Population and Household Estimates for Community Council Areas in

A Scottish Borders Insight produced by the Corporate Performance and Information R&I Team

Updated March 2021 The following tables show the current population estimates for all 70 community council areas in Scottish Borders. All community council areas were given a population and household update in the 2011 Census. There is also a large amount of information on everything from demographic identity, health and care, transport, household arrangements, occupation and car usage in the Census, which can be used for profiling any Community Council Area, however small. Additionally, community council areas containing settlements of 500 people or over can use Data Zone geography to receive more detailed and up-to-date demographic information about their area, such as the Small-area Mid-year Population Estimates (SAPE-MYEs) from National Records of , which are updated annually. Communities of under 500 people (which include many rural community councils in Scottish Borders) can receive the same information but on a “best-fit” basis, using the Data Zone which most closely matches their area. The quality of the fit between Data Zones and Council Areas varies enormously. Some community council areas can receive excellent and up to date information about their area. Others can receive the same information but need to include neighbouring communities or larger parts of the locality as well. Whether a good fit or a poor one, the quality and detail of the small-area information produced by Scottish Government Official statistics is very good, and still represents the unique social and demographic characteristics of the local area even if the actual population counts do not represent the exact size and shape of the community council area.
