Tapped Out - Events Overview and Analysis

Players such as myself have faithfully enjoyed The Simpsons Tapped Out (TSTO) for several years now. The developers have continued to expand the game and provide updates in response to player feedback. This has been evident in tools such as the IRS Building tap radius, the Introduction Unemployment Office Job Manager and the Cut & Paste feature, all of which are greatly appreciated by players and have extended the playability of TSTO for many of us who would have otherwise found the game too tedious to continue once their Springfields grew so large. More recently, reactive efforts by the designers were positively reflected in the 2017 Winter Event. As evident from the forums, many dedicated and heavily-invested players have grown tired with some of TSTO's stale mechanics and gameplay, as well as the proliferation of uninspired content, much of which has little to no place in Springfield, if even the world of "The Simpsons." This Problem player attitude is often displayed in the later stages of major Events as players begin to sense monotony due to a lack in changes throughout an Event, resulting in a feeling that one is merely grinding through the game to stock up on largely unwanted Items. Content-driven major Events geared toward "The Simpsons" version of Springfield with changes of pace and the addition of new Effects, Solution enabling a variety of looks to our Springfields, injecting a new degree of both familiarity and customization for players. The proposed Events, along with the gameplay changes, are steeped in canonical content rather than original content. With all the creative, and fantastical, additions to TSTO there has long been some neglect toward the many trying to recreate a version of Springfield as a a real- world town, one more like the show they love, i.e. Anytown, USA. The game encourages design creativity and the proposed Effects, features, gameplay and Items help enable players to create these Springfields--a robust, dynamic and seemingly livable town--adding new dimensions Reason and creativity to the game, drawing them closer to their own Springfields, therein increasing investment of emotion, time and money. I believe the lasting value of many of these additions and augmentations have been underestimated by the developers, perhaps because some of it may, at first, seem superficially mundane. Further, TSTO is in need of some gameplay changes and a fresh perspective to the game. The proposed Effects outlined in the Events help satisfy this need without sacrificing appreciated elements. Although it is clear that many players like myself would prefer crafting be abandoned in favor of in-game Money purchases, the Events are consistent with established TSTO format, including the use of three (3) Acts with a common identity. However, to ease the feeling of monotony at the root of player complaints regarding the length of such Events, I implemented slight shifts in each of the Acts without losing sight of the central theme of an Event. (This is identifiable in the frequent changing of tappable Characters.) New and returning Items are carefully selected to contribute to the themes with footnotes, i.e. origins. A basic storyline is provided but as my imagination lay more in the structural, analytical and logical than the creative realm I leave the details of the story, triggers, quests and dialog to more artistic minds. The content is designed to flow in a manner that fits the themes while drawing on the Springfield we all know. Although several Events are high in new Building façades, particularly for the holidays, as well as Costumes, largely as I believe they have been underutilized in the past, the total volume of content is fairly consistent with recent Events--see Appendix I. (By taking advantage of façades, there is more to draw upon without exhausting canon.) Further, keeping with TSTO's pattern, there is a mixture of some frequently requested Items, less desired Items and simply Events complementary Items. Tappables are strategically selected from Characters unlikely to enter TSTO as playable, entirely sourced from episodes-- primarily cameos--and would be quality additions as non-playable Characters (NPC) following the Events. (As has been done in the past, i.e. Santa's Little Helper, if so desired in the future, developers can always convert NPCs to playable Characters.) Effort was made to distribute Prizes evenly by type, i.e. one (1) of each of the following: a playable Character, Costume, NPC, Building and Decoration. Reference images and full sets of Jobs have been provided for the new playable Characters and Costumes, along with an image and Job for most new Buildings and several Decorations. Where appropriate, Jobs are based on actual occurrences in "The Simpsons." The first trilogy of major Events are proposed under the over-arching storyline I entitled "Three Cheers for Springfield"--"Springfield City," "The Night Cometh" and "Red, White & Blue Dawn"--wherein there is an emphasis on rebuilding Springfield as we have come to know it. The second trilogy is more lighthearted and features the seasonal changes, which I entitled simply "Changing of the Seasons"--"Summer Break," "Yesteryears" and "The Krampus Corruption." The six (6) Events are built to work in succession, constituting a hypothetical year, i.e. 2019--see Appendix II. Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter I: Springfield City

