PAUL SALAMUNOVICH DAY

WHERAS Maestro Paul Salamunovich is revered throughout the choral music world for his lifelong commitment to the choral art; and
WHEREAS, For 60 years he served as Director of Music at St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood before retiring in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Paul Salamunovich was Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from
1991 to 2 00 I and is now their Music Director Emeritus; and
WHEREAS, Paul Salamunovich is recognized as an expert on Gregorian chant and received a
Papal knighthood in the Order of St. Gregory the Great from Pope Paul VI in 1969; and
WHEREAS, Paul Salamunovich, as a master clinician, has conducted over 850 festivals and
workshops around the world; and
WHEREAS, Paul Salamunovich serves on the Advisory Board of the Angeles Chorale, which the Angeles Chorale will host a tribute to him on Saturday, April 16, 20 I I at Town and Gown on the campus of the University of Southern California:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does declare April 16, 20 II as PAUL SALAMUNOVICH DAY IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES and extends best wishes for a long, happy, and rewarding retirement.

RESOLUTION
TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES 20 I I Film Festival
WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles joins in celebration of the Turner Classic Movies 20 I I Film Festival Road to Hollywood event;
WHEREAS, As part of the buildup to the 20 I I edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is expanding its second annual Road to Hollywoodtourto I 0 cities nationwide; and
WHEREAS, The Road to Hollywoodtour features free screenings of classic films, along with Live appearances by such enduring stars as Ernest Borgnine,Angie Dickinson Tippi Hedren Shirley Jones, Jane Powell, Angela Lansbury, Burt Reynolds and Eva Marie Saint; and
WHEREAS, TCM host Robert Osborne and weekend daytime host Ben Mankiewicz will appear in five cities each to introduce the screenings; and
WHEREAS, the four-day festival will provide movie fans a rare opportunity to experience some of cinema's greatest works as they were meant to be seen - on the big screen and in the city that made the magic happen; and
WHEREAS, The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which has a Longstanding role in movie history and was the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony, will once again serve as the official hotel for the festival as well as home to Club TCM, a central gathering point for attendees; and
WHEREAS, Turner Classic Movies is a Peabody Award-winning network that presents great films, uncut and commercial-free, from the Largest film Libraries in the world:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby recognize Turner Classic Movies for their commitment to preserving Hollywood's classic film Legacy. With best wishes for continued success.

RESOLUTION
KENNETH R. HUGHLEY
WHEREAS, Kenneth R. Hughley has served the City Attorney, Elected Officials, City departments, and residents of the City of Los Angeles with dedication and distinction since 1998; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth R. Hughley was born and raised in Tennessee. After graduating high school, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; and
WHEREAS, Hughley joined a pilot training program, completed fighter gunnery school and was married in 1954. He then earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Colorado; and
WHEREAS, Hughley flew in Vietnam from 1965 to July 1967, when he was shot down over North Vietnam, both he and his 'back-seater' on the two-man F4 Phantom II fighter plane were captured; and
WHEREAS, Hughley was transferred between four prisons over six years. He spent 14 months in a one-man cell and five months in complete isolation;
WHEREAS, "This was his silver lining"- said Hughley, "the prisoners tapped against the walls in code, sending each other messages, it was all you had to hang onto. These guys were still alive; they could communicate enough to establish a chain of command. We were still militaty people: still had discipline'; and
WHEREAS, after 3 %years, Hughley was able to write to his wife; it was the first time she could confirm he was still alive; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, Hughley retired as a colonel, with numerous decorations, including two Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars and four Purple Hearts. Hughley has had more combat missions than anyone before or since; and
WHEREAS, Hughley was first accepted to law school 30 years ago but chose instead to continue his Air Force career; and
WHEREAS, Hughley retired in 1979, only to start a new career at Hughes Aircraft Company; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, while working full-time as a manager of the Hughes Space and Missile Division, Hughley began taking classes at University of West Los Angeles School of Law; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, Hughley retired from Hughes to concentrate on his new passion, "law"; and
WHEREAS, just before his 65th birthday, Hughley found out he passed the bar. A few days later he graduated. Twice-retired, Hughley began a new career and a private practice; and
WHEREAS, Hughley began working at the City Attorney's Office in San Pedro to get trial and criminal law experience and never left; and
WHEREAS, Hughley is acknowledged as a professional, exhibiting an inherent diplomatic ability to work closely with all, and is revered and admired by his colleagues for his superior work ethic, unassuming nature and camaraderie; and,
Recyclab;'e and made from recycled waste. @ WHEREAS, the City Council, Mayor, City Attorney and all City departments and his fellow employees applaud and commend Kenneth R. Hughley for his phenomenal accomplishments:
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, by adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby extend their highest regard and heartfelt gratitude to Kenneth R. Hughley for his distinguished service to the City of Los Angeles, and express to him and his family their best wishes for happiness and good health for many years to come.

