Product Stewardship Summary September 2008

CaF2

Chemical Name: Calcium fluoride Chemical Category (if applicable): Halide Synonyms: Calcium difluoride; Fluorspar; Natural ; Acid - spar CAS Number: 7789-75-5 CAS Name: Calcium fluoride EC (EINECS) Number: 232-188-7 Other identifier (Please specify): GPS0016 V1.0

• Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is the essential source of fluoride in production of and . CaF2(s) + H2SO4(l) → CaSO4(solid) + 2 HF(g) CaF2 is also used in metal hardening applications and in the production of high-purity fluorophosphate glass.

• CaF2, or fluorspar, is an abundant naturally-occurring mineral. Dust is likely to be created during mining or production processes using CaF2, but worker exposure can be controlled with the use of proper general mechanical ventilation and personal protective equipment. Workplace exposure limits for fluoride ion have been established for use in worksite safety programs. CaF2 dusts released to the atmosphere and deposited in soil or surface in the vicinity of mining or production sites have negligible impact on the environment. Please see the MSDS for additional information.

• CaF2 is a nonflammable solid that is stable under normal conditions.

• CaF2 is practically non-toxic to humans because of its insolubility and low ionization properties.

• Chronic exposure to CaF2 dusts may increase the risk of fluorosis, a condition causing pain and damage to bones and joints.

• The cancer risk for CaF2 is low.

• CaF2 is an abundant naturally occurring compound with negligible effect on the environment. CaF2 does not bioaccumulate, but under conditions where CaF2 is reduced to fluoride, bioaccumulation of fluoride causes mottling of teeth and skeletal fluorosis.
