Buenos Aires: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2004 From National Icons to Oblivion: The Story of Popular Literature William Acree University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill The story of popular literature, especially that produced prior to the twentieth century, is one that involves lots of forgetting. Sometimes this forgetting is purposeful as in the case of critics who fail to mention such texts in literary histories, erasing their existence over time. At other times this forgetting is a gradual process. Authors of popular literature are often anonymous or write under a Acree 261 pseudonym, or when they sign their real names, these tend to fade away. Like their authors’ names, the texts themselves are often forgotten because they did not survive or were not meant to be preserved in library collections, and because the success of such stories attracted the wrath of critics and opponents. It is no surprise, then, that reprints of popular literary texts are rare, as is their inclusion in academic settings today. Likewise, until recently the scholarly study of popular literature, its creators, and its impact across social classes, has not been “popular.” For her bold focus on one of Argentina’s most prolific writers of popular literature, Eduardo Gutiérrez, and on the more recognizable though understudied author of naturalist novels, Eugenio Cambaceres, Alejandra Laera’s El tiempo vacío de la ficción is a welcome contribution to the fields of Latin American popular culture and literary studies. -

This dissertation also analyzes the ways in which melodrama recast different senses of community. With an archival perspective, it traces how diverse social actors appropriated melodrama for individual and Group aGendas, as they entered the modern political pact, the pact of representation. More specifically, and by bridGinG Latin American and Euro-American theories of melodrama, this dissertation traces key narrative conventions and argues that, across the social spectrum, actors recast the dynamics of representation durinG the period by visualizing classed, raced, and gendered anxieties vis-à-vis change throuGh the interrelated media of literature, illustrated periodicals, and film. -

Day) Uruguay and Argentina are two of Latin America’s most complete examples of how the intersection between print media and collective identities developed. Today visitors to the capital cities of Buenos Aires or Montevideo cannot help but notice the deep roots of written culture that are visible in the city centers. It is no surprise that these two countries have the highest literacy rates in Latin America, which has been the case since the late nineteenth century. The intriguing questions are these: How did literacy, written culture, and the clear public concern with writing and reading become both so widespread and integral to identity in these two nations? What makes the connection between print, the public sphere, and politics in the Río de la Plata unique? “From Reading to Reality” addresses these questions by providing a panoramic view of the development of Rioplatense print culture from the arrival of the first printing presses at the outset of the wars of independence in the early 1800s, to the first centenary celebration of independence in 1910. -

Entertaining Culture: Mass Culture and Consumer Society in Argentina, 1898-1946 Sarah Goldberg Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Sarah Goldberg All rights reserved ABSTRACT Entertaining Culture: Mass Culture and Consumer Society in Argentina, 1898-1946 Sarah Goldberg “Entertaining Culture: Mass Culture and Consumer Society in Argentina, 1898-1946” is a study of Argentine mass culture in a new consumer society: a new cultural dynamic that emerged around the turn of the century in Buenos Aires. This dynamic entailed a redefinition not only of the relationships between culture, creators, and publics, but also of those categories themselves. Early twentieth-century Argentine mass culture was a heterogeneous realm of cultural production and consumption in which varied and often conflicting ideologies, aesthetic convictions, and class or party allegiances jostled for purchase, creating a constant push and pull of competing desires and values. Within this context, criticism and ambivalence about the effects of cultural modernization was ubiquitous, a byproduct not only of the heterogeneity within mass culture itself, but also of the tension-filled incorporation of culture into the market. By analyzing Argentine mass culture in this light, my dissertation challenges monolithic understandings of mass culture that ignore how it exposed and grappled with the tensions in its own premises. The cultural dynamic of the period collapsed the categories of culture, consumer good, and entertainment and blurred the limits between production and consumption, often provoking dismay from creators, cultural critics, nationalists, and educators, frequently voiced from within mass culture itself. -