JOE MANTEGNA
WHEREAS, Joe Mantegna has received a star on the World Famous Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, April29, 20 I I; and
WHEREAS, Chicago native Joe Mantegna has a strong background in both theater and film. After making his Broadway debut in Stephen Schwartz's musical of Studs Terkel's Working, Mantegna was awarded the Tony and Joseph Jefferson Award for his acclaimed performance as cynical real-estate agent Richard Roma in David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross; and
WHEREAS, Closely associated with Mamet's work, Mantegna starred in the theatrical premiere of A Life in the Theater; The Disappearance of the Jews at the Goodman Theater, and in the Broadway production of Speed the Plow. In addition, Mantegna directed a critically acclaimed stage production of Mamet's Lakeboat; starring Ed O'Neil and George Wendt, in a successful Los Angeles theatrical run; and
WHEREAS, Mantegna made his feature film debut in 1985 in Frank Perry's Compromising Positions, based on Susan Isaacs' best seller. His early films include co-starring roles in The Money Pit; Weeds and Suspect. He also starred in the critically acclaimed David Mamet films House of Games and Things Change, for which he and co-star Don Ameche both received the coveted Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival. In 1991, Mantegna starred in the highly praised police thriller, Homicide; and
WHEREAS, His other films include Alice, Celebrity, the Godfather Ill, Liberty Heights, Bugsy, Searching for Bobby Fischer and Forget Paris. Other stand-out roles include Up Close and Personal, Baby's Day Out; Airheads, Queens Logic, Wait Until Spring, Bandinl Eye for an Eye, The Runner; and Thinner; and
WHEREAS, Mantegna had a starring role inthe CBS miniseries of Mario Puzo's best-selling novel The Last Don, which garnered him an Emmy Award nomination. He also enjoys appearing regularly as the voice of Fat Tony on The Simpsons. Mantegna's original feature films for cable include starring roles in State of Emergency, A Call to Remember; My Little Assassin, The Water Engine, The Comrades of Summer; Persons Unknown, Boy Meets Girl, and The Rat Pack, for which he was nominated for both another Emmy and a Golden Globe Award. In later films like Hoods and Jerry and Tom, Mantegna both starred and served as Executive Producer; and
WHEREAS, for the past nine years Mantegna has participated in the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington DC, and has co-hosted the last four with co-host Gary Sinise; and
WHEREAS, WHEREAS, With a rich family history in the military Mantegna has always been a supporter of our men and women who serve. In 2005 he was appointed the Honorary Chairman for The Salute to Hospitalized Veterans and has often lent his time to charities that benefit our military, their families and the USO; and
WHEREAS, In 2007 he was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for Operation Iraqi Children. A charity formed by Gary Sinise to give school supplies to children in Iraq and Afghanistan delivered by US Military troops. When possible he visits wounded service men and women at the VA Hospital, taking the time to sit and talk with them and their families with hopes that he can briefly take their minds off the long road to recovery; and
Recyclable and made from recycled was1e. @ WHEREAS, Over his career Mantegna has helped raise millions of dollars for charities all over the world, including Autism, The Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, Pediatric Aids Research, The National Kidney Foundation, Easter Seals, Melanoma Research, The Tom Sullivan Blind Children's Charity and Breast Cancer Awareness to name a few:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council hereby congratulates Joe Mantegna on this well deserved honor of receiving his star on the World Famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
