INTRODUCTION TO FIRST VOLUME This volume deals more with events than with persons, and in- dividuals have only been mentioned in so far as they have been identified with the early development period, or have held positions of more or less public prominence. The plan pursued in some other such productions of compiling an illustrated biographical record of subscribers, has not in any sense been followed in this instance and the selection of the material has rested entirely with the author. As far as Brantford is concerned, its growth, while never of the boom order, has always been steady. The progress which has been achieved must be mainly attributed to the fortuitous circumstance that from the earliest days the municipality has always contained residents possessed of enterprise and vision. The inauguration of the Grand River Navigation Co., was one of the first manifestations in this regard, followed by the reaching after railways, and still later by the attracting of indus- tries. When there is added to these things the fact that Brantfordites have always had supreme confidence in the future of the community, and have ever most heartily co-operated in anything tending to this end, the explanation is readily found as to why the little settlement located on Indian land in 1830, should to-day be a thriving city of well over 30,000 people, the fourth industrial city of all Canada in the matter of manu- factured exports, the hub of many railroad and radial lines, a place of well kept homes, with not the slightest sign of any slum district within its entire borders, and possessed of municipally owned waterworks, a municipally owned street railway, and a municipally owned Hydro Elec- tric System, while electric power and light are supplied from Niagara and DeCew Falls and natural gas is also available. The frame structures of the earlier days have given place to miles upon miles of fine residential streets—mainly working men's homes—and to the splendid class of men engaged in the local industries and the absence of trade disputes, must also be attributed much of what we have become. As for the future, it is full of a promise commensurate with the past and nothing more than this need be said. Of the County it may also be claimed that there are few agricultural areas anywhere which can surpass the fine farms and the sterling qualities of their occupants. From the first arrival of Thayendanegea and his warriors of the Six Nations, to the successful completion of one of the greatest of modern inventions—the telephone—Brantford and Branty County possess much material of historic interest, which it has been the endeavor of this volume to preserve. In the matter of the life of Brant, the principal authority is the two volume history with reference to that Chief published by Stone in INTRODUCTION INDIAN HISTORHISTORY 15 1838, but many other sources of information have also been used in the compilation of the chapter devoted to that notable man. After lecturing at the Egyptian University in Cairo, he joined the editorial staff of the Man­ chester Guardian in 1930, and was Moscow Corre­ spondent for this paper from 1932-3. In the war of 1939-45 he served as an Intelligence officer in North Africa, Moz.ambique, Italy and France, being seconded to MI6, the wartime version of the Secret Service. He ended up in Paris as Liaison Officer with the French Securite Militaire, and was awarded the Legion of Hon0ur (Chevalier), the Croix de Guerre with Palm and the Medaille de la Reconnaissance Fran9aise. His career as a journalist included a spell' as Washington Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph from 1946-7, and Deputy Editorship from 1950-52. He was Editor of Punch from 1953-7 and Rector of Edinburgh University from 1967-8. He lives in Robertsbridge, Sussex. The property is bisected by Taylor Run, a stream that runs northwest to southeast. The focus of this documentary study is the Octagon House that stood on the property from 1856 to 1866. For its short existence, the Octagon House played a remarkable role in a turbulent time in Alexandria’s history. Built by Sarah W. Hall in 1856, the house’s octagonal design and cement construction were unusual in the area. After the death of her husband, Charles Hall, a prominent clergyman involved in the American Mission movement, Sarah Hall moved her three daughters from New York to join her eldest son Charles Stuart, who lived in the Alexandria area. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in the spring of 1861, the house’s location along Leesburg Pike and in the vicinity of several Union Army fortifications led to its use as a headquarters by several Union regiments and as a regimental hospital. During the Civil War, the Octagon House was associated with U.S. Brigadier General John Sedgwick (1813-1864) and nurse Amy Morris Bradley (1823-1904).

CAMERON FONDS Dates of creation 1866-1932 Extent 5 cm of textual records Biographical sketch Irving Heward Cameron, a Toronto physician, was born on 17 July 1855 to Chief Justice Sir Matthew Crooks Cameron and Charlotte Ross Wedd. Cameron attended Upper Canada College, Toronto. He then obtained an MB at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Medical School in 1874. Cameron practiced Medicine in Toronto and served as a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and as Chief Surgeon at Toronto General Hospital until his retirement in 1920. During the First World War Cameron served as a Surgeon in the Duchess of Connaught’s Canadian Red Cross Hospital in Kent, England. Cameron was elected President of the Canadian Medical Association in 1898, serving as a Councillor at the Toronto Academy of Medicine, and a member of the consulting staff at the Hospital for Sick Children. He was President of the Toronto University Alumni Association, and President as well as Senator of the Toronto Branch of the British Medical Association. He was also a member of the Société Internationale de Chirurgie, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He was founder and editor of the Canadian Journal of Medical Science and authored many articles. In 1900 Cameron received an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in London.
