doctor’s Dilemma, Misalliance, Pygmalion, Heartbreak House, the mammoth five-part Back to Methuselah, and Saint Joan. These and other Shaw plays had been performed not just throughout the English-speaking world, but in foreign-language productions in Europe, Asia, and South America. The world première of Pygmalion was in German (in Vienna) in 1913, and the controversial Mrs Warren’s Profession (written in 1893-94) was performed in Japan and China before the censor allowed the first public production in England in 1925.
