2017 Spring Concert Info Packet 2017 SPRING CONCERT INFO PACKET The Spring Concert is an annual production by Hyde Park School of Dance, and every class from Creative Movement all the way up through our highest levels participate. HPSD is committed to providing an annual free performance opportunity for all of our students, and we invite all of our dancers to take part in this production. Please read carefully the entire contents of this packet. You will be expected to know all of the information contained herein. If you have any questions, please contact the office as soon as possible. The Basics HPSD’s 2017 Spring Concert will be held on Sunday, May 21 at the Museum of Science & Industry. The concert consists of three acts, and each act is treated as its own separate and complete performance. All HPSD students may participate in the Spring Concert. There will be no workshop fees associated with this performance, and costumes will be provided for dancer use free of charge. While costume use and participation are free, all costumes will remain the property of HPSD, and anyone wishing to watch the performance will be expected to purchase a ticket. Students will learn their Spring Concert dances in class, and the only outside rehearsal required to participate is a special dress rehearsal for dancers in Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet, and Boys’ Dance (see page 8 for details) on Saturday, May 20. All you have to do to secure your dancer’s place in the program is confirm that your dancer will be participating at www.hydeparkdance.org/springconcert. Simply complete the brief form at hydeparkdance.org/springconcert April 29 – May 19 Dress rehearsals for dancers in Ballet I-VI, Modern, Boys Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop Please note: dress rehearsals will take place during these dates in our regularly scheduled classes. It is very important that you make every effort to ensure your dancer is in attendance at all of his or her classes during dress rehearsal time. If your dancer must be absent, please contact the office prior to the missed class(es) to let us know. May 15 Last day for volunteers to pick up their comp tickets from the office Learn more about volunteering at hydeparkdance.org/volunteer. Clothing, grooming, and the physical appearance of the dressed body contribute to self image in both professional and recreational settings. Attending belly dance classes is a popular leisure activity among American women, and for many, dress accouterments are a significant part of the class experience. Dressing of the self for recreational events gives individuals the opportunity to express alternate aspects of the self not typically evident in other social settings and provides an opportunity for female socialization. The appearance of vendors selling specialized dancewear for classes, seminars, and workshops suggests that dress plays a significant role for students at all levels of belly dance activity, not just among those who perform professionally. This study examines the types of dress worn for belly dance classes and the motivations for dress choices made by students learning to belly dance from professional instructors in dance classes, seminars, and workshops. The study will further investigate how dress contributes to the expression of identity in the belly dance class context. The methods used for this study are participant observation at locations and events where belly dance classes, workshops, and seminars are held as well as half-hour interviews with students attending those events.