Concept Making Springfield more like Springfield: Civic and cultural investment, improvement and involvement Although clearly a town, Springfield has grown larger over the years, like a bustling city. Our own Springfields should have the opportunity to Basis & Purpose reflect this. Emphasis City-building New Effect(s) Item enhancements: Moving on-road Vehicles, use of sidewalks, placement of watercraft on River and optional size alteration of select Items Recognizing that something is a bit off in Springfield--a hangover from explosion perhaps--the Event triggers with players given Sanitation Commissioner Homer [8], who begins to take over and put Springfield into action, an effort to make things right, as he sees it. joins in with the announcement of his latest invention, the Debigulator, which permits players to 'right-size' Items by altering scale of certain classes and Items, should they choose, and enabling 'Debigulated' on-road Vehicles placed on Roads to move. Here, I entitled the Event "Springfield City," which begins with Act I: The Public Works, where Sanitation Workers [8] arrive and civic improvements are made. Story & Content Best intentions, however, only expose the town's underbelly as, in Act II: The Mean Streets of Springfield, Homer strikes a deals with as rival Mobsters [52], seeing recent investments as nothing more than criminal opportunity, have become empowered. Nonetheless, the town holds strong and sends them back into the shadows. With the seedy side of Springfield dispatched, the story concludes with the alternative to crime in Act III: A Noble Spirit Embiggens, where Homer is removed from his position with a triumph of higher culture and education, symbolized by the presence of Grad Students [65]. The Event is heavily loaded with Vehicles to help players take advantage of the new moving on-road Vehicle Effect. By use of the Debigulator, Characters and a limited class of Vehicles can, by player option, be down-sized to common Building scale. [31] Certain Items that are vastly undersized can be independently upsized. [32, 47] Additionally, certain Items, i.e. lamps, streetlights and signs, can now be placed on sidewalks and certain Vehicles, i.e. cars, trucks, vans, can be placed on Roads. When placed on Roads, subject on-road Vehicles--not Gameplay Mechanics decorative Vehicles like Perfect Beer Truck, Truckasaurus, Collector's Car, etc.--move like Street Cleaner, including the use of opaque windows, but stop at stop signs/lights, if placed on sidewalks. New Buses also stop at bus shelters/stops placed on sidewalks. Character animations that manifest Vehicles now operate on Roads rather than sidewalks. Items that can be placed in Ocean can now be placed on River.

A generic building trio similar to Painted Houses from "Destination Springfield" Event. These are multi-story Buildings intended to represent generic structures that could be easily placed in any chosen district, allowing for depth to city elements. 'Debigulated' Items reduced in two dimensions, an overall factor of four, though occupying the same footprint so as to not interrupt gameplay. This feature would be a toggle switch at the Debigulator, permitting players to revert back to original ratio if/when preferred. New Character (and related Item) size can be compared to Patio, Bistro, etc., while new Vehicle size can be compared to Parking Stalls, Scrap City, etc. Affected Vehicles would operate by the same mechanics as Street Cleaner, which would remain immune to the Debigulator. Essentially, this would bring Characters and Buildings to the same basic scale. For purposes of game mechanics, this would need to be a single option activating all subject Items from the Debigulator, not independent Item actions, as would be the case for Embigulator. This would likely require a reload. Airplanes and Helicopters would not be affected as they are already reasonably close to Building scale.

14 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter I: Springfield City

32. Embigulated Items, smaller in number, would be selected individually from the subject Item itself, not the Debigulator. The Item would immediately quadruple in size, i.e. a 10x10 item would be 20x20, but it would not be placeable unless there was available Land. Compare individual pine Trees to those native to large natural features, i.e. Springfield Dam, Wildlife Sanctuary, Springfield Natural Park, etc. The relatively few Embigulated Items would benefit from updated façades that account for the varying sizes of features on Items; some additional programming would need to be completed to 'right size' Character interactions per the choice Character and Item size, i.e. Homer Figts Bigclaw at Springfield Wildlife Sanctuary. Some Items would require altered façades for appropriate ratios. Overall, these changes enable players to select the best fits for their custom vision of Springfield and encourages the purchase of Land, both which serve to lengthen the playability of the game. It also has the benefit of decreasing Item to Land ratios, which should help players with the maximum Item limit. 33. Compare to First Church of Springfield and Sprawlmart. Since so may players have hidden Training Walls behind buildings, this is coded to use the Training Wall nearest Springfield Police Academy. 76. From "A Tale of Two Springfields" 77. From "Today I Am a Clown" 78. Compare to Springfield General. In addition to downsizing, this Item should be provided a new façade, including the 'left-facing' version, losing its entrance overhang so it can be placed directly behind the Hospital's side entrance. (Generally, players have noticed the lack of canonical images by use of this 'mirroring' method. I understand it makes things easier for programmers but it is recognized as lazy by players. I strongly recommend going back to providing both sides for new Items. Players appreciate this attention to detail.)

