Les six œuvres, dans l’ensemble, fournissent au lecteur et au critique une vaste palette de références et d’occasions d’approfondissement : en observant leur morphologie, en évaluant leur potentiel expressif, on parvient à comprendre que les romans sont structurés comme un réseau de rapports entre les faits et les personnes. Les auteurs gèrent le matériel narratif avec habilité audacieuse, en expérimentant et innovant les modèles : le travail de recherche est organisé en évaluant aussi bien la persistance des ressemblances que l’évolution diachronique des différences du corpus. Le collectif a une haute conception du rôle social de la littérature ; l’opération culturelle qu’il mène vise ouvertement à revendiquer la valeur politique de la pratique littéraire. Nous explorons ainsi l’importance accordée à l’idée de communauté et à la transmission du savoir au sein de celle-ci. De plus, nous cherchons à vérifier la cohérence entre la substance des textes et les propositions de réflexion dont les auteurs voudraient se faire promoteurs auprès de la communauté de leurs lecteurs. Dans l’intention de saisir les tendances de l’écriture des Wu Ming, nous utilisons une méthodologie permettant de donner le jour à une étude confrontée à des facettes différentes des romans, afin d’en saisir la richesse. Ainsi nous conduisons notre étude à plusieurs niveaux. Elle est d’abord consacrée à la morphologie des textes, aux éléments de la structure narrative ; ensuite, elle est approfondie par l’analyse de correspondances significatives avec d’autres œuvres ; elle est enfin orientée à saisir la signification spécifique des romans en relation avec les exigences et les caractéristiques du milieu culturel où ils sont produits. Mots-clés Wu Ming, Littérature italienne contemporaine, Roman historique, Politique de la littérature 1 Thesis title In front of an open, mixed, incomplete world Texts end contexts in Wu Ming’s novels Abstract This research focuses on collective novels by the group of writers known originally as Luther Blissett and afterward as Wu Ming: these literary works constitute a compact corpus for what concerns both formal features and messages transmitted by the plots. The six novels, as a whole, expressively show to readers and critics many references and provide cause for reflection: observing their morphology and considering their expressive potential, it is possible to understand that the literary works are structured as a network of relationships between events and people. The authors handle their narrative material with audacious ability, by experimenting and innovating models: this research is structured to consider both the persistence of resemblances and the diachronic evolution of differences. Wu Ming’s idea of the social role of literature is substantial. The group’s cultural activity openly aims at claiming political value of literature. Indeed, this thesis investigates the importance in the novels of communities and of knowledge spread within them. Furthermore, this research would verify the coherence between the substance of the texts and how the writers encourage their audience to reflect upon. Aiming at gathering Wu Ming’s writing tendencies, this thesis employs a method which is key to highlighting their novels’ different facets, in order to understand their rich meanings. Therefore, this investigation is structured on separate but complimentary levels. First, it focuses on morphology of the texts and elements of narrative structure; following that, it is enriched by the comparison to significant resemblances of other literary works; lastly, it seeks to reach the specific meaning of the novels in relation to the necessities and features of the cultural milieu they are produced in. Of the aspects of the speech that were damaging to Mao, the most troubling was no doubt Khrushchev’s attack on the “cult of personality” (7), not only in Stalin’s example, but in principle, as a “perversion” of Marxism. As Alain Badiou has remarked, the cult of personality was something of an “invariant feature of communist states and parties,” one that was brought to a point of “paroxysm” in China’s Cultural Revolution (505). It should hence not surprise us that Mao responded in 1958 with a defense of the axiom as properly communist. In delineating “correct” and “incorrect” kinds of personality cult, Mao insisted: “The ques- tion at issue is not whether or not there should be a cult of the indi- vidual, but rather whether or not the individual concerned represents the truth. If he does, then he should be revered” (99–100). Not unex- pectedly, Marx, Engels, Lenin, and “the correct side of Stalin” are Mao’s given examples of leaders that should be “revere[d] for ever” (38). Marx himself, however, was somewhat hostile to such practice, a point Khrushchev sought to stress in quoting from Marx’s November 1877 letter to Wilhelm Blos: “From my antipathy to any cult of the individ - ual, I never made public during the existence of the International the numerous addresses from various countries which recognized my merits and which annoyed me.

ExEcuTivE SuMMARy The Mohawk Valley Battlefield Ethnography Project was designed to document the relationships between contemporary Indian peoples and the events that occurred in central New York during the mid to late eighteenth century. The particular focus was Fort Stanwix, located near the Oneida Carry, which linked the Mohawk and St. Lawrence Rivers via Wood Creek, and the Oriskany Battlefield. Because of its strategic location, Fort Stanwix was the site of several critical treaties between the British and the Iroquois and, following the American Revolution, between the latter and the United States. This region was the homeland of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy whose neutrality or military support was desired by both the British and the rebels during the Revolution. The Battle of Oriskany, 6 August 1777, occurred as the Tryon County militia, aided by Oneida warriors, was marching to relieve the British siege of Ft.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ---------------------------- Lara Fiorani 2 ABSTRACT This thesis reviews Roberto Calasso’s Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia (1988) and demonstrates that thematic and formal elements of this text allow us to to cast a post- modern and poststructuralist light on his theorization of ‘absolute literature’ – a declaration of faith in the power of literature which may appear to clash with the late twentieth century postmodern and poststructuralist climate responsible for concepts such as la mort de l’auteur. The importance of these findings lies in their going against Calasso’s claim that he never needed to use the word ‘postmodern’ and his complete silence on contemporary literary criticism, as well as on most contemporary authors. Calasso’s self-representation (interviews, criticism and the themes of the part-fictional work-in-progress) acknowledges as influences ancient Greek authors, both canonical and marginal; French décadence; the finis Austriae; Marxism; Nietzsche; Hindu mythology and Aby Warburg. These influences are certainly at work in Le nozze, however they may be employed to subvert Calasso’s self-presentation. I have explored in detail the representations of literature emerging from Le nozze, and shown that they allow the identification in Calasso’s texts of elements confirming his fascination with poststructuralism, in particular with the thought of Jacques Derrida, despite the complete silence on this philosopher throughout Calasso’s work.

Victoria University of Wellington 2015 Abstract The twenty-first century has witnessed the exacerbation of ecological issues that began to manifest themselves in the mid-twentieth century. It has become increasingly clear that the current environmental crisis poses an unprecedented existential threat to civilization as well as to Homo sapiens itself. Whereas the physical and social sciences have been defining the now inevitable transition to a different (and more inhospitable) Earth, the humanities have yet to assert their role as a transformative force within the context of global environmental change. Turning abstract issues into narrative form, literary writing can increase awareness of environmental issues as well as have a deep emotive influence on its readership. To showcase this type of writing as well as the methodological frameworks that best highlights the social and ethical relevance of such texts alongside their literary value, I have selected the following twenty-first century Italian literary works: Roberto Saviano’s Gomorra, Kai Zen’s Delta blues, Wu Ming’s Previsioni del tempo, Simona Vinci’s Rovina, Giancarlo di Cataldo’s Fuoco!, Laura Pugno’s Sirene, and Alessandra Montrucchio’s E poi la sete, all published between 2006 and 2011. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate how these works offer an invaluable opportunity to communicate meaningfully and accessibly the discomforting truths of global environmental change, including ecomafia, waste trafficking, illegal building, arson, ozone depletion, global warming and the dysfunctional relationship between humanity and the biosphere.
