Councillor W L Forrest Mrs J Wheadon (Committee Secretary). 4 members of the public. 1 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Mr I Gill, Mrs U Robinson and Mr B Weir. 2 MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 17 SEPTEMBER 2001 The Minutes, which had previously been circulated, were signed by the Chairman as a correct copy. 3 MATTERS ARISING 3,14(c) Basketball net on Gavinton village green - Mary Weir and the original sub-committee said that the net could be removed but what would happen to it had not been decided. 8(a) Bonfire night - there was to be a bonfire in the playing field. Thanks to all volunteers and Mr D Seed for providing a straw bale. 4 LOTHIAN AND BORDERS POLICE WPC Rachael Mackey and WPC Karen Parker attended to hear our concerns regarding speeding through Gavinton. In July there had been a speeding check in the village and one person had been caught Due to pressure on resources manpower was concentrated on accident or crash hotspots to ascertain why these occurred and as no accidents had been reported, Gavinton was not considered a problem. It was suggested that any concerns should be sent to the Police Traffic Department at Hawick, including the use of Main Street as a short cut to Duns industrial estate, especially early in the morning, and also the large number of children in the village.

  • Clan Home Gathering 2018
CLAN HOME GATHERING AUGUST 2018 The Clan Home Association is pleased to announce that the next Clan Gathering will take place in Berwickshire around the weekend of 11th-12th August 2018. The dates selected mean that Clan members, family and friends, can, if they wish, join in the activities of the Coldstream Civic Week before the Gathering and go on to the Edinburgh Festival in the week following. Figure 1 - Wedderburn Castle The organisers of the Coldstream Civic Week are very excited at the prospect of many Homes, Humes and others associated with the Clan combining with them to celebrate their Civic Week. 1 Figure 2 - Duns Castle The plan is to base the Gathering at the magnificent Wedderburn Castle, as in 2013, but also, on the assumption the numbers will justify, to use the wonderful facilities at the neighbouring Duns Castle. Given that the organisers propose an even more ambitious programme than in 2013, the aim is to make use of the next fifteen months to build interest in the events so that a record number attend the 2018 Gathering. This would of course require more facilities to be available for use by attendees. Those who would like to stay at Wedderburn Castle or Duns Castle are invited to contact the Clan Association to register an interest. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. At present the CHA expects Wedderburn to be rented for three nights, starting 10th August, and Duns for six nights, starting from the evening of Tuesday 7th August. 2 The Association plans are still being developed, but the current thinking is that the Gathering will start formally on Wednesday 8th August with a day given over to Genealogical matters.

MEDIEVAL BERWICK Berwick has been a garrison town since the Middle Ages because of its strategic position on the Anglo-Scottish Border. Through the centuries, the town has hosted soldiers of many nationalities. In 1298, King Edward I installed a garrison of 60 men at arms and 1,000 foot soldiers, including some Gascon mercenaries. A petition sent to King Edward II on 20th April 1317 relates to the arrival of an Irish soldier of fortune in the town: “The mayor, bailiffs and commons of Berwick greet the King and inform him that John le Iirois [“the Irishman”] came to Berwick on the Monday before mid- Lent [March 7th] and sought leave of the Keeper to go to western parts to harass the enemy, and did so, and then returned to Berwick on April 12 with 38 men at arms and 54 hobelars (light cavalryman), well equipped, and John and his men are staying in defence of the town up to the date of this letter and still remain.” (Ancient Petitions) Apparently the Irishman had complained that his mercenary men-at-arms all of whom were: “suitably mounted and armed with aketon (a padded quilted jacket), hauberk (a mail shirt) and bascinet (open-faced light helmet)”, were not receiving appropriate pay of 12d a day but were being treated as ordinary hobelars, who were paid only 6d. The petition asks: “May the King recompense John as one who has deserved a reward, having grieved the enemy to the utmost of his power.” After the final capture of Berwick in 1482, Edward IV appointed the Earl of Northumberland Warden of the East March and Keeper of the Town and Castle of Berwick.