16 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter I: Springfield City

79. Escalator to Nowhere should tower over Springfield and is not a simple fix. Compare to Popsicle Stick Skyscraper. (Excluding Heavenly Swing Set, which is unique in that it rests in the clouds, the only Item that should be taller may be an Embigulated Murderhorn.) Granted, proper sizing of this would require more than a simple x4 multiple. The width is already adequate but the height and length should be doubled. Additionally, the included NPCs would need to be altered per any use of the Debigulator.

17 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter I: Springfield City

80) Example: Springfield Coliseum

18 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter I: Springfield City

81) Example: Duff Stadium. Compare native entrances and turnstiles to Characters and Building doors, native field to Football Field. An Embigulated Duff Stadium would need smaller entrances than a simple doubling of Item size.

20 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter II: The Night Cometh

Concept Bringing back the prominence of Springfield Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) SNPP plays an outsized role in the Simpsons universe, ever-present and looming over Springfield. Even The Simpsons Tapped Out (TSTO) Basis & Purpose storyline is founded in Homer's mishap at the plant. This Event is designed to expand upon SNPP's influence in the game, add to its presence and make it more respected and well-recognized within both TSTO and players' Springfields. Emphasis SNPP New Effect(s) Nighttime Mr. Burns, unhappy with the rise in civic pride, begins to feel his influence waning and seeks to reassert his power by effectively implementing an old plan of his--blocking out the perepetual sunlight. Players place new Item, Sun Blocker Mountain, and tap it, animating a massive blocker that rises up out of the mountain and out of view, beginning new 'Nighttime' Effect. Here, I entitled the Event "The Night Cometh" and divided it into Act I: Into the Dark, wherein Protestors [2] gather and Mr. Burns is shot, followed by an investigation in Act II: Let There Be Light, where, Story & Content aided by Reporters [21], the mystery is solved and sunlight returns, and finally Act III: Return to Power (Plant), where Mr. Burns returns to his beloved SNPP only to encounter a waste incident that requires a visit from Nuclear Inspectors [2, 20]. With SNPP tainted, various forms of energy are embraced by Springfielders. Content is drawn largely from SNPP-focused episodes and scenes, as well as Items that are befitting the night. Alternate color scheme is created to make the nighttime Effect work. (Simply selecting 'negatives' for each color should permit for this without excessive programming; although, Characters, as in the show, are to remain immune to the effect.) Lighting is also emphasized. Once the story Gameplay Mechanics is complete, players can activate 'Nighttime' by tapping Sun Blocker Mountain. Likewise, tapping Sun Blocker Mountain while in 'Nighttime' animates the blocker's descent back into the mountain for standard 'Day' mode. (It is understood that a reload would be required when switching modes.)

