February 2017 Catalogue Issue 10 Prices valid until Wednesday 29 March 2017 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 Cover photo taken from Hyperion CDA68155 [email protected] ‘Suites for Solo Cello’ (Natalie Clein). 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, Pianists seem to be making a particularly strong showing this month, with brand new recordings being released from several ‘big names’. For DG, Maurizio Pollini performs the late works of Chopin and Rafal Blechacz offers us a recital of works by Bach, including the Italian Concerto and two of the keyboard partitas. Warner/Erato also have two for us: David Fray performs Chopin (including some overlap with Pollini, making for an interesting comparison) and Piotr Anderszewski has chosen Mozart and Schumann. Alongside Philip Glass from Vikingur Olafsson (DG), Rachmaninov from Vanessa Benelli Mosell (Decca), Schubert from Barry Douglas (Chandos) and Debussy/Hosokawa from Momo Kodama (ECM), it is a veritable feast for pianophiles! The London Haydn Quartet continue their Haydn cycle in style for Hyperion, now reaching the six quartets of opp.54 & 55. All instalments so far have been released as 2 CDs for the price of 1 and it is great to see this continue. This new set has been picked as our Disc of the Month for February so, if you spend £50 or more on other items, the 2 CDs can be yours for just £8.95 - see below for more information. 2017 sees not only the 150 anniversary of Toscanini’s birth but also the 60 anniversary of his death and the 80 anniversary of the founding of the NBC Symphony Orchestra, so we are sure to see plenty of commemorative issues appearing throughout the year. Sony/RCA have kicked off proceedings with a 20 CD set featuring what they consider to be his ‘Essential Recordings’. The set provides a good overview, covering recordings from 1929-1952 in a wide range of repertoire, including three complete operas (Otello, Falstaff and La Boheme). See p.5 for more details. New special offers this month feature the complete catalogues of CPO, CRD (now being produced by Wyastone - a very welcome return to the catalogue), Fuga Libera and Lawo Classics (a debut at Europadisc!). Our Sony ‘Classical Masters’ boxset promotion in December proved to be very popular, so we have come up with 120 more boxsets from Sony for you, this time featuring both modern and archive issues at great prices. There are also selected titles from Chandos, archive issues from ICA Classics on CD and DVD plus high-quality DVDs and Blu-rays from C Major Entertainment. Finally, just to warn you that unfortunately we are going to have to increase our UK postage prices from 1 March 2017. We try to avoid doing this too frequently, but with Royal Mail costs increasing at a significant rate every year, it is an area we have to address from time to time. More information will be provided in the March issue. Thanks above all to Haydn himself, there was a near-insatiable demand for string quartets in the lucrative amateur domestic market. Following the international success of the Op 33 quartets, published in 1782, the Viennese firm of Artaria lost no time commissioning another set of six quartets. Haydn accepted, but only embarked on the new quartets, Op 50, in 1787, after composing six symphonies for Paris (Nos 82–87) and The Seven Last Words for distant Cádiz. By now he was on something of a quartet roll, producing the six works published as Opp 54 and 55 in 1788 and another set of six, Op 64, in 1790—the last music he composed before his first London sojourn. 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Overtures, Chopin Preludes and Late Works opp.59-64 Intermezzi Pollini Filarmonica della £12.50 Scala, Chailly DG 9479 6127 £11.50 available at £11.50 until 24/2 Decca 483 1148 Aida Garifullina Bach, JS Debut album from the Italian Concerto, Russian soprano - Partitas 1 & 3, Gounod, Delibes, 4 Duets etc Tchaikovsky etc Blechacz £11.50 £11.50 Decca 478 8305 DG 479 5534 due 10/2 DG 9479 6918 Glass Piano Works available at £11.50 until 24/2 Olafsson £12.50 DG 479 7158 Max Richter Three Worlds: Music from Woolf Works available at £11.50 until 24/2 Richter etc £12.50 Decca 481 4711 New Era Works for clarinet and orchestra by Stamitz, Danzi and Mozart Ottensamer £11.50 Decca 481 4393 Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no.2, Corelli Variations due 24/2 Mosell;LPO;Karabits £11.50 DG 479 6979 Rachmaninov Piano Trios due 24/2 Kremer;Dirvanauskaite;Kremer £11.50 Karajan Fournier Bumbry The Sacred & The Edition The Art of… Choral Recordings £68.95 £34.95 £54.95 DG 479 6909 (25CD) DG 482 7626 (8CD) DG 479 7060 (29CD) available at £61.95 inc bonus DVD due 24/2 until 24/2 29 CD limited edition featuring the complete Pierre Fournier’s elegant and aristocratic Marking the 80th birthday of Grace Bumbry, sacred and choral recordings that Herbert playing, his superb control of the bow and his this boxset celebrates her magnificent career von Karajan made throughout his illustrious supple, consistently beautiful tone impressed across opera, oratorio, lieder and soul in a recording career on Deutsche Grammophon. a whole generation of cellists and music handsome collection of 8 CDs plus a DVD of her Contains original jacket art (front and back) lovers all over the world.
