PASTOR’S LETTER Good People of Holy Cross,
Our Advent journey begins: “Therefore, keep awake – for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn.” God willing, the journey we begin today toward Bethlehem’s stable will end with angels glorious singing. So if Advent calls us to prepare for our Lord’s second coming what exactly are we to do, to believe, to expect, to celebrate if none of us is capable of knowing when our Lord will return? Advent invites us to celebrate the great affirmation that God’s good gift to us is measured with every breath we take and every embrace we experience and every gesture of friendship and every expression of love. Our task these next few weeks has little to do with trying to predict when our Lord will return and everything to do with affirming that our Lord will return. The invitation to prepare, to get ready, to wait on tiptoes and look with wide-eyed wonder wrap the gift of our Lord’s return in ribbons of wonder. Advent really has nothing to do with Christmas decorations. As much as I love the sights and sounds and smells of this blessed season, as much as all of us delight in the music that makes Advent and Christmas so very special, there is no reason to light a candle or decorate a tree if the person of Jesus Christ is not honored for who he is and what he calls us to be. Not a one of us knows when our Lord will return. And aren’t you glad we don’t? Right now, there is so much we do know that simply needs to come alive in what we believe and how we treat others and what we will do with the extravagant resources God has placed in our hands. Nuestro viaje de Adviento comienza: "Por lo tanto, manténganse despiertos, porque no saben cuándo vendrá el dueño de la casa, al anochecer, a la medianoche, al canto del gallo o al amanecer". Si Dios quiere, el viaje que comenzamos hoy hacia el establo de Belén terminará con el glorioso canto de los ángeles. Entonces, si el Adviento nos llama a prepararnos para la segunda venida de nuestro Señor, ¿qué debemos hacer exactamente, para creer, para esperar, para celebrar si ninguno de nosotros es capaz de saber cuándo regresará nuestro Señor? El Adviento nos invita a celebrar la gran afirmación de que el buen regalo de Dios para nosotros se mide con cada aliento que tomamos, con cada abrazo que experimentamos, con cada gesto de amistad y cada expresión de amor. Nuestra tarea estas próximas semanas tiene poco que ver con tratar de predecir cuándo regresará nuestro Señor y todo con afirmar que nuestro Señor regresará. La invitación a prepararse, a estar listos, esperar de puntillas y mirar con gran asombro el regalo del regreso de nuestro Señor. El Adviento realmente no tiene nada que ver con las decoraciones navideñas. Por mucho que me gusten las imagenes, los sonidos y los olores de esta temporada bendita, por mucho que todos nos deleitemos con la música que hace que el Adviento y la Navidad sean tan especiales, no hay razón para encender una vela o decorar un árbol si la persona de Jesucristo no es honrado por quien es y por lo que nos llama a ser. Ninguno de nosotros sabe cuándo regresará nuestro Señor. ¿Y no te alegra que no sepamos? En este momento, hay tantas cosas que sabemos que simplemente deben cobrar vida en lo que creemos, en cómo tratamos a los demás y en lo que haremos con los recursos extravagantes que Dios ha puesto en nuestras manos. ¡Que tengas una bendita temporada de Adviento! CHURCH NEWS Good People of Holy Cross, Peace and good! I continue offering thanks for my healing of Covid-19 and all your cards, prayers, and good wishes. Thanks to all who are also faithfully supporting our parish with your weekly offerings. With numbers on the rise, we all need to stay focused, healthy, and safe. Many people are finding our electronic giving to be super easy and convenient; it helps all around as we stay in the black and our money counters (bless their good hearts) do not have that to count. Please consider it. We are planning for some services knowing full well that things can change in a heartbeat. The Blood Drive is scheduled for December 5th and you will need to register for a time. Advent will find us asking one person to come up and light the appropriate candles at the beginning of mass. You will also notice meditative piano music 15 minutes before each mass to call us to reflection and prayer and quiet. The Holy Day of Obligation for the Immaculate Conception will have vigil Masses at 6 PM in English and 7:30 PM in Spanish. On the 8th, the masses will be at 9:15 AM, 12:10 PM, and 6 PM. The Guadalupe festivities will include a novena, starting on December 2nd, 2 vigil masses on 12/11; one at 7 PM and the other at 10 PM that you will need to register for seats. On the feast day of December 12th, there will be