A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre

After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van.

However, he was captured only two blocks away when the van ran out of gas.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied,

“Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings”

“ I had no Monet”

“To buy Degas”

“To make the Van Gogh”

Now, see if you have De Gaulle to share this with someone else.

We shared it with you because we figured we had nothing Tolouse!

Here’s an easy at-home COVID test:

Every day at 5pm, open a bottle of wine, smell it, then pour some in a glass. If you can smell it and taste it, you are healthy. Celebrate by finishing the bottle!

In light of the public health emergency surrounding the COVID 19 outbreak, let us continue to pray to St. the Archangel: Because you are the “medicine of God” we humbly pray to you to calm our fears and anxieties, and to grant healing to those suffering from the Corona virus; offer your protection and strength to those in the medical professions offering care to those so afflicted. May we trust in the Lord, who is our Shepherd, as we walk through this valley of “fear and death”, in this time of darkness. May we be anointed in the Spirit’s love and ask that you always direct us in the way of peace, health and salvation. Amen.

PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you have already come and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Mask It or Casket! A reminder about the importance of wearing a mask in church. Please be advised that in accordance with CDC guidelines and our previously announced requirement that all who choose to attend Mass at St. James MUST wear either a mask or other face covering that covers the mouth and nose is mandatory and no exceptions will be made.

Anyone observed not wearing a mask/face covering will be asked by an usher to either don a mask or immediately leave the church. Should that individual refuse to comply with the usher’s request, the ushers have been directed to interrupt the presider, who will publicly address the situation with the offender.

The wearing of face coverings has been shown to reduce transmission of droplets that may carry the corona virus or other illnesses. As such, wearing it is a simple and effective sign of courtesy and respect towards others in our midst.

Your cooperation is vital in order for us to publicly celebrate Mass.

Venerable Henriette Delille another in our occasional series on African American candidates for sainthood in the .

Henriette Delille was born in 1812, a free woman of color, and lived her life in . Although never married, it is assumed from funeral records that Henriette may have given birth to two sons who died before the age of three.

When Henriette was 24 years old, she underwent a religious experience. This religious experience is expressed in her brief declaration: “I believe in God, I hope in God, I love, I want to live and die for God”.

In 1836 Henriette drew up the “rules and regulations for devout Christian women,” which would eventually become the Society of the Holy Family. In 1842, assisted by two friends, she founded the Sisters of the Holy Family.

They expressed their apostolic intentions through caring for the sick, helping the poor, and instructing their people, free and enslaved, in the name of Jesus Christ and the Church. They served as godmothers, and marriage witnesses to slaves, free, children, and adults. Taking into their home elderly women who needed more than visits, they opened America's first Catholic home for the elderly. Noteworthy are the heroic efforts of the early Sisters who cared for the sick and the dying during the yellow fever epidemics that struck New Orleans in 1853 and 1897.

Henriette Delille died in 1862. The last line of her obituary reads, “for the love of Jesus Christ she had become the humble and devout servant of the slaves.” The first native born African American whose cause for has been officially opened, she was declared “Venerable” by Pope Benedict XVI March 27, 2010.

Why Immigrate? Part 2

Human immigration from one region—or even continent—to another goes back to the earliest days of human history. Today the displacement of peoples is increasing exponentially world wide due to multiple causes: war, religious and political persecution, hunger and climate change.

The Israelites left the Holy Land for Egypt because of drought and famine. Then they left to escape slavery and worship their God freely. Later Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to save their child, our Lord, from violence against young Jewish male infants. The following two videos offer scenes and stories of dislocation today. The first video (2 minutes). is produced by Catholic Relief Services. It gives an overview of the numbers of people throughout the world today who are undergoing forced displacement. It calls on Christians to lead the way in helping the refugee and the stranger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjdqjNMri2Y&list=PLt5PsPjJAk2kTw_pItvrOlE8ohpNhAR5&index=2 The second video (5 minutes) , is produced by PBS. It focuses on climate change as a growing reason why so many people are leaving their lands and traditional livelihoods today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xuZT7VkjVg

DONATING TO ST. JAMES DURING THE COVID 19 HEALTH EMERGENCY During this time of uncertainty surrounding the COVID19 virus, many of us will choose to remain at home and not venture out to church or other places where large groups of people may gather. While respecting that choice, please remember that our parish still needs our financial support in order to meet regular operating expenses such as electric bills, heating/cooling, water and payroll.

If you have not already signed up for electronic giving via Faith Direct, please consider doing so now. It’s easy to do and only takes a few minutes; if you require assistance, a representative from Faith Direct will be happy to help you. Join the many parishioners who already enjoy the convenience of not having to write checks for their weekly offertory. Thanks to e-giving, it’s already taken care of which saves them time, while saving the parish money by eliminating unused offertory envelopes.

Faith Direct also offers personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket once we are able to gather again in person. If you’ve not yet enrolled, simply visit: faith. direct/NY997 to securely enroll on line. For assistance, feel free to call Faith Direct customer service at: 1-866-507-8757

If you prefer to not use technology, please continue to mail your donations to the rectory office.

Thank you for your continued support of St. James.

Do Children Have First Amendment Rights in Public School? Part 1

Soon children in grades K-12 will return to school either in-person or remotely, and the misunder- standing about prayer in public schools will return also. Is it legal for your child to pray in public school?

Yes! The Supreme Court never outlawed student prayer in public schools. Multiple court decisions and Dept. of Education regulations confirm that students are free to pray alone or in groups, as long as such prayers are not disruptive and take place during non-instructional time. During those times, students may also read their Bible or other scriptures, say grace before meals, study religious materials with fellow students and meet in after school religious based clubs.

So - why and how did this exercise of First Amendment Freedom of Religion become controversial? Before the 1960s there was little resistance to teaching religious principles, Bible readings, or prayer in school - in fact, it was the norm. The landmark case, Engel v. Vitale, brought before the Supreme Court in 1962, asserted that any state mandated prayer offended the Constitution’s prohibition against an establishment of religion and violated “separation of church and state.” The majority opinion resulted in an end to the practice of students voluntarily reciting a school-composed, non-denominational prayer such as: "Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country. Amen." (1)

However, invoking the phrase "separation of church and state" to silence religious expression is to perpetuate the lie that this phrase is in the Constitution - it is not! In fact, it is derived from President Thomas Jefferson’s letter in 1802 to the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut to reassure them that their religious freedoms were safe from government interference and protected by the First Amendment.

To clarify students' rights, in 1995, President Bill Clinton said, "The First Amendment does not require students to leave their religion at the schoolhouse door." (2) He then instructed the Dept. of Education to write guidelines for religious expression in school.

On Jan.10, 2020, President Trump issued updated guidelines for religious expression in public schools and added a reporting mechanism for students experiencing denial of their religious expression. (3)

George Carlin on Life…. A timely reflection

On rare occasions one comes across amazing insights disguised as common observations about ordinary things. Words can inspire, words can create images, which become profound and compelling reasons to engage, to act, to align oneself with a better, more rewarding life. George Carlin, author, thinker, and comic, had just that kind of impact on me, reflecting on life, just before he died. Here’s what he wrote:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things. We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relation- ships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete. Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent. Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL One explanation of the symbolism of the Jerusalem Cross that graces our new entrance is that the large cross symbolizes Jesus and the 4 smaller crosses symbolize the 4 corners of the earth. Your donation to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal allows our Diocese to touch the lives of many in the 4 corners of Long Island. Please help us become “One Family in Mission” as we build up the Body of Christ in the 4 corners of Long Island. Donate at www.StJamesSetauket.org
