    CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS St MARY’S CHURCH FROME St QUINTIN INTRODUCTION Transcripts of the memorial stones in the church and churchyard of St. Mary’s Church, Frome St. Quintin were first made in 1986 by members of the Frome Valley History Society, led by Wendy Wright of Holywell House, Holywell.. The work was revised in 2009 by Graham and Jennifer Browne of Frome Farm House, Frome St. Quintin. The transcripts have been made to the best of our ability, bearing in mind the effects of weathering over sometimes quite a long period of time, and we believe them to be a true record of the material at the time of reading. In reading the following transcripts, the slashes represent the end of the line on the tombstone or memorial to guide the readers in finding the actual words for themselves. Where there is doubt about the actual wording due to erosion of the materials, either question marks or dashes will be found. The numbers on the plan reflect those of the typescript records. For further details of the men whose names appear on the two war memorials in the church, refer to the ‘Book of Remembrance’. The property fronts onto the road within the settlement of Buckland Newton and is within its Conservation Area. Buckland Newton is an historic settlement which has 27 Listed Buildings of which 8 of these Listings include thatched roofs which make a very important contribution to the history and character of Buckland Newton which is itself set within attractive countryside. 1.2. Elkins is a building which dates from the 17th Century and was once used as an Inn. It has whitewashed walls with a hipped thatch roof.     BLANDFORD'S CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD WAR TWO compiled by M.J. Le Bas 2020 7.12 BLANDFORD PREPARES FOR WAR With war looming in 1939, Blandford Camp was reactivated a s a t r a i n i n g c e n t r e f o r reservists called up, and for new r e c r u i t s s e e n here. Many new huts were built for accommodation, as most of the huts from WW1 had long since been demolished or sold on. Some became the huts for the Blandford Scouts in Eagle House Gardens. INVASION? In 1940, Blandford received prominence when Prime Minister Churchill declared Blandford must become 'a strategic tank island to be defended at all costs'. This was in response to the threat of German invasion after the Fall of France in May. The German plan, one of many, was to land in August 1940 on the Dorset Coast “Operation Sealion”, and strike northward rapidly to the Bristol Channel, thereby capturing Blandford featured strongly in the German at a stroke the ports of Devon and plans. It lay on one of three routes the German Cornwall and enabling the landing Army would have taken, the others being of German forces unopposed. Maiden Newton and Fordingbridge, with Blandford and the crossing of the River Stour at it's bridge, being the most advantageous route. LOCATION ? . In order to confuse the invaders, town signs were ordered to be removed, here in particular the word BLANDFORD that was prominently displayed on street and sewer drain covers, and on the charity boards in the Parish Church.

    STOURS PARISH COUNCIL Minutes of East Stour Annual Parish Meeting held at 7.30pm on Thursday 30th May 2019 in East Stour Village Hall PRESENT: Cllrs Mrs B Edwards (Chairman), R McConnell, R Robson and Mrs J Uden. Also the Clerk, Mrs M Cox, Dorset Councillors Val Pothecary and Belinda Ridout, Mrs T Bagnall, (Tree Warden), G Gilding and 5 members of the public. The Chairman welcomed our new Dorset Councillors Val Pothecary and Belinda Ridout (Gillingham ward) and everyone present. 1. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN Cllr Mrs B Edwards was elected as Chairman and Proposed by Cllr McConnell, seconded by Cllr R Robson and agreed by all. Elected unopposed. 2. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE. – Cllrs P Gould (Chairman Stours Parish Council), Mrs L Bennett and R Haddon, DCCllr D Walsh, Mr M Hibbert (RoWLO), Mrs A Morphew, Mr & Mrs T Jones. Peter Caulfield sent his apologies and has resigned from the Council as he is unable to make the meetings in time on a Thursday also for personal reasons. There is a now a vacancy for the East Stour ward. 3. MINUTES of the meeting of 22nd November 2018 (previously circulated). Cllr McConnell said that the grid reference regarding the positioning of the bench is incorrect, the gr quoted is miles away. The reference quoted is what is written in Hannah’s will. The minutes were agreed to be a correct record and duly signed. Cllr McConnell said he will inform us of the correct grid reference. 4. MATTERS ARISING. Hannah O’Sullivan’s legacy. Hannah left money for the council to purchase a seat especially for dog walkers, along Witch Lane at a specific place.

It currently reads ‘Oatley’ and should read ‘Oatway’. “(b) I also raised the issue of overcrowding on the 31 and X53 bus services during the summer. Mark [First] stated that whilst he was aware of occasional problems with the 10am service, drivers do have a facility to request a stand-by bus and driver to assist, in the event of overcrowding.” 2.