a mass at 6:30 PM. We regret that our “fiesta” will not include food as this will attract people to gather and we need not become a “super spreader” event here at HC. Our Advent penance service will be different this year as we cannot have a communal celebration. The friars plan to offer more times for you to celebrate this beautiful sacrament and details will soon follow. Also, +Archbishop Hartmayer has granted permission to celebrate Christmas eve masses earlier than 4 PM. We intend to have 2 masses at 2 PM, 2 masses at 4 PM, 2 masses at 6 PM, 8 PM will be in Spanish and 10 PM will be our last Christmas eve mass. Last, but not least, our Advent Christmas Giving. Your generosity shows up in a mountain of gifts for needy children. After much prayer and consultation, this year we are asking that you purchase a gift card, in increments of $25 or less, to a place that has toys, clothing, and groceries; we also will accept cash. We ask you to put your gift(s) in an envelope clearly marked Advent Giving and you can drop them in the collection basket, send them in the mail, or electronically on our Online Giving. Additional details to follow. To be clear, there will be no tree to pick a “want” nor will there be any gifts accepted to keep everyone safe. Something you do not know about me…. FAITH FORMATION Holy Cross Catholic Church & Department of Faith Formation Celebrates National Black Catholic History Month November 2020 Honoring the African Ancestry religious and laity on the path to sainthood
VENERABLE MOTHER HENRIETTE DELILLE
Mother Henriette Delille is the first United States native born African American whose cause for canonization was officially opened by the Catholic Church in 1988. She was born in New Orleans, LA on March 11, 1813, a free woman of color. Her mother was a free woman of color and her father a Frenchman. Henriette was raised Roman Catholic and was devoted to the Church. At the age of 14, the well-educated Henriette began teaching at the local Catholic VENERABLE School. Over the next several years she devoted her life to teaching and caring for Mother Henriette Delille the poor. (1813-1862) By 1836, she had inspired a small band of women to assist the sick and dying and to catechize the uninstructed among her people. By 1841 this group of pious women was both encouraged and recognized by the church. In 1842 the Sisters of the Holy Family received official recognition by the Catholic Church. By 1851 Henriette had personally purchased a home where these women could live in community and further their ministry. At her death in 1862, Henriette Delille was known as one “who for the love of Jesus Christ had made herself the humble servant of slaves.” This simple prayer guided her life: “I believe in God. I hope in God. I love. I want to live and die for God.”

VENERABLE MADRE HENRIETTE DELILLE

HOLY SACRAMENTS/SAGRADOS SACRAMENTOS BAPTISM REQUIREMENTS Parents must be active, practicing, registered members of Holy Cross Parish for at least 3 months and are required to complete a Baptism Preparation Class. Sponsors must be at least 16 years of age. At least one of the Godparents must be an active, registered, practicing Catholic of their parish and submit a certificate of eligibility.
FIRST COMMUNION REQUIREMENTS A child must be at least 7 years of age and a registered member of this parish, be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the sacraments, and have been in the Faith Formation Program for at least one year prior to taking the First Holy Communion program. A copy of the Baptism Certificate must be presented upon registration.
CONFIRMATION REQUIREMENTS In order to be Confirmed, a youth must be baptized and a practicing Catholic, a registered member of this parish, at least 15 years old or a sophomore in high school, and have been in Faith Formation Program for at least 2 years immediately prior to the Confirmation program. A copy of the candidate’s Baptism and First Communion Certificates must be presented upon registration.
MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS At least one of the couple must be a practicing Catholic and registered in this parish (or have a letter of permission from their current pastor authorizing them to marry outside of that parish); they must make an appointment with a priest of this parish, and indicate their desire to be married here at least 6 months prior to the projected date of marriage, and have completed the required Marriage Preparation program. No arrangements for a reception should be made until the date for the projected marriage has been authorized by the priest of this Church. A copy of the candidate/candidates’ Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation Certificates must be presented upon registration.
