Plants in managed landscapes PLNT 3331 landscape assessment assignment Semester 1 2010 Brett Schreurs Analysis Continued 20366408
The diagrams to the top right and far right show the very high pedestrian traffic flow and lim- ited shade coverage respective- ly.
The two images to the right and far right show the views of James oval which I wanted to only obstruct to a minor degree. As well as the function of the site as a passage corridor. Land scape Proposal & Analysis 20366408
Current Conditions -No soil - paved surfaces and amenities underneath restrict space -plants - 6 Queensland brushbox Lophostemon confertus -current trees are in poor condition -grass of oval could be invasive -paving is red and extensive -pedestrian traffic is very heavy -extreme lack of shade -no shelter - rain/heat
Current opportunities -Multiple access points -Trees - existing soil -Night-time access lighting -views (towards James oval) -Use roof catchment for water -opportunity for rain water tanks -could divert oval water (May alter pressure)
Current and foreseen Problems -existing trees (Dying also the removal) -Paving - creates hot surface -fire hydrants need access -Underground utilities - prevent planting -bike racks (relocate) -balconies/views - restrict built height -high pedestrian flow (traffic) needs to be open -Rubbish bins and lamps - provide amenities -Westerly winds - no coverage -maintenance of proposed site -lack of soil -Needs maintenance access -need to find water source
Landscape Proposal
This design is shaped by the heavy traffic usage, open and harsh nature of the site in summer and the lack of suitable soil. The seating elements when used will create a central hub like environment within the University with design opportu- nities to add functions such as a mobile coffee bar.
The main vegetation types include soft, grey foliaged plants, hardy cascading grevilleas, creeper vines, small sized trees and plants that I find have an in- teresting an unexpected flower (white and black Kangaroo paws and lily). The con- trasts within the site are considered being soft or harsh, colourful or a blank silver. Incorporated seat- ing elements are placed to provide an amenity within the space. Both can be used as a social gathering point and area to view activities on the oval.
Without altering to high traffic flow to a de- gree.
The Utilities below the Shade/Vine Structure site restricted the ability to plant, hence why planter beds were developed. The two Pandorea species are used to create a dense shade coverage. Used as they can tolerate full sun, though maintenance is needed to first in courage growth and regular pruning.