31 Three Cheers for Springfield, Chapter III: Red, White and Blue Dawn

Concept Standing up for Springfield Players spend countless hours building their Springfields. This results in an emotional investment in the game, a pride in their own Springfield. Silly as their town may be, it is nobody's place to say how it should look, certainly not who should control it. This Event puts players in defense Basis & Purpose of their personal towns while importing elements of Springfield's rich military heritage. (It runs concurrent to the annual Fourth of July mini- Event.) Emphasis Town pride, unity and defense New Effect(s) Rain and Dome Following the nuclear waste incident, the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) emissions begin causing unceasing acid rain. (If not already owned, players place Weather Station.) Enough being enough, the feds determine that Springfield is unable to operate in the best interest of its citizens, that control must be assumed in this Event entitled "Red, White & Blue Dawn." Players are given and Green Beret Skinner [19] while ground troops, Army Soldiers [7], are sent into Springfield in Act I: By Land, followed by maritime troops, Navy Sailors [3, 42], in Act II: By Sea, Story & Content and air troops, Air Force Fighter Pilots [2], in Act III: By Air. As the final wave proves a failure, Russ Cargill speaks out and determines that Springfield needs to be cut-off from the rest of the country, placing it under a Dome, even if that includes himself. The town rallies and players are given Deep Dome Drill, if not already owned. Use of the drill shatters the Dome, retaining citizens' control of Springfield. Upon completion of the story, players who completed all three chapters of "Three Cheers for Springfield" are awarded with Springfield City [40] and State [27] Flags (combined on single pole, topped by US flag). [46] Rain Effect includes pooling of water in Road gutters and darkening of Dirt Roads. While Springfield is under the Dome, there is a shimmering Effect as the Dome encircles all Land owned and available for purchase, including Ocean, and aerial Jobs, i.e. Arnie Pye's "Do a Sky Harness Gameplay Mechanics Review," are disabled. Once the story is complete, the Rain Effect can be toggled on/off using Weather Station and the Dome Effect can be toggled on/off using Deep Dome Drill. (It is understood that a reload would be required for this, and that the two Effects would be mutually exclusive, as would be the snow during Winter Events.)

42 Changing of the Seasons, Chapter I: Summer Break

Concept It's summer in Springfield. That means it's time to head outside. Letting summer and all its glory enter our little game. Events that are too tightly wound and hold too close to a simple premise can become a Basis & Purpose stretch, leading to the incorporation of unrelated content and monotonous gameplay, leaving players tired and waiting for the end. This Event broadens the theme to retain interest without losing sight of its basic concept--going outdoors. Emphasis Summer Fun New Effect(s) None. (This is a summer break.) With the gravity of recent Events having passed, Springfielders need some time to relax with a return to normalcy, if such a thing can be said. School is out, people are vacationing; nothing says break like summer and the outdoors. Less serious and involved than recent Events, Springfielders simply celebrate with leisure in this Event entitled "Summer Break," which begins by giving players Bigfoot Homer [16] and Scout Story & Content Leader Ned [13] for Act I: Into the Wild, where all things nature and camping occur and Scouts [13, 17, 42] proliferate. Having explored the outdoors and nature, this is followed by Act II: Carnival Time, where Springfielders turn to gather and have some good old fashioned fun with games and Carnies [7]. But fun with games need not be restricted to the carnival type as, with Act III: The Boys of Summer, folks turn to more active sports in a tribute to the town's baseball tradition and its Springfield Isotopes [1, 2, 41]. Gameplay Mechanics Strip of Ocean added

Concept Breaking the barriers of space, time and reality. Players have complained that the Treehouse of Horor (THOH) Events have lost their Halloween edge. Lost in that thought, I believe, is the fact that the show's THOH episodes do not hold strictly to 'ghosts and goblins.' Rather, they explore absurdities. This Event is tied to the unexplained, the paranormal, but allows players to customize their Springfield's look, tailoring it to how they view the season--zombies, ghosts, Basis & Purpose or simply sending kids to trick-or-treat--without repurposing a prior theme for the duration of a new Event. Players are empowered to decide for themselves what Halloween is whilst provided a novel spin on the annual Event as Springfield experiences a time warp with the seemingly unlivable coming to life. Emphasis The 90s New Effect(s) Classic color scheme Working from home, Professor Frink's extra-curricular project to understand the God Particle accidentally opens a transdimensional parallel nexus. Players place new Item, Tear in Space-Time. In this THOH Event entitled "Yesteryears," the bounds of time and reality are broken, resulting in an ushering in of Characters and creatures that have no right being in Springfield--certainly not today--consisting of the return of long-lost faces [4] and Characters' Classic looks [1], which include animated Event Jobs, as well as Classic façades for select Buildings [35]. This begins with a primer in Act I: Children of the Torn, where Forgotten Kids [36, 57, 60] appear and FBI Agents Mulder & Scully [2] arrive to investigate the potential repercussions of the anomoly. Warnings about the negative ramifications of this break with reality, however, go Story & Content unheeded as Springfielders embrace living in their past, as if that is nothing out of the ordinary. It is, after all, Halloween time, and we have grown accustomed to the unusual in Springfield...and who doesn't love the 90s? (Returning spooky content is frontloaded in Act I to permit players to maximize holiday decor and ambiance for the duration of the Event, which becomes increasingly more Halloween-oriented as the holiday approaches.) Put off by the citizens' lack of concern and cooperation, the agents begrudingly leave [31], but as Act II: Theatre of the Absurd begins, fears are validated when the inanimate, Giant Mascots [3], come to life. Despite their defeat, fear is only amplified when, in Act III: Old Tales Reborn, the stories of old become new and real as Movie Monsters [30] exit the imagination and vault into Springfield. An update to the Ghost Zapper [28] now allows for 'haunted' Character Jobs while Nightmare Pile [5] permits players to send all available kids trick-or-treating ("Wear a Costume"). These Items now act similarily to Zombie Sandwich. Though still showing the Autumn leaves and spooky borders, slightly under/over-saturated tones are applied to give Springfield a look reminiscent of early episodes of "The Simpsons." After the Gameplay Mechanics Event, Tear in Space-Time permits players to send Classic Characters on Jobs from the Event--also like Zombie Sandwich--to toggle on/off all Classic façades owned--similar to Festive Holiday Plunger--and to toggle on/off Classic color scheme Effect. (It is understood that a reload would be required to change color schemes.)

