5 PROGRAMS

PREPARATORY DIVISION The Preparatory Division (Prep) is a stepping stone into training, for young dancers ages 3-7. Students' gross motor skills are engaged through creative and expressive exercise, while a focus on coordination, fexibility, and ballet etiquette prepares them for the next level of study. Our faculty for the Preparatory Division is dedicated to focusing on the needs of our youngest dancers, while at the same time preparing them for their next steps in dance. Creative Movement (age 3-turning-4 and age 4-turning-5) focuses on gross motor skills through creative and expressive exercise, and building an appreciation for dance and proper studio behavior. Pre-Ballet (age 5-turning-6 and age 6-turning-7) focuses on the foundation of proper posture and coordination, and movement, and age-appropriate stretching and strengthening.

JUNIOR DIVISION The Junior Division (JD) helps students ages 7-12 build the strength and understanding necessary for long-term success as both a dancer and well-rounded individual. Through ballet classes and age-appropriate music, modern, and repertoire lessons, a strong technical foundation is established. Portland School of Ballet follows a Vaganova-based curriculum; Vaganova is the Russian training system which creates a connected sense of movement and an expressive range. Dancers in the JD develop an understanding of correct posture and placement, musicality, coordination, and artistry. Each level will take weekly classes, alongside Music & Movement classes (JD1/JD2) or Modern (JD3/JD4), and will have Victorian Nutcracker rehearsals built into their schedule.

JD-dancers receive a 10% discount on the Junior Intensive (summer) starting in 2022.

SENIOR DIVISION The Senior Division (SD) provides strong technical and artistic training for teens. Through a curriculum of ballet, pointe/men's classes, modern, jazz, and repertoire, students are challenged in an environment that allows for maximum achievement. This division is also ideal for students who are planning to continue dance training in college, or who are involved in (musical) theater, ice skating, or dance team, and are looking to increase their strength, musicality, and mobility. Our goal for Senior Division students is to help them develop as individuals and artists.

SD-dancers: - have automatic acceptance (no audition required) to the Portland Ballet Summer Intensive and receive a 10% discount on the program starting in 2022. - take master classes with guest instructors, along with seminars on college dance programs and injury prevention. - receive a free ticket to Portland Ballet’s professional company productions.

6 PRE-PROFESSIONAL DIVISION The Pre-Professional Division (PPD) is a comprehensive program for middle/high school students, comprised of select dancers from Portland School of Ballet's advanced levels, and dancers chosen from our annual audition. Students accepted into the program are dedicated individuals looking to pursue a career in ballet, either by joining a professional company after graduation or continuing their studies in college with a Degree in Ballet. The PPD offers a demanding curriculum that requires 100 percent commitment. Sabir Yapparov is the Director of the Pre-Professional Division.

PPD-dancers: - have automatic acceptance (no audition required) to the Portland Ballet Summer Intensive and receive a 10% discount on the program starting in 2022. - take master classes with guest instructors, along with seminars such as audition preparation and injury prevention. - receive a free ticket to Portland Ballet’s professional company productions

OPEN CLASS PROGRAM Portland School of Ballet is proud to offer ballet education to students of all ages through Open Classes. Our teen and adult offerings range from classes for those students with little or no experience in classical ballet, to lessons for advanced students who are looking for a faster pace and more diffculty.

SEASON AND PERFORMANCES The schedule for the 2021/2022 school year will be dependent on COVID-guidelines and is subject to change.

In addition to their time in the studios, dancers in the Junior Division, Senior Division, and Pre-Professional Division have various stage opportunities throughout the year: They are part of Portland Ballet's A Victorian Nutcracker, participate in a production called the Building Series (a lecture-demonstration performance to educate the public about classical ballets) in early Spring, and perform in Portland School of Ballet's Year End Showcase. These divisions may also get the opportunity to participate in outreach events or collaborative art performances, such as Kennebunk's Annual May Day Festival or First Friday Art Walk shows. On occasion, Portland School of Ballet students may be asked to perform with the professional company as needed. These opportunities are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of Portland Ballet’s Artistic Director.

In early February, the Junior Division, Senior Division, and Pre-Professional Division participate in class exams, where they showcase their classwork to a panel of faculty and the School Director. JD- and SD-students will receive level placement only at the end of the school year, however, the exam plays a large part in how placement is determined. Although dancers in PPD do not have to attend the annual audition for the program, their exams will help determine their continuation or divisional change.
