APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP

I am pleased that you are interested in joining the Club. Attached is an application form. Please complete it and send all pages to me, with the appropriate payment if paying by cheque. Notice of each application must be posted in the Clubhouse for seven days before acceptance. Assuming there are no objections, I will then send you your membership card, sailing programme, etc. To give both of us an opportunity to put a face to a name, I am at the Club on some Sundays and most Thursday evenings (work and sailing event permitting) and will be happy to explain any aspects of membership you may be unsure of. You may, however, have to wait until I come off the water. If I am not there, ask to be introduced to another committee member or someone else who can help. We are a friendly club and are keen to encourage potential new members. Sailing is permitted each day from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10.00 a.m., until 8.00 p.m., or until half an hour before sunset, whichever is the earlier. Safety cover is provided until 6.00 p.m.at weekends by members sharing the duty of manning the rescue boats on a rota basis. Each member is expected to do two such duty days a year. Alternatively, members may opt for duties in the galley, which is open on Sundays. Helms are also required to complete a minimum of 2 Race Officer Duties a year at a weekend. A briefing will be provided to explain what is required in each case. After 6.00 p.m. at weekends, and on the three weekdays on which sailing is permitted, members must arrange their own safety cover. Absolutely no sailing is allowed without safety cover, i.e. two competent persons in a power boat and dedicated to safety duties. From April to end of September the Club also runs racing on a Thursday evening which is open to all – a Bronze, Silver, Gold fleet system is run. If you take part in this, you will also be expected to complete a duty (either safety boat or Race Officer) for each of the 3 mini-series. Copies of the Club’s rules are available for inspection in the clubhouse and personal copies are emailed to all members. Boats must fulfil the following criteria: monohull; Portsmouth yardstick – although the committee can and does make exceptions: maximum length 5.05 metres (16’ 6”); total mast height, including burgee, 7 metres (23’) above water level; maximum weight 182kg (400 lbs). There are Club boats available for hire by the day or half day at reasonable rates. The sailing permit issued by the Club will allow trailing and car topping. A space or separate trailer in the dinghy park involves additional charges. If you have a medical condition it is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit enough to be out on the water, and to inform the duty OOD each time you venture out if assistance may be required or if you feel that the club should be made aware. As well as its website, the Club has a Google Groups forum and a facebook page, which enables members to get the latest news, anecdotes and gossip – as well as the chance to contribute to discussions on topical sailing issues. Make sure you register for this useful and enjoyable facility. The latest club newsletter contains the information on how to join. I look forward to receiving your application and to welcoming you into the Club. If there is anything you require help or advice about please get in touch, the club has a wealth of knowledge within it’s membership - if I can’t answer your query I will be able to find someone who can.

Yours sincerely Jo Mahy Joanne Mahy - Honorary Membership Secretary