Footnotes:

1. Classic Costumes are used similar to past Events use of Zombies and Ghosts. Here, the Classic look reflects their early appearances and they are assigned 4-hour animated Jobs for the Event. (A similar mechanic for Jobs is employed with Springfield City Dump and Recycling Centers.) Any owned Characters, for which there is a Classic Costume, have access to these Jobs. After the Event, the animated Jobs are made available by use of Tear in Space-Time, similar to Zombie Sandwich. Classic Costumes are not affected by change to/from Classic color scheme. 2. From "The Springfield Files" 3. From "Treehouse of Horror VI." Lard Lad, Giant Peanut and Red Devil Real Estate mascots used as Tappables. 4. Because of EA's reluctance (or refusal) to include 's Characters in TSTO, I did not list them as playable Characters in Act I, which would be my preference. The best way to remember and express appreciation of any well-regarded departed is to acknowledge, not ignore them. That is why monuments exist. Alternatively, a lead-up mini-Event that focuses on his contributions would be most appreciated by players. 5. Updated to allow multiple Characters to trick-or-treat, similar to Zombie Sandwich. 6. 72 Changing of the Seasons, Chapter III: Winter - The Krampus Corruption

Concept Santa vs. Krampus As it is celebrated on "The Simpsons" every year, players have come to expect the annual Winter Event to look like Christmas. What that means Basis & Purpose may be a matter of debate but this Event is designed to focus on the various aspects of the Holidays while granting players every opportunity to dress up their Springfields for the season. Emphasis The Holiday Spirit New Effect(s) None. (It already snows in our Springfields.) Snow is falling, which means the Holidays are here, but not if Krampus has anything to say about it. Santa's arch-enemy enters Springfield trying to eat away at the Christmas spirit and prove ol' St. Nick wrong by showing Springfielders that things aren't so merry for everybody. No longer hidden from plain sight, Hobos [54] begin to appear. To fend off the fiendish Krampus, a villain who would use the less fortunate to his advantage, Santa comes into the fray in Act I: Holiday Jeer as Krampus attacks the commercial aspect of X-Mas, yet the Holiday spirit abounds as Springfielders provide Hobos [54] with a place to stay and a warm meal at the Rescue Mission [54]. (Returning Christmas content, which includes all previous Christmas façades, is frontloaded in Act I to permit players to maximize holiday decor and ambiance for the duration of the Story & Content Event; although much of it is released as an Event lead-in.) In Act II: Holiday Cheer, the mood changes as the story focuses more on the Christmas side [9] as the foundation to the season and the 'true' meaning of the Holiday spirit, concluding with the defeat of Krampus, who sees the errors of his ways with newfound value in the Holidays. The conflict is behind us and the New Year is in sight as Act III: Fun in the Snow begins and Springfielders enjoy some traditional winter fun, but not Homer [6], who is bent on warning of the coming end. Having been numbed by such calls before, with a lonely voice in the wilderness this time, Homer's words fall on deaf ears as the year turns without incident. (Although Tappables do not change theme in this Event, two more Hobos [14, 15, 16, 17, 54] arrive with each new Act.) Gameplay Mechanics N/A
