Smith 2 To my mother, who generated my fascination for all things historical 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Jon Sensbach and Jessica Harland-Jacobs for their patience and edification throughout the entire writing process. I would also like to thank Ida Altman, Jack Davis, and Richmond Brown for holding my feet to the path and making me a better historian. I owe a special debt to Jim Cusack, John Nemmers, and the rest of the staff at the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History and Special Collections at the University of Florida for introducing me to this topic and allowing me the freedom to haunt their facilities and guide me through so many stages of my research. I would be sorely remiss if I did not thank Steve Noll for his efforts in promoting the University of Florida’s history honors program, Phi Alpha Theta; without which I may never have met Jim Cusick. Most recently I have been humbled by the outpouring of appreciation and friendship from the wonderful people of St. Augustine, Florida, particularly the National Association of Colonial Dames, the ladies of the Women’s Exchange, and my colleagues at the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum and the First America Foundation, who have all become cherished advocates of this project.

December 28, 2015 i ©2015 by Jeffrey Michael Zimmerman All Rights Reserved ii “ALL THE NATIONS TO THE SUN SETTING” GEORGE CROGHAN, EXTENDING THE LIMITS OF EMPIRE IN BRITISH NORTH AMERICA Jeffrey Michael Zimmerman, MBA Chair: Ronald M. Johnson, PhD ABSTRACT George Croghan was a mid-eighteenth-century British Indian agent. Born in Ireland, he came to America and settled in Pennsylvania in 1741. As an Ohio Valley fur trader he pushed far enough west to invite destruction of his Great Miami River depot by New France in 1752. Over time he befriended Shawnee, Ohio Huron and Miami Indians. Indian Department Superintendent Sir William Johnson rewarded his countryman’s effectiveness by appointing him western deputy. Britain’s victory in the French and Indian War added Illinois to Croghan’s responsibilities. General Lord Jeffrey Amherst led Britain’s war efforts; he was replaced by General Thomas Gage, under whom Croghan had served at Braddock’s Defeat. Pontiac’s War ensued; Gage and Johnson relied on Croghan, who knew the Ottawa leader, to end it. However, Croghan’s focus became blurred by land speculation. Several western land schemes crafted by Croghan and Philadelphia financier Samuel Wharton either failed or were cut short by the American Revolution.

J$urde£ Oglcmdar* JWe/iJwrps Twisden More Jlfortzri Hanlumi Mbstyn MM . Ufa*wn nvowti Jhmer PREFACE. Transmitting to posterity the acts of those who have deserved well of their country, has in all ages been countenanced by persons of public spirit and learning, and I should not presume to take this liberty were I conscious of advancing any particular incon= sistent with the utmost truth and impartiality. Our nobles, whatever imperfections some of their members have displayed, have gained universal applause among all ranks of people for their gracious affability, candor and humanity. Even their enemies have ad= mired those public and private virtues which distin= guished them in learning and solid judgment; and what may seem paradoxical to many, they have generally stood for the maintenance of an equal balance between the prerogative of the crown and the legal rights of the people; and how many have suffered on that account our histories show. n? JOHNSON. General Sir William Johnson, the eldest son of Christopher Johnson, Esq., of Warrenstown, by his wife Anne, a sister of Admiral Sir Peter Warren, was born in Ireland about 1715. Owing to what the General termed " a family dispute as to my marriage " he went to the American colonies where he immediately took over the management of the estates of his uncle, Sir Peter Warren, in the valley of the Mohawk. Here he first established himself upon a tract of land on the south side of the Mohawk River and about twenty miles west of the City of Schenectady, which he named Warrenburgh.
